A Little About Charlotte and its Neighborhoods

Charlotte is the full package. The city offers plenty of entertainment options for sports and racing fans (NFL, NBA, NASCAR – you name it) and outdoor destinations (mountains, nearby beaches, lakes, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center). It features charming residential areas and boasts of a booming financial sector and tech industry. And it’s home to several art museums and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, all the while hosting hopping city-wide parties and annual cultural festivals.

In Charlotte, you’ll easily find some of the best dining and drinking destinations in the country. One highly-renowned and can’t-miss spot in the city is chef Rocco Whalen’s Fahrenheit, which has been featured by several local and national magazines and newspapers.

Then, on top of it all, Charlotte dishes out its killer North Carolina Barbecue. And with bellies full, we submissively bow to the Queen City, thanking her majesty for her delicious gifts.

With all these perks, Charlotte has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. But Charlotte still maintains a lower cost of living compared to the national average. Even while housing prices are billowing with plenty of new residents, Charlotte’s 199 neighborhoods offer plenty of diversity in affordability, culture, and amenities. Below, we’ll zoom in and take a closer look at five up-and-coming neighborhoods in this royal city. 

UPTOWN

Charlotte’s downtown is so up and coming, they call it Uptown. While tons of people do live here (typically in luxury condos and apartments), it’s largely full of high rises and skyscrapers typical of all big city centers. This central area of Charlotte is divided into four wards, all of which blend some of the city’s best arts, culture, history, sports, and entertainment. 

What’s Happening in Uptown

Charlotte’s Uptown packs in the restaurants, rooftop bars, and modern taprooms. Get a wide sampling of the area’s food and drink at the 7th Street Public Market. Visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame. For a taste of the city’s arts and culture, spend a day at the Harvey B. Grantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture, The Mint Museum, or The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.

For nightlife spots, check out The Imperial jazz and cocktail lounge, the EpiCentre for stand-up comedy and dancing or AvidXchange Music Factory for live shows.

Located on the east side of Uptown, Plaza Midwood (or just “plaza” as it’s locally known) has seen some major changes in the past decade. Housing prices have risen drastically, and its wide, walkable roads have filled up with hip bars and new restaurants. 

Plaza emits a sort of grungy, local feel and draws lots of young professionals, some families, and several empty nesters who want a nice home, a small yard, and a driveway that’ll keep their Mini Coopers off the street. Located close to US-74 and I-277, Plaza is a top pick for locals needing to commute into the city center. 

What’s Happening in Plaza-Midwood

Plaza is home to several breweries – our favorite local spot is Resident Culture which shows off quirky murals in their taproom and creative can-art. For some great brunch, stop by Zada Janes. Midwood Smokehouse serves bbq worthy of a visit from former President Obama. The nearby Central Avenue is lined with antique shops and eccentric eateries. And Veterans Park offers close to 20 acres of green space for neighborhood get-togethers and family picnics.

Schools in the area include Elizabeth Traditional Elementary, Piedmont Open Middle School, and Cato Middle College High School among others.

Homes in Plaza Midwood

NODA

Short for “North Davidson,” NoDa is the no-brainer pick for hipsters in the city. It continues to develop but has maintained an authentic, urban vibe – even more so than Plaza. What’s Happening in NoDa

NoDa will stack your weeknights and weekends with its great neighborhood entertainment spots, eateries, and drinkeries. Grab a fish taco at Cabo. Order a pint at one of our favorite Charlotte breweries – NoDa Brewing. Watch an indie punk band at The Evening Muse. Or explore this neighborhood’s unique shops along North Davidson and 36th streets. If you’re looking for some green space, North Charlotte Park is your best bet. It sits right in the center of the neighborhood and a 3-acre grassy lawn, basketball court, picnic area, playground, and walking trail.

Homes in NoDa

WEST SIDE

West Side encompasses some smaller neighborhoods like Biddleville, Smallwood, and Wesley Heights. But as a whole, this area of Charlotte is developing rapidly. These neighborhoods were once segregated and divided. But today, West Side has seen a recovery and has become a desirable place to live with arguably the highest ethnic and cultural diversity in the city. 

New and old residents live side-by-side. Long-term locals wave from the porches of their old shotgun homes to young professionals who have recently moved to the area. Neighbors gather for chili cook-offs and neighborhood picnics. And the Biddleville-Smallwood Community Organization continues to build unity between these once separated neighborhoods. 

What’s Happening in West Side

West Side is home to several bars and breweries, including Blue Blaze Brewery that features an outdoorsy-hiker kind of feel. Try their S’mores Blonde Ale, brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, and biscuit malt. Charlotte’s 37 mile-long greenway runs through the West Side, and the area is just minutes from Charlotte’s bustling Uptown. And the neighborhood is home to Johnson C Smith University, an HBCU that plays schools like Morehouse and Spelman.

Data from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shows that while overall crime rates have seen a recent dip in the area, they still shadow over the national average.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how crime in Charlotte compares to other cities and give you a list of the safest places to stay.

Here’s what you need to know:

Rate of Property Crime in Charlotte

In Charlotte, property crimes, including burglary and vehicle theft, are above the national average, registering 32.12 cases per 1,000 residents. The city noted an uptick in cases from 15,475 in 2022 to 17,873, ranking it at 53.6 in the crime indices range in 2023.

Although daunting, especially compared to figures from New York and the U.S. (24.9 and 35.4, respectively), these stats are not being ignored. City authorities are on their toes, enhancing preventive measures and nurturing community bonds.

The focus? To ensure that Charlotte becomes safer and friendlier for everyone who calls it or might call it home.

Rate of violent crime in Charlotte

Turning attention to violent crime—which covers major offenses such as homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault—we find that Charlotte shows a figure of roughly 4.5 occurrences per 1,000 residents.

This promising downward trend is good news for Charlotte regarding violent crimes, which decreased from 3,689 offenses in 2022 to 3,406 in 2023. However, the city’s crime index of 34.3 is still higher than New York’s 28.2 and the national average of 22.7.

While bearing in mind that the crime index scale ranges from 1 (low crime) to 100 (high crime), Charlotte’s rating reflects its room for improvement.

Homicide rate in Charlotte

In a promising turn of events, Charlotte’s homicide rate dropped from 53 in 2022 to 45 in 2023, with 27 of those unfortunate incidents involving firearms. Meanwhile, overall gun-related crime victims saw a slight decrease of around 4%, bringing the number to 2,359 so far in 2023.

A testament to the city’s commitment towards a safer future, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confiscated over 800 guns in the first quarter of 2023 alone. The continued efforts in making the streets safer and lowering these tragic figures is a priority, making every effort to ensure that every resident of Charlotte can live a life free of fear.

Rate of traffic fatalities in Charlotte

In Charlotte, traffic fatalities average 75 deaths yearly, while pedestrians and cyclists face their share of risks. Between 2018 and 2022, the city saw a noticeable decline of 55% in severe injuries or fatalities involving pedestrians and bicyclists, with 47 cases in 2018 dropping to 30 in 2020. Remarkably, about 1,900 individuals walked away from such incidents in 2020 with either minor or no injuries.

Compared to the US national averages, Charlotte fares better, as the country records approximately 6,000 pedestrian and 850 cyclist deaths annually. Among major American cities, Los Angeles experiences the highest number of pedestrian fatalities at 116, followed by New York (90), Houston (76), and Phoenix (73).

Moving to Charlotte vs. Raleigh

Here’s everything you need to know about Charlotte vs. Raleigh before you make your move: 

Schools

North Carolina is known for its top-rated education system, with the average high-school graduation rate being 86% for the most recent school year. Charlotte has a lower graduation rate at 81%, though some schools, such as Ardrey Kell High School, exceed the state average, flaunting an impressive 98% graduation rate. 

Raleigh’s school graduation rate is higher than Charlotte’s graduation rate but lower than the state average, coming in at 85%. Like Charlotte, Raleigh also has many schools that exceed the city and state average, though, including Raleigh Charter High School, which has a graduation rate of above 95%. (Psst… It’s also been voted the second-best charter high school in all of the U.S.)

When it comes to schooling, another thing you might look at is the math and reading proficiency levels of the students. The math proficiency in Charlotte is the same as the statewide average (48%), while the reading proficiency is just below the state’s average at 50%. 

Raleigh’s math proficiency is well above the state average at 58%. The same goes for reading (62%–to be exact). Raleigh schools are known for being among the best high schools in the state of North Carolina. Charlotte schools are also in the top half of North Carolina public high schools but lower than Raleigh when it comes to graduation rates, as well as math and reading proficiency levels.

Transportation

Traffic can get bad in Charlotte and Raleigh, considering they’re both major cities. The key is to avoid rush hour if at all possible, which is in the morning (about 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.) and late afternoon (4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.). 

If you prefer not to be behind the wheel but still have to commute during those hours, consider public transportation. Charlotte has various options, including by bus or light rail. Raleigh also covers your bases (bus, train, shuttle, etc.). There are two airports in Charlotte (Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Concord Regional Airport) and one airport in Raleigh (Raleigh Durham International Airport), with multiple other airports nearby. 

Charlotte is not considered the most bike-friendly city, though there are many neighborhoods and trails to accommodate bikers and pedestrians. Raleigh, on the other hand, has been called the “#114 best biking city in America” as of 2021. 

Jobs and economy

Both Charlotte and Raleigh are known for strong job growth and economies. Approximately 19,900 jobs popped up in Charlotte in the second quarter of 2022 alone, according to one report. Some of the top industries in the area are government, manufacturing, trade, finance, education, health services, and business services.

What does Raleigh look like in terms of job growth? It has been called “the third-hottest job market in the country.” It’s also home to the famous Research Triangle, which has 300+ businesses operating out of it (e.g., government, education, nonprofit organizations, and science and tech). Some other notable industries in the region include manufacturing, trade, construction, and finance. 

Entertainment

When it comes to Charlotte vs. Raleigh for nightlife, both cities rate well. However, locals generally prefer Charlotte nightlife, as there are more things to do. Whether you enjoy nightclubs, restaurants, or live music, both cities have you covered. (Charlotte also has sports, being home to the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, and more.)

Regarding the dating scene, one local says, “Raleigh is smaller and all the bars are right next to a university. I got tired of everyone being fresh out of college that I would meet. I know there are a lot of professionals there but they don’t come out, mostly everyone is married and having kids by 25. People in Charlotte are more career focused and so for late 20s / 30s there are more dating options.”

Outdoors

Charlotte has everything in close proximity when it comes to the outdoors. It’s only 20 miles from Lake Norman, North Carolina’s biggest man-made lake, which consists of a whopping 520 miles of shoreline. You can go there to fish, boat, or hike with your friends and family. 

Another great thing about Charlotte is that it’s only about a four-hour drive to the ocean, specifically Ocean Isle Beach. That means that you can either hang out lakeside or oceanside, depending on what suits your fancy.

You can also head to the mountains if that’s more of your vibe. Some of the nearby mountain ranges include Morrow Mountain State Park, South Mountains, and Crowders Mountain State Park. You can also get to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in just under five hours.

Now, if you have kids or love a good picnic, you’re probably wondering about the parks. Charlotte has various parks, including Freedom Park, Romare Bearden Park, McDowell Nature Center and Preserve, and The Green. 

Like Charlotte, Raleigh is known for being fun and outdoorsy. The city is a stomping ground for people of all ages because of the beautiful parks, lakes, and hiking trails. It only takes three hours or so to get to the mountains and two hours to get to the beach, with must-visit beaches to include Carolina Beach, Atlantic Beach, Wrightsville Beach, and Kure Beach. According to the city’s website, it’s “one of the fastest growing communities in North Carolina” and is conveniently near many places of employment in Ballantyne, Center City Charlotte, and even South Charlotte. 

That means that if you’re moving to Charlotte with kids, and you want a good job while you’re at it (someone has to pay for the Pizza Fridays, after all!), Marvin could be right for you. And as we hinted at above, it rates highly in terms of education.

Belmont’s tree-lined streets are incredibly charming. Its white sidewalks line manicured lawns. The area draws many young as well as established families who settle down in one of this neighborhood’s pretty homes.

Our favorite recent addition to the neighborhood is Legion Brewing’s second location. While it still hints at the quirky, artsy vibes of its first taproom, Legion’s new spot in South Park boasts towering ceilings, a circular bar, and a sun-drenched seating area.

Myers Park
