Moving is never easy, and selecting a new home and evaluating potential cities can be a challenging, complex process. In this case, Dallas and Houston — two cities celebrated for their unique Texan allure — are no exception. Both cities are recognized America-wide for their distinctive appeal and offer prospects of a rich lifestyle replete with a blend of traditional Southern charm and modern urban amenities.

If you’re caught in the captivating dance between Houston and Dallas as your next home, you’re not alone. The good news? We’re here to make choosing a bit easier. In this article, we’ll examine critical factors, such as cost of living, job opportunities and commuting experiences, that significantly influence the residential experience.

Schools in Houston/Dallas

Relocating comes with considerations beyond economic opportunities and lifestyle, and for those with children, education is a priority. Luckily, Houston and Dallas have reputable schools and robust education systems. The average high school graduation rate in Texas is 90%, and both Houston and Dallas have schools that reflect this strong commitment to education.

Want to dive a bit deeper? Learn more about Houston Schools and Dallas Schools.

Houston Schools

When it comes to educational prowess, Houston holds a respectable position, ranking 88th according to a WalletHub’s study. Despite having an 85.2% graduation rate, which is slightly below the state average, the city offers distinguished schools that enrich its academic profile:

  • River Oaks Elementary School

  • DeBakey High School for Health Professions

  • Carnegie Vanguard High School

  • Eastwood Academy

With over 40 colleges and universities in the area, students also have plenty of choices for higher education. You’re sure to find the right school for your child’s interests and goals if you move here.

Dallas Schools

With a 2022 graduation rate of 80.1%, the city takes pride in the many opportunities it offers its students. The Dallas ISD, for example, has made great strides in recent years, showcasing its dedication to providing a top-notch education. The U.S. News & World Report 2022 national rankings validate this commitment, with 38 of Dallas ISD’s high schools earning recognition and 11 ranking in the top 100 across Texas.

Although the city’s educational performance is pretty solid, it’s the individual schools that really elevate Dallas’s educational standing:

  • School for the Talented and Gifted (No. 1 in Texas, No. 8 nationally)

  • Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet

  • Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School

  • Westlake Academy

Dallas also has numerous colleges and universities catering to diverse student interests, making it a hub of learning and growth.

Transportation in Dallas vs. Houston

Navigating the transportation scene of two buzzing Texas cities, Dallas and Houston reveal a comparative snapshot of daily commute experiences.

  • Traffic: Both face rush-hour peaks, with Houston slightly busier. Average commute times are nearly the same, with Dallas at 25.7 minutes and Houston at around 26.1 minutes.

  • Public Transportation:

In general, public transit in either city is relatively under-utilized. Car-centric transportation rules the day. If you’re living in downtown Houston or downtown Dallas, you may be able to make it without a car.

  • Airports:

    • Dallas: Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International and Love Field for domestic flights.

    • Houston: George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby Airport, both servicing international and domestic routes.

  • Bike/Pedestrian-Friendly: Both cities promote biking and walking through networks of trails, although car-centric areas are still prevalent.

In essence, Dallas and Houston offer similar transportation conveniences, with slight differences catering to various lifestyle needs.

Jobs/Economy in Dallas vs. Houston

With an unemployment rate of 3.8% and a respectable average annual income of $77,029, Dallas offers a promising playground for tech, finance and healthcare professionals, in Dallas as well as nearby Forth Worth and Arlington. Icons like AT&T and JP Morgan Chase call this city home.

Switch sides to Houston’s economy, which is known as the “Energy Capital” and is home to NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Unemployment stands at 4.5%, but the annual average income climbs to a solid $94,895, reflecting its high-earning energy sector.

Simply put, whether you’re tech-mad or energy-driven, Dallas and Houston’s job markets have you covered.

Entertainment in Dallas vs. Houston

Dallas and Houston are epicenters of diverse entertainment and tranquility, never failing to leave an impression. From the dynamic Uptown district in Dallas to the effervescent nightlife of Midtown Houston, both cities offer energetic moments for your social calendar.

Dallas charms with the vibrant music scene at House of Blues and culinary stops within the Bishop Arts District. The Galleria Dallas is one of the few malls you may actually still want to visit.

On the other hand, Houston strikes a chord with live performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre, accompanied by unique gastronomic delights around The Heights. Houston’s status as America’s fourth largest city, behind New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, means you’ll always find something to do.

With 50% of Dallas and 41% of Houston’s population being single, the dating sphere is buzzing with potential connections.

As far as cuisine, both cities have a thriving culinary scene. Dallas has world-class Vietnamese food, while both cities have amazing barbeque and Tex-mex/Mexican food.

As far as live sports, it depends what you’re into. Houston Astros, or Dallas Cowboys?

Outdoors in Dallas vs. Houston

If the great outdoor beckons you, Dallas and Houston serve up the perfect blend of urban parks, green spaces and scenic getaways. Both cities connect you to nature effortlessly without missing a beat on modern urban life.

Dallas has lovely green spaces for those looking to soak up the Texas sun. Spend a leisurely day at Klyde Warren Park or venture to White Rock Lake Park, where you can picnic, bike and even sail. Longing for a more rugged landscape? For a simple suburban hike closer to home or perhaps a family camping trip, the Cedar Ridge Preserve is mere miles from the city center.

Houston’s pride lies in its expansive Buffalo Bayou Park, the epitome of a natural oasis in the city. Meander along peaceful trails, savor the view from the iconic blue lunar cycle installation or hop on a kayak to see Houston from a different perspective. Craving a beach escape? The picturesque shores of Galveston Island and the tranquil sands of Surfside Beach are within reach, just a short drive away.

In Houston, the overall cost of living index is at 96.5, making it an affordable choice when compared to other cities in the United States. For general quality of life, it depends what you’re looking for. Dallas has better air quality,

Safety in Dallas vs. Houston

When it comes to safety, Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, have some work to do. In 2020, both areas had crime rates higher than the national average, painting a picture that isn’t all sunshine and roses. But numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Sure, the crime rate numbers — 625.4 for Houston and 366.5 per 100,000 for Dallas-Fort Worth — aren’t great. And yes, they’re higher than some similar-sized cities. But, community is key. Nearby Woodlands offers a great deal of safety if you’re looking to Houston.

There are neighborhoods in both cities that buck the trend and where folks look out for each other. Plus, falling crime rates in some parts show things can turn around.

UT Southwestern Medical Center is Dallas’s largest hospital, while the Houston Medical Center is one of the largest in the world.

That’s why we’ve done the research for you, so you don’t have to. You’ve no doubt seen our Dallas City Guide, which includes a short section on a few of Dallas’ most popular neighborhoods.

This list and our “Up and Coming Neighborhoods in Dallas,” “Best Suburbs of Dallas,” and our “Best Up and Coming Neighborhoods in Dallas” lists are more in-depth neighborhood guides meant to examine what it’s like living in each of these highlighted areas, with links to popular destinations, as well as available houses for sale and apartments for rent (and by the way of introduction, we’re Bellhopmovers in Dallas and beyond).

A Little About Dallas and its Neighborhoods

Big D. The ninth-largest city in the U.S. and the country’s fourth-largest metropolitan area. This city claims the title “the Heart of Texas,” and we can see why. Most obviously, Dallas is right in the center of the state. But the city is also famous for its friendly residents. It’s home to the country’s largest farmers market and the country’s largest urban arts district. And, with slow-cooked BBQ-smothered, thick-cut ribs, loaded chili dogs, and unrivaled Tex-Mex, Dallas boasts of some of the best dining destinations in the nation.

Home to 1.3 million happy locals, this city still has space for new residents in its 200+ unique neighborhoods. We’ve combed through the city and selected five neighborhoods that we think show off some of Dallas’ best. Follow along as we dive in closer and explore some of the greatest places to live in Big Ol’ Dallas.

Uptown

A historical area, Uptown has been home to young professionals since the late 1800s. It underwent extensive change in the 1990s and became a popular spot to live around 2000. The area is now full of some of the best places to eat, drink, and shop in the city, and features over 200 restaurants, 160 shops, and a large outdoor mall.

This area is full of a diverse range of residents who crave an exciting urban lifestyle, and locals enjoy the convenient public transportation, diverse cultural scene, and incredibly walkable grid of their home. Also, the McKinney Avenue Trolley transports residents around this neighborhood for free! Other locals tend to walk or bike to many of their destinations.

What’s Happening in Uptown

Uptown is full of a myriad of bars, restaurants, and nightlife spots. One of Dallas’s most walkable areas, Uptown is full of cafes, bars, boutiques, and restaurants that are just a few blocks away from many residential areas. One of this neighborhood’s and the city’s most famous restaurant is The Rustic. This charming spot has plenty of outdoor seating, homestyle cooking, and a tempting drink menu. Try a hand-crafted pale ale at Texas Ale Project or barbecue at Sammy’s Bar-B-Q.

Klyde Warren Park, a 5-acre oasis in the middle of the city, is a relatively new addition to the area and a popular outdoor destination. This park hosts year-round programs like fitness classes, dance lessons, lawn games, live music, and film screenings.

Schools in Uptown

Schools in the area include Ben Milam Elementary School, William B. Travis Academy, Booker T. Washington High School among others.

Homes in Uptown

Uptown is home to trendy areas full of modern condos and apartments as well as many older and rehabbed homes. Prices in this popular neighborhood in 2023 average $540,000 with fancier places going a lot higher.

Downtown

Dallas’ downtown offers a vibrant blend of shopping, activities, dining, and drinking. This city center is packed with amenities from museums to parks to hopping nightlife hubs. Recently, Dallas’ downtown has made a big push to develop a world-class art scene. And this vision has come into fruition with the development of the Arts District, one of the largest art districts in the country.

A business district by day, this neighborhood transforms into a thriving nightlife scene after dark. The area has seen a rapid amount of growth in the last few years in development and new residents. While downtown is mainly full of young professionals, there are plenty of activities and housing options for residents of all corners of life. If you’re looking to live in a place that balances a blend of art, education, and culture then Dallas’ downtown is your place to be.

What’s Happening in Downtown

We couldn’t list all the interesting shops, restaurants, events, attractions, and destinations in Dallas’ downtown if we tried. Residents continue to explore and discover new and exciting corners and hole-in-the-walls in this thriving city.

But a few of our favorite destinations and happenings include the Dallas Famers Market, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas World Aquarium, the Reunion Tower, and the Katy Trail. For great local grub, check out Cafe Momentum where they serve great fare while teaching at-risk kids culinary skills, and Pyramid, located in the fashionable Fairmont Hotel.

Schools in Downtown

Schools in the area include Pegasus School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, William B. Travis Academy, and Booker T. Washington High School among others.

Homes in Downtown

Dallas’ downtown offers a plethora of housing options, including newly renovated apartments, modern condos, affordable single-family houses, and upscale urban townhomes. Homes can cost an average of $866,000 in 2023.

Preston Hollow

Once home to George W. Bush and his wife, this elite neighborhood is full of aged oak trees, gorgeous homes, large lots, great private schools, and a homey ambiance. Preston Hollow has been a popular spot for families and young professionals for decades. And it sits just six miles north of downtown Dallas. It’s a great spot for those who want quieter streets, close access to the city, and a gorgeous place to call home.

What’s Happening in Preston Hollow

While Preston Hollow might sound fancy and exclusive, it’s actually a very welcoming destination for new residents and visitors. The neighborhood features some of the trendiest restaurants and family-friendly eateries in the city, like the award-winning Mercury, and popular Royal China offering family-style eating, handmade noodles and dumplings.

Preston Hollow sits between three of Dallas’ best shopping centers: the Preston Center, the Northpark Mall, and the Galleria. For more small-scale shopping, check out The Toy Maven, Ken’s Man’s Shop (fancy), and J. Renee Shoes for affordable women’s footwear.

Schools in Preston Hollow

Schools in the area include Preston Hollow Elementary School, Edward H Cary Middle School, and Emmett J. Conrad High School among others.

Homes in Preston Hollow

Housing ranges from modest and affordable cottages to highly elite and luxurious estates. Many of these grand homes were built in the ‘20s and ‘30s, but there are lots of homes being renovated and new constructions as well. Homes are valued at $650,000 with some condos available at $140,000.

Lake Highlands

Lake Highlands is popular among families and young couples who want to straddle the city and the suburbs. This neighborhood offers access to the great schools and job centers in the suburb of Richardson as well as affordable homes. But it sits about 10 miles north of the city center and all its amenities. Lake Highlands is decorated by massive oaks, old pecan trees, and rolling grassy hills. It’s a picturesque spot that has lured many once-urban-dwellers away from Dallas’ bustling inner city with its small-town-Texas feel.

What’s Happening in Lake Highlands

A night out or weekend at an event is as easy as driving 15 minutes from Lake Highlands to Dallas’ city center. But this neighborhood has several great eateries and destinations of its own. Some of the local favorites for dining and drinking options include Rex’s Seafood and Oak Highlands Brewery. (Checkout their place for pickleball and yoga). The nearby White Rock Lake offers outdoor space and hiking trails. Try the Northpark Center for some of the area’s best shopping spots.

Schools in Lake Highlands

Schools in the area include Lake Highlands School, Forest Meadow Junior High School, and Bending Oaks High School among others.

Homes in Lake Highlands

Lake Highlands offers lots of single-story ranch homes as well as some larger housing options. This area carries some of the heftiest price tags for the privilege of living here; Zillow shows a pricey $2.8M for an average home, $780K for a condo.

Bishop Arts District

Sitting ten minutes south of downtown, Bishop Arts District is full of trendy spots to eat, shop, and explore. There are performance venues, art galleries, nightlife hubs, community events, wine walks, and block parties all available to the lucky locals of this charming neighborhood.

Several years ago, this neighborhood was pinpointed by the Wall Street Journal as one of the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in the country. And while it did see a big influx of new residents in these past years, Bishop Arts District is still growing as we speak. Despite all this growth, residents in this community are close-knit and the area maintains its small-town vibe.

What’s Happening in Bishop Arts District

The few blocks of this small neighborhood packs in some of the hottest dining options in Dallas with high-end bistros, casual cafes, and cross-cultural cuisine. Visit Lucia for an Italian dish. Grab a drink at the nearby Whitehall Exchange or The Wild Detectives where you can browse books too. Try a hard cider at Bishop Cider.

Many of the older buildings in Bishop Arts District have been transformed into an eclectic array of unique and local shops. Stop by Zola’s Everyday Vintage and Artisan’s Collective to get a feel for this artsy area’s trending boutiques. Bishop Arts is also home to the performing arts and musical venues: the Kessler Theater and the Bishop Arts Theater Center. For an indie film and drinks, visit The Texas Theater.

Schools in Bishop Arts District

Schools in the area include Rosemont Elementary School, Trinity Basin Preparatory, and Booker T. Washington High School among others.

Homes in Bishop Arts District

Bishop Arts is a tiny spot, but residents continue to invest and find a place amidst the lofts, apartments, and quaint 1920s homes. Home prices vary with condition.

Over the past decade, the demand for craft beer has blazed through Northern Texas, leaving fertile soil for plenty of breweries to sprout. Amidst these dozens of taprooms in the Dallas region, we found many that embody all the things we love about craft breweries: the limitless innovation, brave ambition, inventive creativity, developed traditions, and entrepreneurial enthusiasm.

Put five Texans in a room and ask them their favorite pubs and barbecues. This can start a rowdy discussion with lots of passion and no agreement. That said, when pressed to pick, we narrowed the list down to 12 breweries that we believe shine brightest in the greater Dallas area. Keep reading to familiarize yourself with the best breweries in Dallas and Fort Worth.

Still thirsty after our reviews? Maybe the most objective (and safest!) approach would be a beer pub tour with BestDFWTours. It could be a great way to scout neighborhoods while you sip!

The 11 Best Breweries in Dallas, TX Bellhop Blog

Rahr & Sons Brewing Company

First on our list to the best breweries in Dallas is Rahr & Sons Brewing Company. The Rahr family’s love for beer began in America in 1847 when William Rahr and his family immigrated from Rhineland, Germany. Since William, thanks to his family history of brewers, could brew beer of better quality than “the typical kitchen brew,” he opened and successfully ran Eagle Brewery, the first lager brewery in Wisconsin. 160 years later, William’s great-great-grandson, Frederick William “Fritz” Rahr, Jr. followed his family-embedded craft and opened Rahr & Sons Brewing Co in 2004 and has been producing a wide range of quality brews since. Rahr & Sons prove that crafting fine beer comes with family heritage and hard work. They honor the lagering history of their family’s older brewery, showcasing several crisp, bready brews on their menu. Rahr & Sons knows how to brew well, and you’ll soon agree after sipping their IPAs, Scottish ales, Marzen lagers and lime-flavored concoctions. Lots of fun can be had here, including pickleball. Buy a $15 pitcher to reserve a 30-minute slot on the courts.

Try this: Paleta De Mango

The 11 Best Breweries in Dallas, TX Bellhop Blog
Try this: Paleta De Mango

This palette pleaser is juicy and tropical with flavors of ripe mango, fresh lime, and Mexican Pequin chiles. They offer seasonal variations as well – like peach! Buen provecho!

Martin House Brewing Company

Martin House makes beers that can be paired to any life experience – from hefty stouts to bright, light blonde ales. They feel no responsibility to brew their beers to style, and they let this boundless freedom inspire them to brew creative beers that taste great. They offer great bar food too.

The 11 Best Breweries in Dallas, TX Bellhop Blog
Try this: True Love raspberry sour ale

Extremely drinkable and hiding any evidence of its 5.2% ABV, this delicious berry brew will have you thinking about adventuring in no time. True Love has been kettle soured and fermented with fresh raspberry puree, giving the drink a bodacious purple hue. You’ll be crushing on this lush brew in no time, and you’ll easily know why they’re one of the best breweries in Dallas.

903 Brewers

Like many other successful breweries, 903 combines their drive for creativity with their respect for beers that are brewed to style. In preparation for opening, head brewer and founder Jeremy Roberts created a long list of recipes while homebrewing and tested them out on friends and family. By the time they opened in 2013, Jeremy had brewed hundreds of recipes and had found his balance of tradition and innovation that worked just perfectly for the locals. But tasty, interesting beers won’t be all that you enjoy when stopping by 903 Brewers. Schedule your visit during a trivia or movie night, grab a bite on Fridays from local food vendors on site, or take a tour through the brewery on Saturday. They offer go-beer and food and so stay, or order and take home your fave.

The 11 Best Breweries in Dallas, TX Bellhop Blog
Try this: Friday Slide

This brew was made to mimic a brilliantly smooth bar favorite – the Irish car bomb. Taking their flagship Chocolate Milk Stout base, 903 added Irish Cream and Irish Coffee to make some smooth, creamy, mocha delight.

On Rotation Brewery & Kitchen

On Rotation Brewery & Kitchen is a little different. Besides their own beers they offer other local breweries on their tap list – and there are plenty with 40 rotating taps of craft beer, cider, and hard seltzer. This may be the perfect spot to sit on their outdoor terrace, and sample widely, eat great grub (and save on gas)! They offer gluten-free fried chicken and other hand-made appetizers. One fan recommends trying their Jalapeño Saison.

Revolver Brewing

Revolver Brewing reached North Texas in 2012, and since then they’ve become one of the most popular craft breweries in the region. Their beers are straight forward, consistent, brewed to style, with good variation. Any embellishments to their recipes are thoughtful but few, which makes this brewery approachable to the masses. And this has not gone unnoticed by big dog MillerCoors, who recently bought Revolver Brewing. But the owners promised us that the MillerCoors acquisition won’t fundamentally alter Revolver, just distribute their beers a bit further so their quality beers can be more widely enjoyed.

The 11 Best Breweries in Dallas, TX Bellhop Blog
Try this: Sangre Y Miel

Revolver made our list for best breweries in Dallas because of their diligence. They tried their hand at the first sour on the menu with this tart beaut. Taking one of their top sellers, Revolver aged the Wild Ale style beer brew for over one year in Chardonnay barrels, creating a tart, lemony, and spiced beer. If sour and strong doesn’t match your style, try the original, lighter and less tart version of Sangre Y Miel, the Blood & Honey American Ale, which has been brewed with blood orange peel and fermented with Texas honey. Sit down when drinking: 7% ABV.

Peticolas Brewing Company

A true startup, this brewery grew from the work of one man and many volunteers with no experience in the brewing industry. Michael Peticolas gained inspiration from the delicious brews his mom would make for him and the family on long, hot Texas summers. Despite their humble beginnings, Peticolas began winning numerous local and national awards within the first year of operations, including two gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival! The tap room features beautiful, light-stained wooden tables, and several open levels. Find a variety of beer styles from the 18 brews on tap, including a few that pour deliciously on nitro.

The 11 Best Breweries in Dallas, TX Bellhop Blog
Try this: Sledge Hammer

A bulked-up version of Peticolas’ first award-winning red ale, Velvet Hammer, this beer is made with the first runnings – the good stuff – of the Velvet Hammer brew. Then, combining this sweet, strong liquid with a lot of hops, Peticolas presented its drinkers with a bigger, stronger version of one of their favorite brews. If it worked the first time, why not see if it works on steroids.

They don’t offer food so bring your own. They won’t mind!

Hop & Sting Brewing

Located in historic Grapevine, this relatively new brewery has been winning accolades from avid fans and local media. Hop & Sting bought the assets and wisdom of Grapevine Brewing, settled into their space and immediately proved their worth. In 2021 the two, biggest local newspapers’ readers voted it the #1 brewery in greater DFW, with the best music, and the most Dog Friendly. Woof! Bring Lucky Dog and settle in on their outdoor patio. Try any of their 16 great beers or the original Sir William English brown ale made famous by Grapevine Brewing.

Vector Brewing

Vector Brewing Is new to the Dallas scene and making waves in Lake Highlands. It offers craft made beers made right there behind the bar, plus mead, stouts, ciders and wine. Pizzas are made by hand and get great reviews. There is often live music on the patio and a friendly low-key vibe. Try the cherry imperial sour, full of flavor, tart and delicious. They offer food and beer to go and have an 8PM curfew for kids.

Four Corners Brewing Company

Four Corners Brewing Company is where cultural values, local roots, boundless innovation, and craft beer intersect. This scrappy startup was started by two guys making beer in their kitchen and aging it in their bathroom tub. Now, with much success behind they boot-strapped into the gorgeous taproom, bombed with color, was built into a former carriage house from the 1900s. Inside, there’s a constant flow of unique beers, kombucha, soda, and sparkling water to quench any of your thirsty cravings. This brewery celebrates the beautiful blend of Texan culture, their logo being a proud rooster, and cans decorated with the stunning, vibrant colors and features of Hispanic countries. Join the community there on their weeknight events like Vinyasa and Brew, Trivia Night, and Loteria (a quintessential Mexican bingo-like game).

The 11 Best Breweries in Dallas, TX Bellhop Blog
Try this: La Lechuza

This 8% ABV s’more stout draws the drinker away to the hill country, snug in a sleeping bag under a starry night, with a spooky owl story to boot. The rich, robust body of this brew creates a duet of milk and dark chocolate with a vanilla marshmallow taste and mouthfeel. The very low bitterness, if any, comes from the roasted malts, and its low carbonation makes this drink smooth and creamy. If you’re lucky enough to catch this release in October, savor the tasty drink as you do the short cold seasons before the dry Texan heat blows once more, and taste for yourself why Four Corners made our list to the best breweries in Dallas.

Lakewood Brewing Company

Born in Belgium, Lakewood Brewing founder, Wim Bens, considered Texas his home, but couldn’t find that taste-of-Belgium amidst Texan beers, until he happened upon American craft breweries and their experimental styles. This discovery and a love for both art and science drove Bens directly toward the career goal of opening his own brewery. And in 2012, Lakewood Brewing Company opened its doors. Though Bens made sure to incorporate plenty of seating in his large and open taproom, his beers bring crowds to the brewery, and they often find themselves packed to capacity. Make sure to snag yourself some suds and a seat quick! Want to make a lot of friends; their special party venue can seat up to 400!

The 11 Best Breweries in Dallas, TX Bellhop Blog
Try this: All Call Kolsch

Lakewood searched to find the perfect recipe for a bright, light, crispy Kolsch and they landed on All Call. This American Blonde Ale style beer is slightly fruity and has a clean dry finish, perfect for new and experienced craft beer drinkers alike. Pair bread with bread and order yourself a Pit Commander Texapolitan Pizza pie (served Tuesday-Sunday).

Community Beer Company

If the name didn’t make it clear enough, their mission, branding, beers, and vibe does: This brewery exists to build community. They believe that beer can be an integral part of influencing local culture and creating memorable experiences, and they take their beers seriously as well as their part in supporting local artists, musicians, and charities. They succeeded in a big way cuz this pub is on everyone’s short list. They recently moved into a new, 70,000 square foot facility with plenty of outdoor space for fun and games. Join them for some jovial trivia nights or their Pints & Pups dog-rescue event. Enjoy some of their rarer, canned seasonals, like their summer release, Razzy, a Belgian-style witbier with raspberries, or their late fall release, Snickerdoodle Ale, which is a spiced, mild ale with cinnamon and vanilla. But Community Beer also brews a wide variety of inclusive core beers, making sure that everyone who walks into the taproom can find something they like.

Try this: Silly Gose

Community Beer Company takes a twist on this 1,000-year-old German-style brew. Their Gose is tart and tropical with tangerine peel and apricot puree. It’s been such a hit, that Community Beer has established Silly Gose a spot on their year-round lineup this year. Taste the tart sipper yourself and see how this Silly Gose is quite seriously delicious.

Deep Ellum Brewing Company

Locals can’t decide whether the beer or the brilliant events keep bringing them back to Deep Ellum Brewing Company. With over twenty unique recipes like their American sour blonde ale, Play Date, and nearly monthly exciting events like their Brew-BQ and the Annual Charity Chili Cookoff, locals are hard pressed to decide. Because Deep Ellum is doing both things right.

Founder of Deep Ellum, John Reardon, sought out to blow past the status quo of beer (what he describes as “watching big, corporate breweries pumping out the same old dull, watered-down stuff, slapping a different label on it, and telling you that you have choices”). In response to “watching beer’s good name being tarnished,” the people of Deep Ellum Brewing Company pledged to let their beer do the talking, remember their roots, and never serve a glass of bad beer. So far, most everyone who leaves their brewery thinks Deep Ellum has honored this bold beer-festo.

Deep Ellum Brewing Company is happily snug among the dozens of arts and entertainment venues composing the rest of the rowdy, Deep Ellum neighborhood. And the brewery fits right in with the area’s quirky and unbound art. Their taproom and beer labels are a sporadic Crayola box of colors. It’s playful, carefree, and does have a twinge of sticking it to the macrobrew man through the loud, bold, and colorful branding.

Try this: Deep Summer

Though certainly not the wildest brew on the menu, this summer ale will build your trust for Deep Ellum’s brewing skills and style. Once you’ve seen how easily they’ve balanced the challenging and delicate flavors of hibiscus, lemon peel, and chamomile flowers, you’ll be ready to jump into some of the more experimental recipes Deep Ellum offers, like their Neato Bandito, an imperial Mexican Style lager, or their Four Swords, a 4-year Cabernet red wine barrel-aged Belgian-style quadruple. Step onto this spiced summer train, and enjoy the rest of the ride that Deep Ellum has in store.

It’s a little risky to dive into a new city without really knowing anything about it. That’s why we’ve done the research for you. You’ve no doubt seen our Dallas City Guide, which includes a short section on a few of Dallas’ most popular neighborhoods.

This list is a more in-depth neighborhood guide meant to examine what it’s like living in each of these highlighted areas, with sneak peeks into popular destinations, as well as the neighborhood’s specific housing styles and top schools (and by the way of introduction, we’re Bellhop — movers in Dallas and beyond).

What is Life Like in Dallas?

Dallas has claimed the title, “the Heart of Texas,” and you don’t have to dig very deep to understand why. Most obviously, Dallas is right in the center of the state. But the city is also famous for its friendly and welcoming residents.

Before starting we have to say that Dallas is just part of the bigger Dallas – Fort Worth metropolitan area. Combined, their population is well over 7.5 million and ranks fourth largest in the country. It’s just because both Dallas and Fort Worth have grown so much closer, and share a great airport that we think of them as ‘DFW.’

The city of Dallas counts 1.3 million folks. The city has bragging rights as the largest in the state and likes to remind Houston that it is.

Things in Texas don’t come small, and Dallas isn’t an exception. This big-hearted city is home to the country’s largest farmers market and largest urban arts district.

Dallas has made a big mark on the foodie map, serving up some of the best dishes in the nation:

  • Slow-cooked BBQ
  • Smothered, thick-cut ribs
  • Loaded chili dogs
  • Unrivaled Tex-Mex, though other cities like San Antonio, Austin and El Paso with strong Hispanic culture may challenge that.

Food and great breweries aside, this city still has space for new residents in its 200+ unique neighborhoods.

We’ve combed through the city and selected 5 of Dallas’ neighborhoods that we think will fit your family best. Come along as we dive in closer and explore some of the greatest, family-friendly places to live in Big Ol’ Dallas.

Highland Park

This highly affluent town in central Dallas County is a magnet for well-off families. The area boasts of very low crime rates, a healthy job market, and luxury amenities.

What’s Happening in Highland Park

Highland Park is pretty enough that a Sunday stroll down shaded streets could become your favorite weekend activity. But the area offers high-class shopping and dining as well. Locals looking for a little more weekend fun can easily access the many bars and nightclubs in nearby Uptown, Knox-Henderson, and Downtown.

Highland Park Village is absolutely posh and acts as the buzzing center of town. The oldest outdoor mall in the U.S., Highland Park Village sells luxury goods and designer labels, like Gucci, Chanel, and Harry Winston. You’ll also find a wide variety of great restaurants like Cafe Pacific (seafood) and Mi Cocina for innovative Tex-Mex plates, plus frozen Margaritas.

This high-class town also contains several recreational centers, including Lakeside Park, Fairfax Park, and Jester Park. These manicured outdoor spaces are complete with swan ponds, fountains, tennis courts, and walking paths.

Since then, it has grown to become one of the premier school districts in the country. Today, there are eight campuses composed of elementary, intermediate, middle, and high schools, and 63% of its teachers hold a Master’s degree. 85% of households are college-educated, 99% have high school graduates, computers and high-speed Internet, more indicators of affluence and commitment to great education.

Homes in Highland Park

Highland Park’s beautiful collection of old homes sit aside tall trees, broad streets, and winding creekside landscapes. Many homes in Highland Park date back to the 1920s. And any newer construction follows the vernacular style designs that help keep the area’s old-world charm. Zillow shows a pricey $2.8M for an average home, $780K for a condo.

Some of Dallas’s best architects who have created eclectic homes of English, French, Mediterranean, and neoclassical styles designed the homes in Highland Park.

Schools in Lakewood

Lakewood is known for its excellent schools, both public and private. Schools like Woodrow Wilson High School, Lakehill Preparatory School, and Dallas Academy all have excellent reputations and are great options for your kiddos.

Homes in Lakewood

From historic gems to stunning new builds, from extraordinary estates to cute cottages, Lakewood’s housing has charm. The prices for homes In the Lakewood zip code (75206) average $575,000 in mid-2023.

University Park

Located in central Dallas County, about 8 miles north of downtown, and 38 miles east of Fort Worth, University Park is set in the perfect position. Despite its proximity to the city, University Park’s broad tree-lined streets and early 20th-century architecture are distinctly different from the gleaming skyscrapers and office buildings of downtown.

Considered an “Inner Suburb,” University Park still has plenty of bustling. This upscale Dallas neighborhood is packed with shops and restaurants, as well as some of Dallas’s breweries. Now one of the most prestigious enclaves in Dallas, University Park boasts of charming old homes, new construction, and an exemplary-rated school district.

What’s Happening in University Park

Locals of University Park can get to downtown without having to get on one of those often-clogged highways. But within its own borders, residents can easily access grocery stores and charming corner cafes, cookie shops, and French bakeries. Sandwich shops, laid-back coffee shops, and local boutiques surround Snider Plaza. Thirsty? Try either Pegasus City Brewery or Celestial Beerworks to make new friends.

University Park’s name doesn’t lie. The area is packed with 20 local parks, including Goar Park, Burleson Prak, Curtis Park, Coffee Park, Germany Park, and Elana’s Children’s Park. The nearby Caruth Park is home to a fishing pond and playgrounds.

What’s Happening in Preston Hollow

Preston Hollow sits between three of Dallas’ best shopping centers:

  • The Preston Center

Schools in Preston Hollow

In fact, Uptown is home to one of the city’s most famous restaurants, The Rustic. This charming spot has plenty of outdoor seating, homestyle cooking, and a tempting drink menu. Aside from being one of Dallas’s best family-friendly neighborhoods, it’s also anup-and-coming neighborhood within the city. Try a hand-crafted pale ale at Texas Ale Project or barbecue at Sammy’s Bar-B-Q.

Klyde Warren Park, a 5-acre oasis in the middle of the city, is a relatively new addition to the area and a popular outdoor destination. Families frequently gather here for year-round programs like fitness classes, dance lessons, lawn games, live music, and film screenings.

Looking to move to the Greater Dallas area, and Irving caught your eye? Learn what some of the best neighborhoods for families are within this part of the greater Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex.

What You Should Know About Irving

Home to about 240,000 residents, Irving is an inner-ring suburb of Dallas, located about ~10 miles northwest of the heart of the city. Residents can hop on I-35E and be downtown within 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

One notable attraction in Irving is the Irving Arts Center, a 10-acre theater complex that features comedy shows (Steve Martin performed there in July), live orchestras, and art exhibits. The Mandalay Canal Walk at Los Colinas, complete with a gondola ride, is like taking a piece of Venice, modernizing it, and transporting it to Texas – a huge draw for citizens and visitors.

Additionally, Irving has one of the most diverse populations in the United States. According to DataUSA:

  • 43.2% of the population is Hispanic.
  • 20.5% of the population is Asian
  • 20.3% is white, non-Hispanic.
  • 13.6% is Black or African American.

In fact, Irving lays claim to the most diverse ZIP code in the United States.

This is a great place with lots of opportunities for residents to grow and thrive.

How Family Friendly is Irving?

With that said, Irving is very family-friendly.

According to BestPlaces, Irving has a lower-than-average violent crime rate. The US average is 22.7 (instances per 100k people) while the Irving average is only 13.4.

However, like many cities across North America, there are areas of Irving that are more dangerous than others. The northeast side of the city, north of John W Carpenter Freeway, is considered by many to be one of the safest parts of the city. Most of the crimes that are committed in Irving are typically in the southern part of the city.

Accordingly, our list of the best neighborhoods for families in Irving have some of the lowest crime rates out of any neighborhood in the DFW metroplex. All of the neighborhoods below rank within the top 10 of the safest neighborhoods in Irving, with crime rates more than half as low as some of the more dangerous areas in Irving.

Irving’s Most Family-Friendly Neighborhoods

Las Colinas

Possibly one of the most popular neighborhoods in Irving, Las Colinas tops the list for family-friendly neighborhoods in the area. Designed in 1972 by Ben H Carpenter, Las Colinas is home to a mixture of residential dwellings built around sprawling lakes with plenty of greenery as well as commercial highrises, which are home to some of the biggest corporations in Irving, such as Exxon Mobil.

Whether you’re looking for a cozy single-family home or a swanky apartment in a highrise, Las Colinas offers something for everyone. If you or someone you know is looking to move to the Dallas area, Bellhop can help by setting up a plan that works with your budget and timeline.

Schools in Las Colinas

Las Colinas belongs to the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. With a B+ overall Niche grade, they are ranked #9 of the best school districts in Dallas County. You can rest assured that your children will be getting a high-quality public education if you move to this neighborhood.

Things to Do in Las Colinas

There are over 56 small parks and lakes in Las Colinas, and the area has no shortage of trendy bars, restaurants, and cafes within walking distance. As of the time of this writing, The Ranch at Las Colinas, Yard House, and Via Real all rank among the top places to eat. The Mustangs are also a popular Las Colinas attraction. In the heart of the downtown area, in the middle of a few highrises, the nine bronze horses represent the drive and initiative of the pioneers who founded the area.

Average Home Price in Las Colinas

The median home in Irving, as of September 2023, goes for about $660k. This makes it a more affordable option than some of the richest neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas.

Valley Ranch

Valley Ranch is home to five miles of winding canals and walkways, making it one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in the area – and a great place to raise a family. The Dallas Morning News called Valley Ranch one of the best neighborhoods for “urban sophisticates” due to its walkability and established neighborhoods.

Schools in Valley Ranch

Valley Ranch belongs to two different school districts, depending on where you live within the neighborhood. The Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD is one of them, and it’s mentioned above since it’s one of the best school districts in Dallas County. The other is Coppell ISD, which has an A+ ranking on Niche and is ranked as the #1 “Best School District in Dallas County.”

Things to Do in Valley Ranch

Cimarron Park has plenty of walkways and trails to help you dissolve some of the stress of the workday as well as a recreation center and playgrounds for the kids. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon. Additionally, Valley Ranch offers a variety of restaurants and cafes to choose from. Bruno’s Ristorante Seafood & Steaks and Our Place Indian Cuisine are among the favorites for residents in the area.

Average Home Price in Valley Ranch

The average home price in Valley Ranch, according to Redfin, is around $530,000

Hospital District

The Hospital District in Irving, true to its name, is located very close to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center. The actual neighborhood boundaries of the Hospital District are much smaller than those of Las Colinas and Valley Ranch.

Located in the northern section of Irving, this area is a small square encompassing only a few streets, with I-183 to the north, North O’Connor Rd to the east, W Grauwyler Rd to the south, and N MacArthur Blvd to the west. However, its location earns it one of the top spots on our list. The Hospital District’s close proximity to DFW Airport (just a ~9 minute drive northwest) and everything that Las Colinas has to offer is just a short drive up MacArthur Blvd.

Additionally, with the Irving Police Department Headquarters located directly south, this is one of the safer neighborhoods in Irving.

Schools in Hospital District

The Hospital District belongs to Irving ISD. According to Niche, it has a B rating and it’s #11 on the Best School Districts in Dallas County.

Things to Do in Hospital District

The Hospital District is more centrally located than Las Colinas and Valley Ranch, making it easier to explore everything that Irving has to offer. Taqueria El Arquito, Copper and Vine, and the Original ChopShop are all big draws for residents.

Average Home Price in Hospital District

The Hospital District is a bit more affordable than the other areas, with an average home price of about $400k. This makes it a great option for families with a little bit less purchasing power who still want to move to Irving.

Hackberry Creek

Hackberry Creek is a gated community sandwiched between Valley Ranch to the north and Las Colinas to the south. The Hackberry Creek Country Club, complete with an 18-hole golf course designed by professional golfer Byron Nelson, is a major attraction for residents. As one of the premier gated communities in Irving, it’s definitely one of the safer – if not the safest – neighborhoods for families.

Schools in Hackberry Creek

Hackberry Creek, just like Las Colinas, is part of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District, the #9 best school district in Dallas County.

Things to Do in Hackberry Creek

Due to its proximity to both Valley Ranch and Las Colinas, the same things that those areas have to offer, Hackberry Creek also has! However, even if you aren’t interested in becoming a member of the country club, a walk around the park-like neighborhoods in this area is a great respite from the day.

Average Home Price in Hackberry Creek

The average home price in Hackberry Creek is around ~$770k. However, keep in mind that HoA fees run north of $2500+ annually. With gated access and other amenities, most residents are more than happy to pay the extra fee, but it’s something you’ll have to work into your budget. This makes it one of the more expensive options on this list, but a great one for families that can afford it.

That’s It – The Best Neighborhoods for Families in Irving, Texas

Some of the best neighborhoods include:

  • Las Colinas
  • Valley Ranch
  • Hospital District
  • Hackberry Creek

They each have their own benefits – and they’re all fantastic options for families. If you’re thinking about moving to the Dallas area, Bellhop has you covered with custom plans and a cooperative team, so you’re not stressed during your moving day.

The post Where Are People Moving to Dallas From? appeared first on Bellhop.

]]>
Americans have long seen Texas – particularly its big cities like Dallas – as a place where you can reinvent yourself. So, it’s no surprise that Texas has been seeing high rates of in-country migration, trailing only Florida as the most-popular-state-to-move-to in the latest census data.

Apart from that almost-mythical sense of limitless possibility, why are people moving to Dallas and where are they coming from? It’s fairly easy to figure that out using data tools provided by the Census Flows Mapper from the Department of Census. And we can also see where and why Dallas residents are relocating from Dallas to other places in Texas and across America.

While it’s fun to look at charts and graphs and dream about a new life, the ebb and flow of population movement also provides a fascinating glimpse into the broader socio-economic and cultural shifts across the United States. So, let’s take a deep dive into this data.

How did we get these numbers?

The Census Flows Mapper leverages the American Community Survey (ACS) data, providing annual estimates of migration flows at the county and metro area level. By analyzing residential movement over a 12-month period, it provides insights into patterns that shape our urban landscapes.

This information is based on data from the most recently released American Community Survey (ACS). The survey is the primary source for detailed population and housing information about our nation.

Who’s moving to Dallas, Texas and why?

All that data in the Flows Mapper can really make your brain tense up. But poke around a bit and you’ll see it’s pretty easy to figure out. You can see that Texas has seen a net migration increase from 31 states, while experiencing a net migration loss with 18 states.

Most of the people who moved to Texas came from California –a trend that is so strong it has been dubbed the “Texodus.” In the latest data set, we can see that about 111,000 people made the move from California to Texas in 2021. Most of them are millennials with an above-average annual household income of $114,000. But it goes both ways, some people leaving the Lone Star State headed to the Golden State.

Top Cross-Country Moves to Dallas:

According to the ACS data, Dallas County was among the top three counties in Texas to see the highest number of newcomers in 2021, with around 45,000 people inbound. Harris County (home to Dallas) had the most arrivals with 69,000 arrivals, followed by Bexar County (San Antonio) with 48,000.

Here’s where most of the new residents of Dallas came from:

Los Angeles: The highest number of folks who moved to Dallas are moved from Los Angeles. The high cost of living in Los Angeles is the most commonly cited reason for folks moving from the City of Angels. Dallas offers a lower cost of living without sacrificing urban amenities or cultural diversity.

Chicago: It’s not hard to guess why people are moving from Chicago for the south – why live where the wind hurts your face? Besides a warmer climate, people reported that Dallas has economic advantages and a more business-friendly environment.

Phoenix: In contrast to Chicago residents seeking a less-harsh winter, folks moving from Phoenix would like the weather to be a little more temperate. They also cite Phoenix’s rapidly growing population as a reason for leaving the city, as well as Dallas’ more varied job market as prime reasons for moving.

Top Cross-Country Destinations from Dallas

People who are lucky enough to be born in Texas are the least likely in the nation to move out of their home state, according to new research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. But some people do wander off. Here’s where they mostly end up:

Los Angeles: Dallas residents may be lured by Los Angeles’s entertainment industry, cultural amenities, and the sun soaked, easy-living allure of the West Coast.

Phoenix, Arizona: One person’s too-hot desert is another person’s happy place. Dallas residents moving to Phoenix say they like the warm, dry climate, growing tech sector, and scenic beauty.

Charlotte, North Carolina: Known as a financial hub, Charlotte‘s banking sector is a strong enticement for Dallas professionals seeking opportunities in finance.

Brooklyn, New York: Specifically, not New York City, but Brooklyn is where folks from Dallas head when they point themselves north. Brooklyn offers cultural vibrancy and a myriad of career opportunities, especially for those in the arts, media, and tech industries.

Chicago: More people are moving from Chicago to Dallas than vice-versa, but some folks are heading to the Windy City. Family ties, cultural offerings, diverse industries, and that unique Midwestern charm are the draws.

Top In Texas Moves

As noted above, people born in Texas tend to stay in Texas, but that doesn’t mean they stay put in one spot. Texans from the cities below are currently the most likely to move to Dallas.

Houston: While the city offers a robust energy sector and diverse culture, those moving from Houston folks say they make the move to Dallas for its thriving tech industry, cultural hubs, and relatively lower cost of living compared to Houston and some other major cities.

San Antonio: The city’s rich cultural history and slower pace of living is perfect for many, but those seeking broader economic opportunities and a livelier lifestyle are moving from San Antonio to Dallas.

Austin: Despite its booming tech industry and music scene, folks are moving from Austin to Dallas for its larger economy, diversified job market, and corporate opportunities.

What’s great about living in Dallas?

According to data from the Census Flows Mapper, and our own local team of Dallas movers, here’s why anyone would want to live in Dallas:

Economic Opportunities: Dallas is an economic powerhouse with a significant number of corporate headquarters, making it a hub for job seekers.

Cost of Living: Dallas, though not the cheapest city in the nation, often offers a better cost of living than cities like Los Angeles, especially in terms of housing.

Educational Institutions: Dallas is home to various reputed institutions and universities, attracting students and academics.

Cultural Scene: Dallas offers a mix of Texan culture with a modern urban vibe, drawing in individuals who seek both tradition and modern vibes.

Diversity: Dallas has a mix of cultures, which is reflected in its neighborhoods, food, festivals, and more.

Foodie Heaven: From authentic Tex-Mex and BBQ joints to a plethora of international cuisines, Dallas is a haven for food lovers.

Sports: Dallas is home to the Dallas Cowboys (NFL), Dallas Mavericks (NBA), Texas Rangers (MLB), and Dallas Stars (NHL), among other teams. The passion for sports is intense in the city.

Arts and Culture: The Dallas Arts District is one of the largest urban arts districts in the U.S. You’ll find the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, and the Crow Collection of Asian Art all in close proximity.

Charlotte, North Carolina, affectionately known as the “Queen City,” is gaining a reputation as a southern hub for the LGBTQA+ community. With a rich tapestry of history, welcoming neighborhoods, and progressive movements, the city is blossoming into a space where everyone can find both community and acceptance.

Charlotte’s LGBTA+ history went mostly undocumented until 1968, when Oleen’s and The Scorpio Lounge opened. Oleen’s was “The Show Bar of the South,” known for launching the careers of some of the city’s most legendary drag queens. It closed in 1997. The Scorpio, still open for business, began its life as a disco and drag show venue and has evolved back to its roots. Expect big (wildly diverse) crowds and much festivity here.

The 70s and early 80s marked the launch of Charlotte’s first-ever gay publication, the Charlotte Free Press and what is now the nation’s longest running lesbian journal, Sinister Wisdom. In 1981, the Queen City Quordinators debuted as a fundraising-focused organization and put together North Carolina’s first-ever Pride events.

The 1990s brought a wave of advocacy, with the foundation of groups like the LGBT Community Center, and a broader acceptance of the LGBTQ community. For more details, check out the City of Charlotte’s excellent timeline of local LGBTQA+ history.

LGBTIQA+ Charlotte Now – Facts and Figures

It’s challenging to pin down exact numbers regarding how many residents identify as LGBTQ, as census data doesn’t always include comprehensive sexual orientation demographics. However, studies from groups like the Williams Institute have estimated that North Carolina’s LGBTQ population is around 4.5% of adults, which would break down to tens of thousands of folks in Charlotte. We bet the actual percentage/numbers are significantly higher.

The city’s first pride parade was organized in the 1990s, and since then, the annual Charlotte Pride event has grown exponentially, from 2,000 attendees in 2001 to roughly 260,000 people at the 2023 event.

Safety and Community Support

Unfortunately, Charlotte has a crime rate of 40 per 1,000 residents, which is one of the highest in the United States. This means that there is a 1 in 25 chance of becoming a victim of violent or property crime. Hate crimes are classified as a misdemeanor in North Carolina, and so carry a relatively light penalty. Charolotte state Senator Jay Chaudhuri has been trying to pass a Hate Crimes Prevention Act for five years, with no success yet.

Charlotte is currently seeing a drop in crime, but there is no reporting for hate crimes. As in any urban area, it’s important to be alert and aware of your surroundings. If you’re considering moving to Charlotte, you’ll also want to delve into the crime rates for the specific area you’re considering and perhaps visit the area during different times to get a personal feel for the environment.

Back in 2016, North Carolina’s House Bill 2 (HB2) required individuals to use restrooms corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates in government buildings. After boycotts and plenty of backlash, the bill was repealed in 2017. The state does not currently have laws protecting against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, but Charlotte is working to be more progressive. In 2021, the Charlotte City Council unanimously passed an updated non-discrimination ordinance that included expanded protections for sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

Good places to know about in Charlotte include:

Twirl to the World and its TAP emergency assistance program that provides financial support, health services and basic goods for LGBTQ adults in the Charlotte metropolitan area.

Charlotte Pride is now one of the largest LGBTQ Pride organizations in the American Southeast. It offers a wealth of programs, projects, and activities, including the annual Charlotte Pride Festival and Parade, Charlotte Pride Interfaith Programs, and Reel Out Charlotte, The Queen City’s Annual LGBTQ Film Festival, among others.

The LGBT Chamber of Commerce, based in Uptown, plays an instrumental role in fostering an inclusive business environment, ensuring LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs and customers find support.

Charlotte’s Best Gay-Friendly Neighborhoods

Plaza Midwood

Just east of Charlotte’s Uptown district, Plaza Midwood has long been a beacon for the city’s LGBTQA+ community. Established in the early 20th century, this eclectic and vibrant neighborhood has grown to become one of Charlotte’s most inclusive, offering a unique mix of historic charm and modern flair.

Plaza Midwood brims with diversity, offering a refreshing blend of cultures and backgrounds. Walking its streets, you’ll see a mix of restored early-1900s bungalows juxtaposed against chic urban condos. Murals and street art are prevalent, showcasing the neighborhood’s creative spirit. The residents are supportive and protective of their neighbors, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

What’s happening in Plaza Midwood?

Heads up: most places in this neighborhood, whether explicitly LGBTQ+-oriented or not, welcome everyone with open arms.

NoDa is just north of Uptown Charlotte, and is a neighborhood renowned for its bohemian spirit, inclusive vibe, colorful murals, and vibrant arts scene. Its name derives from its primary street, North Davidson. The area is packed with art galleries, music venues, and theaters. Streets are lined with a blend of historic buildings and modern architecture, giving the area a unique aesthetic.

The LGBTQ+ presence is strong here, and you’ll see rainbow flags and pride-centric art pieces on many windows and walls. Local businesses and residents alike often rally in support of LGBTQ+ issues and events. Whether you’re an artist seeking inspiration, an LGBTQA+ individual looking for community, or simply someone wanting to enjoy a vibrant atmosphere, you’ll find it in NoDa.

  • Stroll down North Davidson Street to check out street art and do a little shopping.

South End

Adjacent to Uptown Charlotte lies South End, a bustling and rapidly evolving neighborhood known for its modern charm, historical significance, and a robust array of dining and entertainment venues.

Once an industrial zone, it’s been revitalized into a dynamic urban locale. Old mills have become chic lofts, and dilapidated buildings have been transformed into trendy eateries and boutiques. The neighborhood’s aesthetic is a harmonious blend of the old and the new, marked by the iconic Rail Trail, a pedestrian pathway that teems with art and activity. With a notable presence of the LGBTQ+ community, South End seamlessly blends its history with a forward-thinking spirit.

What’s happening in South End

The South End is known for its vibrant arts and brewery scene rather than being specifically renowned for LGBTQ+-centered venues. That said, many venues pride themselves on being welcoming and inclusive to all, including the LGBTQ+ community. Some of our favorite places include:

  • Price’s Chicken Coop is famous for its fried chicken.
  • Hawkers Asian Street Fare offers a wide variety of casual Asian foods
  • Wooden Robot Brewery is a popular brewery with a gastropub feel.
  • Sycamore Brewing is known for its craft beers and frequent events.
  • The Suffolk Punch features a coffee bar, culinary café, and fermentation lab.

  • The South End Rail Trail often becomes a canvas for LGBTQ+ celebrations, particularly during Pride month. The pathway hosts various art installations and events, many of which emphasize LGBTQ+ themes and inclusivity.

]]>
Dallas has long been known for its sports teams, cowboy culture, and thriving business districts and, somewhat more recently, for its dynamic and evolving LGBTIQA+ scene.

The history of the community in Dallas is a testament to resilience, unity, and mutual support. By the late 1960s, Dallas had an emerging gay neighborhood, Oak Lawn, which gradually became the epicenter of the LGBTIQA+ community. This was also the time when the first openly gay and lesbian bars started appearing. The AIDS crisis in the 1980s sparked a more public presence, with the community working to provide support and resources for everyone affected.

Activism intensified in the 90s and early 2000s, leading to significant momentum in acceptance and visibility. Events like the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade, originally known as the Dallas Gay Pride Parade, which started in 1983, became annual celebrations of LGBTQ pride and rights.

LGBTIQA+ Dallas Now – Facts and Figures

Recent estimates suggest that approximately 4.1% of Dallas residents identify as LGBTQA+. Many believe the actual percentage is higher.

Dallas, in general, is increasingly recognized as gay-friendly. In terms of legislation, Texas does not have a statewide non-discrimination law that explicitly includes sexual orientation or gender identity. However, Dallas City Council passed an ordinance in 2002 that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment, housing, and public accommodations. It later expanded the ordinance in 2015 to include gender identity.

Dallas’s Best Gay-Friendly Neighborhoods

Oak Lawn

The epicenter of gay life in Dallas, and the traditional staging area for the annual Dallas Pride parade, Oak Lawn stands out for its diversity and inclusivity.

What’s happening in Oak Lawn? Cedar Springs Road is the main artery of the Oak Lawn district, particularly the area north of Oak Lawn Blvd. and west of Lemmon Ave that’s known as “The Strip.” Here, you’ll find a plethora of gay bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and shops that cater to the LGBTQA+ community, including:

  • JR’s Bar & Grill: One of the most recognizable gay bars on The Strip, JR’s offers feisty drinks and music, a large outdoor patio, and plenty of special events.
  • Sue Ellen’s: A lesbian bar that’s welcoming to everyone. Sue Ellen’s has multiple levels so you can choose the vibe that fits your mood – from chill lounge to lively dancing.
  • The Round-Up Saloon: Looking to do some line dancing at a country-western themed gay bar? Head to Round-Up. If you can’t dance country-style, they’ll teach you. Or you can just hang out and listen to the music.
  • Station 4 (S4): With all the themed party nights, you’ll never be bored here. Hit the dance floor and check out the show in the Rose Room.
  • The Hidden Door: Feeling social but not in the mood for a high energy scene? The outdoor patio at the Hidden Door is where you want to be.
  • Kodiak’s Restaurant and Bar: Kodiak’s is a low-key but fun place to relax, eat and drink with your friends.
  • Dallas Woody’s Sports & Video Bar: Catch a game, sing some karaoke, meet and mingle, and watch the people.

Safety and Community Support

Oak Lawn is generally considered safe and welcoming, but like all urban areas, it has faced occasional incidents of crime and, sadly, sometimes hate crimes. Local businesses and community members have often rallied together to address these issues and support victims.

Oak Lawn is home to several organizations and establishments that support the LGBTQ+ community. The Resource Center, for instance, provides health services, community programs, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ people of North Texas. And The Oak Lawn Committee civic organization plays an active participation in maintaining the area’s unique identity.

If you’re considering visiting or moving to Oak Lawn, you’ll find it to be a lively, dynamic area with a rich history and a bright future. It stands as one of the most recognizable gay-friendly neighborhoods in the southern United States.

Bishop Arts District

The Bishop Arts District in Dallas’ Oak Cliff neighborhood, while not as historically entrenched in LGBTQA+ culture as the Oak Lawn area, has become increasingly welcoming and diverse over the years. The district’s inclusive atmosphere, artistic vibe, and emphasis on independent and locally owned businesses make it appealing to a wide range of individuals, including members of the LGBTQ+ community.

What’s happening in Bishop Arts? Bishop Arts does not have the concentration of LGBTQ+ bars and clubs that Oak Lawn does, but its nightlife is varied and inclusive. Several establishments are known for their welcoming atmosphere for all patrons, regardless of orientation or gender identity. Make sure to check out:

  • Oddfellows: With a motto of “Food for all”, Oddfellows dishes up seasonal, “farm fresh” comfort foods and an intriguing selection of beverages.
  • Hunky’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers: Hunky’s has other locations in Dallas, including Oak Lawn, and – as you may have guessed – serves excellent classic American burgers. There’s more to the menu than beef, including a veggie burger and salads, so don’t hesitate to drop by for lunch or dinner.
  • Barbara’s Pavillion: Located just a short distance from the main Bishop Arts District, on 325 Centre St. Barbara’s has been serving Dallas’ gay and lesbian community for over 50 years.

Bars in the area that aren’t explicitly gay but are welcoming include The Wild Detectives, a combination bar/bookstore and Ten Bells Tavern, a British-ish pub in the heart of Texas. And if you’re looking for fancy cocktails, check out Boulevardier.

In the mood for shopping? Have a look at Society, and the Bishop Street Market. And there are many others, look for the rainbow flags and stickers – you’ll find plenty of places to explore.

Safety and community support

The Bishop Arts District, like many urban areas, has pockets where crime is higher or lower. Most visitors and residents feel safe, especially during daylight hours and when frequenting the main commercial areas.Increased development and gentrification in Bishop Arts can have mixed effects, displacing long-term residents, and creating areas that are in transition. Websites like the Dallas Police Department’s public portal or community forums can provide recent crime statistics and reports about current safety perceptions.

If you’re considering a move here, talking to current residents can provide invaluable insights into day-to-day life and safety in the neighborhood. It’s definitely an area that is growing and developing, while trying to retain its reputation as a hub for creativity and independent businesses.

Deep Ellum

Long known for its great music and art scene, Deep Ellum is emerging as an LGBTQA+-friendly neighborhood. It’s young, vibrant, and embraces diversity.

What’s Happening in Deep Ellum?

While many businesses in Deep Ellum might not be exclusively LGBTQ+-oriented, the district’s alternative and artsy vibe tends to draw businesses and people who welcome folks from all walks of life. Some good places to check out include:

  • Stirr: A trendy restaurant and bar known for its rooftop views of the Dallas skyline.
  • Maracuja: A lively venue that occasionally hosts LGBTQA+-friendly events.
  • Twilite Lounge: This cozy New Orleans-inspired bar has a welcoming and inclusive vibe.

Safety and community support

Historically, Deep Ellum had a reputation for being a bit edgy, especially at night. However, significant efforts have been made to improve the district’s safety, especially with the influx of new businesses and developments in recent years. The community is, by and large, welcoming and there have been initiatives like increased lighting, security patrols, and collaborations with the Dallas Police Department to boost safety in the area.

As previously noted, websites like the Dallas Police Department’s public portal or community forums can provide recent crime statistics and reports about current safety perceptions. Do your research, the area is changing rapidly, and local folks are the best sources of current info.

Knox/Henderson

Knox/Henderson isn’t Dallas’s primary LGBTQ+ hub, but this district with its trendy shops, restaurants, and nightlife, is growing in its appeal to the LGBTQA+ community. Knox Street has upscale shops and eateries while Henderson Avenue is more laid-back with a diverse array of bars and restaurants.

What’s happening in Knox/Henderson?

Knox/Henderson might not have as explicitly LGBTQ+-oriented venues as Oak Lawn, many places are inclusive and welcoming. Check out:

  • Felix Culpa: This cocktail lounge on Henderson Avenue has a chic, modern feel and is known to be LGBTQ+-friendly.
  • The Old Monk: A staple on Henderson Avenue, this pub is welcoming to all patrons. It’s not exclusively LGBTQ+, but it’s known for its inclusive and friendly environment.
  • Barcadia: With retro arcade games and a casual bar setting, this spot is popular with a diverse crowd, including LGBTQ+ patrons.

Safety and community support

Knox/Henderson is generally considered safe and welcoming for LGBTQA+ folks. But as with any popular nightlife district, being vigilant and aware of your surroundings is crucial, especially during late hours. The Dallas Police Department often patrols popular nightlife areas such as Knox/Henderson, adding a layer of security. If you’re looking to make a move to this neighborhood, talk to locals and check the Dallas Police Department’s public portal website for details on the specific streets/area you’re considering.

Moving to Dallas?

Dallas’s commitment to embracing and celebrating diversity is evident in its gay-friendly neighborhoods. While the journey for equal rights continues, it’s heartening to witness the unity and acceptance that these neighborhoods foster. From Oak Lawn’s vibrant energy to the artsy allure of the Bishop Arts District, and the inclusive nature of neighborhoods like Deep Allum and Knox/Henderson, Dallas is not just a haven for the LGBTQA+ community, but a place where everyone can find a sense of belonging.

Dallas is a vibrant, inviting city with a little bit of something for everyone. A strong economy, world-class sports, a dynamic arts scene, and top-of-the-line schools are all contributing to its ascent. While it’s primarily known for being the home base for the Dallas Cowboys, the ninth-largest city in the United States offers a culture far beyond football alone: famous museums (Perot Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art – to name a couple) and jaw-dropping skyscrapers (Chase Tower and Bank of America Plaza).

Additionally, Dallas is no stranger to the affluent. It’s home to many high net-worth individuals: millionaires, ultramillionaires (individuals with net worths of over $30m+), and billionaires. In fact, according to WealthInsight, with 18 billionaires residing in the area, Dallas ranks as one of the top cities in the world for the most billionaires.

Other studies are showing a steady uptick in the number of high net-worth individuals flocking to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There has been a 3% year-over-year increase from 2021 to 2022.

So, where are they all living? In this article, we present the 6 Richest Neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas.

A Brief Overview: Dallas and Its Neighborhoods

With mouth-watering southern cuisines, luxury high-rises, blissful weather, and major investments from Fortune 500 companies, Dallas is taking off. It’s not just the super-rich who are moving there, either: The population has been steadily increasing by 1.5% per year over the past few years. It’s earned its spot as one of the fastest growing metro areas in the United States.

With the Dallas Arts District featuring world-class museums, the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, and the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, visitors and citizens alike have plenty to do downtown.

Despite all that it has to offer, the cost of living in Dallas is roughly in line with the national average. Its strong population growth and booming economy make it one of the most desirable places to settle down in the US.

The Six Most Expensive Neighborhoods in Dallas

Highland Park

Highland Park regularly ranks as the richest neighborhood in Dallas – and for good reason. Highland Park is an affluent and picturesque residential neighborhood approximately 3 miles north of the center of Dallas, so downtown is always in close proximity. It’s home to a remarkable assortment of luxury residences, spanning a variety of styles (primarily Mediterranean, Colonial, Georgian, and Tudors) built in the early 20th century – with no shortage of modern amenities and updates.

Its close proximity to popular attractions like the Dallas Arts District and its top-rated schools further contribute to the area’s desirability, making Highland Park a sought-after enclave known for its beauty, sophistication, and exclusivity.

Average Home Value: $2.5m

Westover Hills

Once ranking as the wealthiest location in Texas by per capita income, Westover Hills still ranks as one of the richest neighborhoods in Dallas today.

Westover Hills is an upscale residential community with about ~270 homes, situated in the western part of Fort Worth, Texas. Notable for its expansive estates, spacious lots, and luxurious homes, Westover Hills is characterized by its elegance. Westover Hills is home to The Tandy House, the last residential project of famous architect I.M. Pei, the mastermind behind The Louvre and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – among other notable architectural masterpieces.

Popular recreational destinations include Trinity Park, which offers a “Trinity Skyline Trail,” that has a great view of downtown Dallas – and popular restaurants include Olivella’s Pizza & Wine and Lucile’s.

Average Home Value: $2.1m

University Park

University Park is a well-established residential community situated just north of Highland Park. Primarily known for its close proximity to Southern Methodist University (SMU), the neighborhood offers a blend of upscale living and academic influence.

Plenty of sandwich shops, cafes, and fast-casual restaurants line the streets in and around Snider Plaza, which is just west of Southern Methodist. Amore Italian Bistro and Penne Pomodoro are among residents’ favorites.

With the Meadows Museum and the McFarlin Auditorium to top it off, there’s no shortage of things to do.

Average Home Value: $2m

Bluffview

Bluffview is an upscale, scenic neighborhood located in the northwestern part of Dallas. Bluffivew sits a bit further north than University Park and Highland Park but is still within a 10-minute drive to Dallas Love Field Airport.

True to its name, Bluffview was founded on a dairy bluff. Early citizens of the community made a conscious effort to protect the neighborhood’s gorgeous trees, creating irregularly-shaped lots compared to many of the rectangular lots we see today. Additionally, due to its raised topography, some exclusive homes in Bluffview still offer scenic views of the 60-foot rock bluff.

Average Home Value: $795k

Russwood Acres

Russwood Acres is an affluent residential community developed in 1962 by Harold Clark and Bill Smith. From the very beginning, the minimum lot size was established at half an acre and the minimum home was 3,400 square feet. Today, the average home in Russwood Acres is about 5,000 square feet. With no through streets, residents say that “you get a gated feel without the gates” and home styles are primarily pier-and-beam 1960’s Ranches, perfect for when your knees just can’t take the stairs anymore.

Russwood Acres offers a quiet retreat within the city. The neighborhood is characterized by large estate-style homes on spacious lots, which all contribute to a sense of privacy and exclusivity. It’s a go-to destination for those looking for a quieter place to settle down, but still close enough to the action of the city for anything you might desire.

Average Home Value: $885k

Lakewood

Lakewood is a historic and vibrant neighborhood located in the eastern part of Dallas, Texas. Less than fifteen minutes from downtown Dallas, Lakewood overlooks the jaw-dropping White Rock Lake, an 1,254 acre lake that was formed by damming White Rock Creek. Since it takes over two and half hours to walk around the perimeter, the lake offers biking and hiking opportunities galore. Lakewood is a great option for those who want an outdoorsy, suburban feel with all of the amenities of the city.

Tudor, Colonial, Spanish and French Eclectic are common home styles in the area, but with some new constructions popping up, there are a variety of styles available for would-be homeowners.

Average Home Value: $1.3m

Home to 1.3 million happy locals, this city still has space for new residents in its 200+ unique neighborhood. We’ve combed through the city and selected 5 neighborhoods that are up and coming in this city. This little neighborhood is just a few blocks east of Downtown, and if you’re familiar with the spot, you’ll probably already know that it was originally named Deep Elm. Dallas has a booming economy and is filled with a diverse population promoting cultural interactions. However, safety is an essential consideration when moving to a city. We will explore various aspects of crime and safety in Dallas by examining statistics and law enforcement controversies and identifying some of the safest neighborhoods.

Why listen to us? We’re Bellhop – movers in Dallas and across Texas and the nation. We’ve moved in folks all over Dallas, and that’s given us a unique perspective on what neighborhoods are safest in Dallas. Though we’ve also crunched the numbers on Dallas crime, because you can’t trust feelings alone.

Property Crime Rates in Dallas

According to Real Estate US News, property crime rates are higher in Dallas than the national average but relatively lower than in other major American cities. The violent crimes in 2021, there were 863.90 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Per year, this figure has reduced by 3% due to criminal activity crackdowns by the police. It’s important to note that while these statistics provide valuable insights into overall trends, individual experiences may vary depending on specific neighborhoods within Dallas.

Property crimes refer to offenses where individuals unlawfully interfere with the possessions or properties of others. In Dallas, various types of property crimes occur frequently. One common example is burglary, which involves unauthorized entry into a building to commit theft or any other felony. Burglaries can occur in residential areas as well as commercial establishments throughout Dallas.

Another prevalent property crime in Dallas is motor vehicle theft. This crime involves stealing automobiles without the owner’s consent. Car thefts often occur from public parking lots, streets, or even private driveways across different neighborhoods within the city.

Additionally, vandalism is another form of property crime commonly observed in Dallas. Vandalism includes acts such as graffiti on public and private properties without permission from the owners or authorities responsible for those spaces. These acts deface buildings and result in financial losses for property owners who must repair damages caused by vandals.

Moreover, arson represents an extreme property crime that occasionally occurs within Dallas. Arson refers to intentionally setting fire to structures or vehicles without authorization and usually results in significant damage to personal and commercial properties while endangering lives.

Lastly, shoplifting also falls under property crimes and remains a concern for businesses in Dallas’ retail sector. Shoplifting entails stealing items from retail stores without paying for them lawfully; this offense negatively impacts local businesses’ profits and may lead to increased costs being passed onto consumers.

Violent Crime Rate in Dallas

The Dallas Police Department gave statistics showing a decline in violent crime incidents in 2022. 2020 and 2021 experienced the highest number of victims and incidences. Murder incidents dropped to 207 in 2022 from 215 in 2021. The period between March and May experienced the highest crime rates compared to previous years, although there was a drop in the overall crime rate. A shooting incident at a concert in early April marked the high crime rate. Sixteen people died as a result.

Homicide Rate in Dallas

Measuring homicide rates typically involves analyzing the number of unlawful killings in a given population within a given area over a specified period. The homicide rate in Dallas as of July 2023 is still high. The crime rate is 45 per thousand residents, one of the highest in America. Dallas reached its highest murder rate in 2020, with a record of 83 slayings. In 2021, there was a 13% decline attributed to criminologist consultation. This decline was from 135 homicide victims in 2019.

The local authorities have tried to address the homicide issue through targeted interventions focused on improving public safety. Educational institutions, social service providers, community leaders, and law enforcement agencies must work together to emphasize prevention strategies.

Traffic Fatalities in Dallas

Dallas is number two in the highest traffic fatality rates in the US, with more than 14 deaths per 100,000 people. Jacksonville is the highest, with 15 deaths per 100,000 people. Two hundred twenty-eight people died in traffic in 2020. This is an 80% increase in the traffic fatality rate between 2010 and 2020. Pedestrians are involved in 36% of severe crashes. Half of the serious accidents in Dallas occur on 8% of the city’s streets. The Dallas City Council has adopted plans to reduce road accidents by 2030.

Law Enforcement in Dallas

The Dallas Police Department has over 300 sworn police officers in the eight precincts. A notable controversy involved in Dallas law enforcement is the 2016 shooting incident. This occurred during a peaceful protest against police violence. Micah Johnson ambushed and killed five officers on July 7, 2016, injuring several others. This event spiked discussions on police-community relations, mental health support, and gun control for individuals at risk of radicalization. There were calls for transparent policing practices and enhanced safety measures for enforcing the law and those involved in peaceful demonstrations.

Known for its sunshine, cowboys, concerts, and culture, Dallas is one of the top destinations for families and couples looking to rent or buy a home. Dallas is also among the top-25 least affordable cities, with median prices above most communities in the country. If you’re feeling priced out of Dallas City, we’ve compiled a list of affordable suburbs to consider. Why listen to us? As movers in Dallas as well as across Texas (and the nation), we spend a LOT of time all over Dallas. Not only have we crunched the numbers, we’ve seen the sights.

1. Grand Prairie

Located at the core of the DFW Metro Area, Grand Prairie is one of the most affordable up-and-coming neighborhoods in Dallas. The city is located in Dallas County and attracts many working professionals, with most people in their 30s. Twelve developments with more than 3,000 units are underway, and additional proposals have been made, so you can expect the suburb to keep growing. The scheduled new high-rise development in the DFW area will transform the quiet, tucked-away neighborhood into a prime location for the Grand Prairie Gateway, with walkable stores, parks, restaurants, and convention hotels. The first building will break ground in 2023 and is set to attract more people to the neighborhood.

Grand Prairie stretches from Irving (north) to Midlothian (south), spanning three counties and hosting around 190,000 people. The city was first established in 1860. The average home cost is $350,000, with classical 2- and 3-bedroom homes costing $200,000 to $300,000. Homes start as low as $160,000, with the high-end tapering at $900,000. Grand Prairie amenities include pool lakes, premium outlets, waterparks, theatres, and industrial parks. Major highways run through the prairie, so residents can commute easily throughout the metroplex. The Grand Prairie ISD has 41 schools with a student-teacher ratio of 16:1. In terms of safety, the city records lower crime rates than the national average, with more than half the population reporting feeling pretty safe.

Dallas is a big, vibrant and bustling city – the ninth-largest city in the country, and a major economic and cultural hub in the region. It has a strong and diverse economy, offering abundant job opportunities across various industries such as finance, technology, healthcare, and energy. The city has a strong entrepreneurial spirit, making it an attractive destination for career growth and business ventures.

And sports fans, Dallas’ hometown teams – the Dallas Cowboys (NFL), Dallas Mavericks (NBA), Texas Rangers (MLB), and Dallas Stars (NHL) – will keep you rooting all year long.

How do you find the best schools in Dallas?

When it comes to lists of the best schools in Dallas, you’ll find tons. How do you know which school is actually right for your child, though? There are a few things to look at. Initially, you’ll need to choose whether you want to send them to a public school or private school.

If it’s a public school, your options are a little more limited, as you can generally only sign your kids up at a school in your closest district. Once you have an idea of where you want your kids to go, consider the following:

  • What is their high-school graduation rate?
  • What is the math proficiency?
  • What is the English proficiency?
  • How does the school compare to others nearby?

How are public schools in Dallas?

Recent reports show that the state of Texas ranks #27 of the 50 states for its public school system. In 2021, Texas was rated a C+ for “early foundations” and a C for elementary school. The state has an 84% average graduation rate (with some reports showing as high as 90%).

How does Dallas stack up? The graduation rate for Dallas seniors is 82.8%. That means fewer students graduate from high school in Dallas than in other parts of Texas on average. It is suggested that one area Dallas public schools could improve in is helping kids get ready for college.

Approximately 47% of students are proficient in math in the Dallas ISD School District, with 40% proficient in reading. Nonetheless, while these numbers are lower than the state average, there are still some great schools in Dallas that are worth considering for your child.

Some of these schools are in the suburbs, which usually have fewer students working with teachers, meaning that teachers can provide your child more support if and when needed.

In my time in the district, I have experienced many years of good education. The teachers are experts in their subjects and have excellently prepared me for STAAR testing, EOC’s, etc.

So, when you’re thinking about a place to move to and send your kids to in Dallas, consider other people’s experiences. Make sure the suburban school has the classes, sports, clubs, and extracurricular activities that your child enjoys so that they get the most out of their school experience. Also, make sure the suburb is a place you want to live!

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

Three Dallas suburbs with top-rated school systems are Highland Park, University Park, and Coppell. First up is Highland Park, which is located between Downtown Dallas and University Park. About 9,143 people live in this suburb, which is known for being one of Texas’s best suburbs for schools.

The Park Cities are clean, child-friendly and organized.” They also mention, “Residents of the community send their children to school at one of the 5 elementary schools that fed into HP Middle School and HP High School. This close-knit community is full of spirit, love, and support!

Finally, there’s Coppell. Not only is it a highly rated suburb when it comes to schools, but it’s also called the top suburb to live in if you’re thinking about moving to the Dallas area. The schools are an A+. Housing, family-friendliness, and diversity also get As.
