Moving usually begins with getting a quote. This is the point at which you begin to look for the right movers for your relocation and you start comparing prices for services. Once you request it there are three types of estimates that you can get from the moving company: binding, non-binding and binding not-to-exceed. You should be aware of the types of quotes so you can request one of the types you find preferable for your relocation. Almost always people get one estimate over the phone or on internet and in reality it changes. Many are the reasons for it – sometimes people don’t know all the factors that contribute to the formation of the price for their moving and they skip to tell important details to the mover, sometimes people forget to mention things they have for moving and thus the final price is almost always higher than the one first suggested over the phone or on the internet.
Moving Estimate – Types and Their Essence
The final cost for your relocation should be given to you only after an in home visual moving estimate. Knowing the 3 moving estimates types can protect you from the rise in your relocation costs later on and will give you more control over the conditions of your relocation. Sometimes people forget to think about this when moving but it is important. Include the question of the types of moving quotes in your moving checklist. Prepare what you are going to move with you and you can get rid of the things you don’t need by organizing a moving sale or making a donation to the salvation army and you are ready to go. So, here are the descriptions of the three types of moving quotes:

There are three types of moving quotes: binding, non-binding and binding not-to-exceed. Each one differs in some aspects so acquaint yourself with them before signing anything.
Moving Estimates – non-binding
The first of the types of moving quotes that you may get from a mover is the non-binding estimate. As the name suggests, when the moving company gives you estimations for your moving this amount is only rough. You will understand exactly how much your moving will cost you on moving day. The price can be lower than the initially predicted or higher in which case it would be good if you have foreseen unexpected spendings and planned some extra money which you can use to cover them.
Moving Estimates – binding
Unlike the non-binding, the binding estimate gives you a fixed amount you have to pay for moving. There is still a chance that your actual expenses will be higher but if this is the case you don’t pay more than the agreed sum. Also if the final moving costs are lower than the one in the estimate you still pay the agreed amount. In other words, whether the binding moving estimates by weight are calculated precisely or not your expenses remain the same.
Moving Estimates – binding not-to-exceed
The binding not-to-exceed estimate is binding because the amount in it cannot be changed to a higher amount. What is an advantage of it is that if your final costs for moving are higher than the ones stated in the quote you still pay the same amount of money that is in it. On the other hand, if the bill for moving is smaller than the estimations made first, you get to pay the lower amount.
Moving estimates – binding vs nnon-binding

After getting to know the types of quotes, find a trustworthy mover that can provide you with the type of moving estimate you prefer to have.
Before requesting a particular type of a moving estimate compare the benefits of the binding, non-binding and the binding not-to-exceed estimate and take a decision. After you review them find movers in your state and discuss with them which types of estimates they provide. Asking for moving estimates online is not enough though. You need to get an in home visual moving estimate. This means that a mover should come to your home and you should show this person all you have for moving. It will make the calculations of the moving experts more accurate than on the phone or online only. This is important especially when you have a long distance moving to make. In a case where you have a small move like a couple of pieces of furniture only perhaps a phone estimation will be accurate and will be enough but such relocations are more an exception than a rule.
In order to calculate your potential moving expenses you can take a look at the household moving calculator or think about how you can find a trustworthy mover to rely on with your belongings. A reliable mover will guarantee you that the price they give you is not going to change for reasons other than objective ones. These little details can make your moving easier. I love this breakdown. Ultimately, every moving company should have some sort of customization because jobs can fall into several different categories.
I really like the way you guys categories the estimates. Each one makes sense for different moves.
This is a great breakdown of how by the piece or weight pricing works. The best option for the consumer is a guaranteed not to exceed which means if it is more you pay the quoted price but if less you pay less. Win Win for the consumer.
The only way to get a close to accurate estimate for your move is having an onsight inspection by your movers.
Doing this you can compell your movers to provide you with a Binding – Not to Exceed Estimate/Cost for your move. Definitly BEWARE of “low-ball” estimates….. those very low estimates which are out of line with the estimates of other companies.
Important to remember that that “contract” is based on exactly what your movers have seen and been informed by the client of what all is involved in your move. Contract wil be void if you begin to add additional items and tasks to your move on the actual day od your move.
Great, easy-to follow article breaking down the types of estimates available. Nicely done!
