The Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC can be a great place to live if you’re looking for a family-friendly neighborhood in the greater Washington, DC area (or the DMV, as it’s often known.) Southern Maryland’s schools are a particularly big draw for new residents with kids in tow.

How to Find the Best Schools in Southern Maryland

Finding the best schools in southern Maryland can take time, but here are some things to consider:

  • What are the school districts in your new area and what kind of ratings do they earn from independent agencies?
  • What are the districts’ high school graduation rates?
  • What are the local math and reading proficiency scores?
  • How do former students describe their experiences, and are there a lot of reviews online?

With these as our guidelines, let’s take a deeper dive into the schools southern Maryland has to offer.

What Private Schools Are in Southern Maryland?

The Maryland suburbs of Washington have a lot of highly rated private schools. Here, we’ve broken them down by county, covering the areas of Prince George’s County, Montgomery County and Howard County. Schools are ranked via a combination of test scores, graduation rates and online student feedback. Affordability can be hard to include in these ratings, since most private schools prefer not to disclose their pricing online, and most will offer sliding rates for different families based on merit and need.

Top Private Schools in Prince George’s County

DeMatha Catholic High School, Hyattsville, MD

DeMatha Catholic High School offers grades 9-12 and earns stellar grades from online reviewers. In 2023, the school claims to have 813 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 12:1.

Belair Baptist Christian Academy, Bowie, MD

Belair Baptist Christian Academy offers private religious education to children of all faith backgrounds in a K-12 system. The school generally lacks afterschool programs, but it is in a partnership with a larger local Christian private network that’s nationally ranked for various sports. Belair is a very small school, with just 55 students and a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

New Hope Academy, Hyattsville, MD

New Hope Academy offers preschool for potty-trained children, in addition to its regular K-12 program. The school has 196 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 7:1. Over 80% of its graduates go on to a four-year college, and financial aid is available for the approximately $14,000 annual tuition.

Top Private Schools in Montgomery County

Holton-Arms School, Bethesda, MD

Holton-Arms School offers grades 3-12 for its 665 students. It boasts a low student-to-teacher ratio of 6:1 and enjoys nearly universally positive reviews from families and former students who post their experiences online.

Landon School, Bethesda, MD

Landon School offers grades 3-12 and has a 700-student body. The student-to-teacher ratio is just 5:1, and it gets A and A+ ratings from several online education rating sources, as well as a 4.5/5 star rating that’s fairly stable across different review sites.

Georgetown Preparatory School, North Bethesda, MD

Georgetown Preparatory School is a Catholic boys’ boarding school that earns universally high marks for academics, clubs, college prep and teacher performance. Fees include boarding and may exceed $68,000 a year, though 28% of students receive financial aid.

Top Private Schools in Howard County

Glenelg Country School, Ellicott City, MD

Glenleg Country School offers pre-K and K-12 on a campus with 761 students and a 7:1 student-to-teacher ratio. The school is set somewhat back into the country, with wide open lands around the campus and a quaint, rustic atmosphere.

Chapelgate Christian Academy, Marriottsville, MD

Chapelgate Christian Academy has 383 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 12:1. The school offers K-12, and promotes its highly individual approach to students’ needs.

Fusion Academy Columbia, Columbia, MD

Fusion Academy Columbia offers grades 6-12 for its 68 students. It boasts a low 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, and emphasizes college prep in its materials and curriculum.

Public Schools in Southern Maryland

If private school isn’t part of your family’s plan, you’re not out of luck. The Maryland suburbs around the capital offer some highly regarded public schools that earn high marks at every level, from elementary through high school. Here are some of the top-rated public schools in the Maryland counties closest to the District of Columbia.

How Are Schools in Prince George’s County, Maryland?

Prince George’s County public schools are unique in the United States for having basically 100% minority enrollment. Its 209 schools serve 131,646 students, 49% of whom are considered economically disadvantaged. The high school graduation rate is over 80%, and 98% of the district’s teachers are certified.

How Are Schools in Montgomery County, Maryland?

xThe 209 campuses in Montgomery County serve 160,564 students, 70% of whom are minority listed. About 28% of the students’ families are economically disadvantaged. Montgomery County schools maintain a 14:1 student-to-teacher ratio and an 89% graduation rate.

How Are Schools in Howard County, Maryland?

Schools in Howard County serve 57,293 students on 77 campuses. Minority enrollment is 70%, and 14% are economically disadvantaged. Over 90% of students graduate from the 12th grade, and 48% are considered college ready.

What Colleges and Universities Are in Southern Maryland?

For many people, education doesn’t stop at the 12th grade. More and more families are choosing to support their recently graduated students at home, or to encourage their adult kids to look for schools close enough to live at home or commute fairly easily back and forth from campus. That makes the local university scene more important than it would have been in the past, when recent graduates would routinely travel across the country to attend school out of state, or at least far from the home where they grew up.

Southern Maryland has several colleges and universities that earn top marks for quality of education, merit-based access and admissions, cost and alumni support for graduates. Post-secondary education can be evaluated in different ways, largely depending on what you hope to get out of it and how far you plan to go in your academic career. A good school for undergrads, for instance, might be less ideal for graduate school, just as a good school for the humanities might be ranked relatively low for the sciences.

Here, we’ve listed some of the best colleges and universities in Southern Maryland with an eye toward balancing quality factors and finding desirable schools for your kids to apply to. We’ve also gone a little outside the immediate area to include the more prestigious schools in the region, with the idea that new students can reach the campus without driving too far from home.

Parents: are you considering a move to Los Angeles, California? You’ve probably done your research on the City of Angels if so. You know the city is home to people from 140 countries speaking 224+ languages, making it a cultural melting pot.

The city, which is loved for its diversity, is also admired by people all around the globe for its beautiful terrain. You can find everything from mountains to the ocean, making the city as close to perfect as it gets–especially if you enjoy doing things outdoors with your kiddos.

Now, we get why you’d want to relocate to L.A. If you have kids, it’s not a hard sell considering the endless amount of things to do, the scenery, the diversity, and so on. (You see where we’re going with this.)

So, how about the schools? What are the best schools in Los Angeles, and how do you siphon through all of the schools in Metro L.A.? Let’s talk about it!

los angeles neighborhoods

How do you find the best schools in Los Angeles?

The Greater Los Angeles area includes five counties: Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, Orange County, and Ventura County. As you can imagine, this comes with a massive amount of schools. The city of Los Angeles, which is located in Los Angeles County, has 1,803 schools just by itself.

Now, when it comes to schools, there are many things to think about. We recommend figuring out the answers to these questions as you search for the best schools in Los Angeles to make sure you’ll be happy with where you end up sending your kids:

  • Would a public or private school be better for your child?
  • What is the high-school graduation rate?
  • What is the proficiency level for math and reading?
  • What are the schools’ overall ratings?

Keep reading to find out more about public schools in L.A.

How are public schools in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles public schools are above average in many areas, from teachers to classes and college prep. Students have the option to take honors and advanced placement (AP) classes at many schools, helping make their transcripts look even better as they apply to colleges in their high school years.

As of the most recent school year, the average high-school graduation rate in the state of California is 85%. The graduation rate in Los Angeles depends on the school district. For instance, the Los Angeles Unified School District’s graduation rate is 80%. Of course, there are many schools with above-average graduation rates (e.g., Amador Valley High School and Bonita High School, which come in at above 99%).

The math proficiency in the Los Angeles Unified School District is 29%, and the reading proficiency is 54%, which is in the upper half of Los Angeles public schools.

While the graduation rate in this district is below the state average, the math and reading proficiency levels are actually comparable. Approximately 49% of students are reading proficient in California, and 34% are proficient in math in California public schools as a whole.

All in all, you can find many incredible schools in Los Angeles, with many of the best options in the suburbs. To figure out which school is right for your kids, it’s not a bad idea to look into different suburbs and see which part of the city piques your interest and has the amenities you want. Then, take a look at the graduation rate, reading and math proficiency levels, sports programs, classes, and extracurricular activities at the schools in the area. That will give you a great idea about which schools will work out for your kids.

What private schools are in Los Angeles?

Some of the top private high schools in Los Angeles include:

Of course, that’s not all your options for private schools in L.A. Here are some more of the best private schools in Los Angeles, which have high ratings and come with great opportunities for kids of all ages:

What are suburban L.A. schools like?

The Los Angeles suburbs extend 20 miles from the city or more. They often have their own school districts, giving you even more options for potential schools. All in all, the L.A. suburbs have top-rated schools with low student-to-teacher ratios, AP classes, honors classes, an abundance of sports and other extracurriculars, and support to help kids get ready for college.

The thing to remember, though, is that not all suburbs are the same. Most suburbs of Los Angeles are rated well for schools, but the key to finding the right suburb for your kids to go to school in is to research first about what programs they have that your kids would enjoy (plus whether you could see yourself living there). Narrowing down the suburb before committing to a house is just efficient if you have kids.

Artesia is a Los Angeles suburb that has top-rated schools. One person who lives there says, “Artesia is a family-friendly and diverse community, where your introduced by numerous but familiar faces. Once you step foot, you are introduced by a variety of cultures from Filipino to Indian. There are no limitations to snacking because Artesia has it all.”

They go on to say, “I’ve grown up in Artesia all of my life, so I know the ins and outs of what goes on around here, and I can guarantee I have never felt more safe than my stay at Artesia. The school distract is open to all families and provides great education to our youth. I am proud to be part of this community!”

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

Considering the sheer size of Los Angeles, you can imagine the number of schools there are in the suburbs. Some of the best suburbs for schools in L.A. are La Cañada Flintridge, Palos Verdes Estates, South Pasadena, Rolling Hills Estates, and San Marino. So, let’s chat about them!

First up is La Cañada Flintridge. It’s been rated the top suburb to raise kids in the entire state of California. It’s safe and has great public schools, as well as a variety of activities for families. Some popular things to do in this city of 20,613 people are visiting the Mayors’ Discovery Park, checking out the Kidspace Children’s Museum, or going to Descanso Gardens. The city doesn’t have a ton of nightlife, but it has quite a few outdoor and family-friendly activities.

The next suburb on our list is Palos Verdes Estates, which is the oldest city on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This city is about as beautiful as it gets, situated right on the coast with stunning views of the ocean. Roughly 13,403 people call this city home. It has impressive schools, and while it doesn’t have a ton of amenities aside from shopping, it offers an exclusive lifestyle for families who get the chance to live there.

South Pasadena is another one of L.A.’s best suburbs if you have kids. About 26,837 people live there, enjoying the A-rated schools. Of South Pasadena, one resident says, “South Pasadena is a diverse place with many wholesome folks. The schools here are excellent and are tailored to help your kids succeed, all while promoting 4 year colleges by making them easily accessible. You couldn’t be safer if you lived here. People here are very ecologically friendly, with the promotion of tree-planting and healthy living. Traveling is easy with the metro line.

Rolling Hills Estates is yet another top suburb in the city of Los Angeles. This city, which is extremely kid friendly, has approximately 8,305 residents. From places to eat to stores and boutiques to shop at, you’ll find a little of everything in Rolling Hills Estates. The schools and diversity both get As.

Last but not least on our list is San Marino. The residents of this city are generally well off, and the housing prices show it, being multi-million dollars on average. About 12,620 people live in San Marino, where the public schools get an A+. Just keep in mind that while there are great schools in the area, the amenities are lacking a bit. So, if you like to do things with your kids and stay busy, you’ll have to commute.

What are the best school districts in Los Angeles?

Here are some of the top school districts in L.A.:

La Cañada Unified School District

This school district comes in at the top, being L.A.’s #1 school district. Nearly everything gets an A there, including academics, teachers, and college prep. There are 3,988 students in this school district between grades K-12. The reading proficiency is 89%, and the math proficiency is 85%.

San Marino Unified School District

San Marino is the second-best school district in L.A. Like La Cañada, it scores an A on almost all counts. It also offers AP classes and gifted programs for students interested in challenging themselves. The reading proficiency level is 88%, and the math proficiency level is 87% at this school, which has 2,821 students between grades K-12.

Arcadia Unified School District

Arcadia Unified School District is the third best in the City of Angels, with A-rated classes, teachers, administration, clubs, activities, and more. Roughly 8,946 kids go to school there between grades K-12. The math and reading proficiency levels are 75% and 77%.

Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District

The student population is 10,503 between grades K-12 at Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, L.A.’s #4 school district. Virtually everything scores an A there, aside from clubs and activities, which still get a B+ (pretty good if you ask us). The math proficiency is 72%, and the reading proficiency is 76%.

Laguna Beach Unified School District

Coming in at the #5 spot for the best school districts in Los Angeles is Laguna Beach Unified School District. (It’s also Orange County’s top school district.) There are about 2,634 students there between grades K-12, with a 78% math proficiency and 83% reading proficiency. College prep, teachers, academics, and administration all get As. You can’t go wrong with that!

Considering a move to Detroit?

Figuring out where your kids are going to go to school is always a tricky consideration when looking at a move. There are 107 public schools in the Detroit Public Schools Community District, and while Detroit has had a inspiring resurgence, its school system’s track record is still spotty, at best.

We’re here to help you navigate the best Detroit schools for your children. In this blog, we’ll cover public schools, private schools, and more to help you choose a nice school and school district for your children. “

Let’s get started! Shall we?

A bit about Detroit Public Schools

As of 2021, the public schools in Detroit are still struggling in terms of academic performance and resources. According to the Michigan Department of Education, Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) had a 2021 graduation rate of 76.1%, which is an improvement from previous years but still lower than the statewide average. In terms of academic achievement, DPSCD schools continue to perform below the state average on standardized tests.

Additionally, DPSCD has faced challenges with funding and resources, including crumbling infrastructure, teacher shortages, and low teacher salaries. In recent years, the district has made efforts to address these issues, including passing a $500 million bond to fund facility improvements and increasing teacher pay. However, there is still a long way to go to ensure that all Detroit students have access to high-quality education.

It’s worth noting that there are some high-performing public schools and charter schools in Detroit, but they tend to be concentrated in certain areas and may not be accessible to all students. Families looking for quality education options in Detroit may also consider private or parochial schools, or explore school choice options such as inter-district or charter school transfers.

What are suburban Seattle, WA schools like?

Like many cities, Seattle has both an urban and suburban area. Based on rankings by Niche, schools in the suburbs tend to rank higher than urban schools. For example, public schools in the city of Seattle have an A- rating, while public schools in Yarrow Point (a suburb of Seattle) have an A+ rating.

One reason why suburban schools may score higher is finances. Residents in Yarrow Point have a higher median household income than residents in Seattle and pay more in property taxes, part of which go towards school funding. In addition to wanting higher-ranking schools, many people are drawn to suburban areas due to their lower crime rates. On the downside, suburban areas typically have less diversity than urban regions.

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

Now that you know the appeal of suburban schools, you might be thinking: which suburbs near Seattle have the best school systems? While there’s no shortage of good options, the most recommended areas include Yarrow Point, Mercer Island and Clyde Hill.

Let’s start with Yarrow Point. As mentioned above, it has an A+ rating for its public schools and is known for low crime rates. For overall living, Niche gives it an A+ rating and notes that the area is especially good for families. So, apart from its high-quality school system, what makes it such a great place to live? For starters, it offers a quiet, rural feel, which is a strong contrast to the busy vibe of urban cities. In total, the region has fewer than 1,500 residents. However, despite the rural location, there’s still plenty of entertainment (including restaurants and parks).

Next on our list is Clyde Hill. This quaint suburb, which is home to over 3,000 residents, gets an A+ for its public schools and another A+ for general living. Like many suburbs, it could have more diversity — it earns a B in this category. Overall, Clyde Hill shares many similarities with Yarrow Point, down to the quiet, rural atmosphere.

Finally, let’s wrap this list up with Mercer Island. As the name suggests, it’s an island and is connected to Seattle through a bridge. Like Yarrow Point and Clyde Hill, Mercer Island has an overall A+ rating, as well as an A+ rating for its public schools. However, with a population of over 25,000, it’s a much larger area than the other suburbs. It strikes a balance between rural and urban, offering the peace and quiet of a rural atmosphere along with the hustle and entertainment of urban regions. One resident says, “Mercer Island has amazing weather, small beaches, beautiful houses, pretty nice public schools, short commute times, and friendly people.”

What are the best school districts in Seattle, WA?

The most well-known school district in Seattle is Seattle Public Schools. Catering to the majority of public school students in the city of Seattle, it has a 16:1 student-to-teacher ratio, above-average math and reading proficiency levels and an overall A- public school rating. However, there are other school districts in the Seattle metropolitan area that rank higher.

One of the highest ranked districts in this area is the suburban Mercer Island School District. While it has a higher student-to-teacher ratio than Seattle at 18:1, it fares better when it comes to math and reading (with 83% and 87% of students scoring at or above the proficiency levels, respectively). It earns an A+ in academics, college prep and teachers, as well as an overall A+ for public schools.

Finally, we have Bellevue School District, a highly rated city district that has over 20,000 students. 73% of students are proficient in math, while 79% are proficient in reading. In addition to impressive test scores, the district earns an A- in clubs and activities, an A- in diversity and an A+ overall.

You might know Orlando as the home of Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld–basically making it every kid’s dream (and the dream of every child at heart). What you may not realize, though, is that while Orlando makes a great vacay spot, it’s also a great place to move your family to, no matter the ages of your kiddos.

In case the move to Orlando starts sounding sweeter and sweeter, we’re going to cover one of every parent’s frequently asked questions, “What are the best schools in Orlando?” Let’s jump right in!

Kids learning with a teacher

How do you find the best schools in Orlando?

As with any major city, Orlando has both public and private school systems. There are 726 schools throughout the city, including 179 public school districts. In other words, you have options–lots of options–for schools between grades PK and K-12.

One of the ways to figure out which school is best is to figure out if public or private school is better for you. For public school, you often are limited to where exactly your kids can go based on your physical address. Private schools have more choices that way, but it comes with a sometimes hefty price tag.

Here are some other questions to ask yourself in the search for the best schools in Orlando, FL:

  • How does the high-school graduation rate compare to the state average?
  • What are the math and reading proficiencies?
  • How are the classes and teachers?

Now, let’s chat about the public school systems here in beautiful Orlando.

How are public schools in Orlando?

According to Public School Review, roughly 88% of students in grades K-12 attend public schools in Orlando, FL, which is just above the average in the state of Florida (87%).

When it comes down to it, the public schools rank in the lower half of public schools in the state. However, that isn’t to say there aren’t amazing schools with reading and math proficiency levels and graduation rates that soar high above the rest of Florida public schools.

Recent numbers show that Florida’s high-school graduation rate is 88%. Orlando actually comes in higher than this, with the graduation rate being 89%

How are students doing in Orlando in math and reading? The math proficiency in this city is 54%, and the reading proficiency is 52%. For reference, the state’s average comes in at 59% for math and 56% for reading.

If your child goes to school in the Orlando suburbs, they’re in for a treat. There are many incredible opportunities there for elementary, middle, and high school students. Whether your child is interested in sports, a rigorous academic program, or exciting clubs and activities, many suburban schools will have those options.

Suburban schools are generally rated well in terms of classes, teachers, and safety, so you’ll feel good knowing that your child has the best of everything if you choose that route. One of the things that make suburban schools so great is the low student-to-teacher ratio, which can make it easier for some children to learn.

Just look at Osceola County School for the Arts in Kissimmee, an Orlando suburb, as an example. One student says, “The Osceola County School for the Arts (OCSA) is a school full of possibilities. The administration and teachers are amazing and supportive. It is the perfect setting for students aspiring to become artists. The multiple majors, clubs, events, etc. present opportunities that are unmatched.

And if your child is interested in a suburban school that offers more for kids outside of the arts, don’t worry. There are plenty of choices in the suburbs that do just that!

Then, there’s Chuluota. This city has an impressive title as the top spot to purchase a home in all of Orlando. The public schools, housing, diversity, and kid friendliness all get As in Chuluota, which has roughly 1,939 residents

Finally, we have Heathrow (no, not the airport in London). As the top area to move to in Seminole County, this suburb offers something for everyone, from kids to adults. One resident says of this suburb, which has a population of 6,898 people, “Heathrow is a very nice community I love the elementary schools and the community feel. Welcome to Tampa, Florida! It’s the third-biggest city in the state, situated on the beautiful Florida west coast. Generally, when you think about Florida, you probably think of sandy beaches, warm weather, and excitement. However, what you may not realize is the quality of the schools.

Today, we’re going to share the best schools in Tampa to help you decide which school is the right fit for your kids before you make your big move. Let’s get right into it!

How do you find the best schools in Tampa?

The Tampa Bay area is massive, containing 3.1 million residents. There are 632 schools in Tampa in total. That means that if you’re after a quality school that’s going to challenge your kids and cultivate a great environment for learning, you’re sure to find it somewhere in this Florida city.

Searching for the best schools in Tampa starts with a few key questions:

  • Do you prefer public or private schools?
  • What are the reading and math proficiency levels?

  • How do the public schools rate overall?

To learn more about the schools in Tampa, read on!

Kids learning in School

How are public schools in Tampa?

While there are many highly rated schools in Tampa, the schools as a whole rank in the lower half of public schools throughout the state. Roughly 53% of students in public schools are reading proficient, which is slightly below the rest of the state (56%). About 54% of students are math proficient, which is also below Florida’s average (59%).

How about the high-school graduation rate? Tampa’s graduation rate is 85%. That’s 3% lower than Florida as a whole, which has a graduation rate of 88%. (Note: these values are for public schools only.)

If you want to find the best of the best public schools, consider narrowing down the area where you want to live first. Whether that’s a suburb or in the city, figure out what part of Tampa has the amenities and housing your family wants. Then, see what schools are in the area.

Do your research to figure out how those schools do in terms of reading and math proficiencies, graduation rates, and overall academics. Then, take a look at a few of your top choices to see which is best for your children.

Suburban Tampa schools are generally similar to most suburban schools throughout Florida: great academics, a low student-to-teacher ratio, lots of sports, and fun extracurricular activities for kids of all ages.

Westchase is one of the suburbs with great public schools. A resident says, “I’ve grown up in the Westchase area. It’s a one stop shop area. The elementary, and High Schools are all A schools. A lot of local restaurants and and supermarkets. It’s family orientated and great to raise children. It has many activities for people to do. I would recommend anybody relocating from another state, Westchase is the area to raise your family at.

One resident says, “Keystone is an amazing place to live! It is very centrally located just outside Tampa, all the main attractions and shops in the Tampa area are at most 30 min away. Even though when in Keystone it feels like a rural, agricultural area, there are many grocery stores, shopping plazas and restaurants to pick from only 5-10 minutes away.” They also mention, “Overall it is a great place to live for someone wanting the country life experience while not sacrificing any modern amenities of the city.

Want to move to a city where your kids will thrive? That place might just be Phoenix! Arizona’s state capital, Phoenix, has the fifth-highest population in the country. It also offers a highly rated education system, great weather, abundant job opportunities, and much more.

So, what are the schools like in Phoenix? Today, we’re going to dive into all you should know. Stay tuned to find out what the best schools in Phoenix, AZ, are and where are some good options you could send your kids this upcoming school year.

A house in Downtown Phoenix

How do you find the best schools in Phoenix?

Moves can be stressful at times, especially if you’re moving with children and haven’t narrowed down schools yet. Finding the right school for your kiddos depends on a few things (e.g., whether you want to enroll them in a public or private school).

Let’s say public school is up your alley. If so, there are 285 public school districts in the area, so you have quite a few options. When it comes to private schools, you’ll find that there are 553 to choose from. To narrow down the many choices for schools to the best schools in Phoenix, here are some things to think about:

  • What percentage of seniors graduate each year?
  • How do the math and reading proficiencies compare to the rest of the state?
  • What are the general rankings for classes, teachers, and such?

Now that we’ve covered some of the main questions you’ll need to look into before deciding on a school in Phoenix, let’s talk more about the school systems as a whole.

How are public schools in Phoenix?

Phoenix schools are found in the top half of public schools in the state. As of the most recent school year, the high-school graduation rate for public schools in Arizona is 78%. The graduation rate in Phoenix varies by year and school, with the last reported graduation rate being 81.5%. (Typically, it sticks around 80%.)

The math proficiency in the Phoenix public school system is 41%, which is just below the state average (45%). As for reading, roughly 42% of public school students are proficient, again just below the state average (also 45%).

If you’re strongly considering a relocation to Phoenix, there are a plethora of good potential schools for kids of all ages. It’s always helpful to check out the schools in your target part of the city or suburb so that you can get a better idea of what is available there before signing any dotted lines. That’s because you’re a little more limited in schools if you go the public school route since your options are usually determined by your physical location in the city.

What are suburban Phoenix schools like?

As is the case with most suburbs, Phoenix suburbs have top-rated schools with various opportunities for kids of all ages to try out new extracurricular activities and classes. They also help students prepare for college as much as possible and encourage them to challenge themselves.

Why are suburban schools in Phoenix so great? On top of the reasons mentioned above, suburban schools generally have smaller class sizes, which means that students get more one-on-one attention and a wonderful learning experience.

One of the best Phoenix suburbs for schools is Paradise Valley. Of this city, a resident says, “My husband and I love where we live in Paradise Valley. Great schools , community, very family friendly.” She also goes on to add, “Uber rides can be taken central location not much to walk to aside from restaurants around PV Mall.”

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

When it comes to the best suburbs for schools in Phoenix, AZ, you can’t go wrong with Sun Lakes, Gilbert, or Chandler. These three suburbs have top-rated schools and amenities for families that make them some of the best places to live in the city of Phoenix.

We’ll kick things off with Sun Lakes. According to current residents, this city offers many places to walk your dogs, upscale landscaping, and a quiet and family-friendly atmosphere. It’s also not hard to find parking, which is a huge plus for those commuting to work. The public schools also get an A+.

Moving onto Gilbert, this is another top-rated suburb, which is considered the leading suburb to raise kids in throughout Phoenix. Nicknamed the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World,” this city is known for growing quickly and being the country’s biggest town. It also offers A-rated public schools, giving you confidence that your kids will have a good place to attend if you choose to move there.

Third up is Chandler. Reports call it Phoenix’s best suburb to call home, and it helps that the city has both A+ public schools and is known for having plenty of activities for kids. One resident says, “[There is] lots to do. Water parks, desert breeze park, the zoo, botanical gardens. There was mountainous hiking not too far away, 3D glow in the dark mini golf, ice rink, skating rinks, etc.” When you combine that with good schools, Chandler sounds like a great place to live!

What are the best school districts in Phoenix?

Finding the best schools in St. Louis doesn’t have to be difficult. However, it can be if you don’t know where to start. To save you time in your search, we put together a comprehensive guide on St. Louis schools to help you figure out which school is the right one for your kiddos.

So, grab a pen and paper, and get ready. We’re here to share all there is to know about public and private schools here in the Gateway to the West. Hopefully, it’s just what you’ve been looking for. Let’s get started!

How do you find the best schools in St. Louis?

Most importantly, you’ll want to decide between public vs. private school. There are both in St. Louis, and your kids’ public school options can be more limited based on your physical location.

If you want to narrow down your search for the very best schools in St. Louis, here are some things to evaluate:

  • What is the average percentage of seniors who graduate each year?
  • What are the math and reading proficiency levels?
  • How are academics and teachers overall?

Read on for more information on the school systems in St. Louis, Missouri.

How are public schools in St. Louis?

St. Louis public schools are in the lower half of public schools in the state of Missouri. Referring to public schools only, the state has an average math proficiency of 42% and a reading proficiency of 49%. St. Louis is below that number in both math and reading, with a 20% math proficiency and 25% reading proficiency.

The state’s average graduation rate is 89.6%. St. Louis’s high-school graduation rate is close to that at 87.2% as of the 2020-2021 school year. Some of the schools in the St. Louis Public Schools District have even higher graduation rates than the state average. (Check out Metro Academic and Classical High School, for example, which has a graduation rate of a whopping 96%.)

As you might expect, where you decide to live in St. Louis makes a huge difference in where your kids can go to school. That means that before you pick a place to move to (city vs. suburbs), make sure the school has what your child is looking for first.

That means that if they’re interested in performing arts, look for that. If they love football or basketball, check out the sports programs. These things can make a huge difference in your child’s happiness.

Here’s a peek at some of the best public schools in St. Louis, from elementary to high school:

What private schools are in St. Louis?

St. Louis has approximately 149 private schools, and 23% of students in grades K-12 attend one of these. These are some of the best private schools in St. Louis:

Of course, the schools above aren’t all the options you have in St. Louis. Here are some more schools to look at:

What are suburban St. Louis schools like?

The suburbs are where you’ll find some of the top schools in the city. Why are they so great? Class sizes are generally smaller, which ensures your kids get more one-on-one attention during class, helping them to best retain what they’re learning.

We took a look at one suburb, Kirkwood, and the people living there rave about it. One resident says, “I love kirkwood! Great grade/middle schools and you can walk anywhere and it’s relatively safe. All kinds of families and a great “downtown” area with lots of shopping and music and food.

The reviews for other St. Louis suburbs are similar, citing great schools, safe neighborhoods, and plenty of things to do for families. If you’re trying to figure out which suburb is best for your family, we recommend coming up with a list of a few suburbs and jotting down the schools in each one.

Then, see which suburb is within your price range. Narrow down your list a little more, and check out the ratings for the different schools. That will help you figure out which suburb is worth moving to in St. Louis.

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

Clayton, Ladue, and Olivette have a handful of the best schools in the St. Louis suburbs. Clayton is known for having kid-friendly neighborhoods, a fun and popping downtown atmosphere, and–you guessed right–top-notch education. According to the city website, “The City’s public school district is one of the nation’s best, with 95% of its high school graduates going on to college.” The population is roughly 16,763.

Ladue is another suburb with high school ratings. Not only is it a short drive to downtown St. Louis and St. Louis Lambert International Airport, according to residents, but it’s also safe and relatively quiet. About 8,631 people live in Ladue.

Finally, there’s Olivette. This suburb is one of the top places to raise kids in the state. It has wonderful public schools and also gets an A+ for kids (for the schools, yes, but also because it’s near the Saint Louis Zoo and Shaw Park Aquatic Center!). Roughly 7,837 people live in Olivette.

What are the best school districts in St. Louis?

These have been voted St. Louis’s best school districts:

School District of Clayton

Missouri’s top school district, the School District of Clayton, boasts As in nearly every area, including academics, teachers, and college prep. There are 2,514 students, with about 72% math proficient and 74% reading proficient.

Kirkwood School District

The Kirkwood School District has top-notch classes (AP and gifted programs included), as well as clubs and activities. The student population is 6,072. What are the math and reading proficiency levels? Math is at 66%, and reading is at 73%.

Ladue School District

The Ladue School District serves 4,235 students, and people say that one of the best parts about this school district is the low student-to-teacher ratio. The math proficiency is 70%, and the reading proficiency is just above that at 72%.

Chicago, Illinois, is America’s third-biggest city. About 3 million people call Chicago home, enjoying all that it has to offer, from Cubs, Bears, or White Sox games to a variety of theaters and festivals.

Needless to say, there’s lots to do in this Illinois city. However, if you have kids, you probably have one big question on your mind besides the activities and amenities.

That is, “How are the schools?”

Today, we’re going to cover all you need to know about the different school systems, including where to find the best schools in Chicago, IL. Let’s get started. Shall we?

Downtown Chicago Skyline

How do you find the best schools in Chicago?

Let us ask you a question first. Do you prefer a public or private school for your kiddos? It’s an important question because your kids may have fewer options on where they can attend school based on where you live in Chicago if you go the public school route. Private school is different that way.

To locate the best schools in Chicago, here are some questions to mull over:

  • Is the graduation rate at or equal to the graduation rate in the state of Ohio?
  • What percentage of kids are math and reading proficient?
  • How are the academics, clubs, activities, and teachers?

Now, let’s get a little more specific about Chicago’s schools.

How are public schools in Chicago?

Per Public School Review, roughly 83% of students in Chicago who are in grades K-12 go to public school. That is about 5% less than in the state of Illinois as a whole. The math proficiency in Chicago is 24%, which is quite a bit less than Illinois’s average of 32%.

The reading proficiency in Chicago is 27%, which is again less than the state’s average (38%). When it comes down to it, the Chicago public school system scores about a 4 out of 10, putting it in the lower half of schools in Illinois. Although, despite being lower on average, there are many highly rated schools in Chicago that far surpass the state average, including in areas such as the high-school graduation rate.

Illinois’s graduation rate is 88% as of the most recent school year. The graduation rate in Chicago looks different for every school and school district. Chicago Public Schools, in particular, has an 82.9% high-school graduation rate.

What private schools are in Chicago?

Chicago has many highly rated private schools, including but not limited to:

You’ll find more of the best private schools in Chicago below:

What are suburban Chicago schools like?

Suburban Chicago schools are generally highly rated and score well in areas such as teachers, classes, and college prep. While some of the suburbs don’t have a lot of diversity, there are still options out there that could work well for your kids. Think about what kind of school atmosphere they like (including clubs and activities), and narrow down your search from there.

Of Buffalo Grove (one top-rated Chicago suburb for schools), a resident says, “Buffalo Grove is a great place for K-12 education, with nearby schools such as Aptakisic, Daniel Wright and Stevenson being in the top ranked schools of the country. The neighborhood is also very safe and welcoming, with a lot of small, individually-owned businesses.

You can find a great school for your kids virtually anywhere in Chicago if you look hard enough. Just remember to research the suburb first to make sure you will all be happy living there before you get your kids’ hopes up on a school.

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

Chicago’s suburbs are known for having great school systems. Where can you find the best schools in the Chicago suburbs? We recommend looking at Long Grove, Kenilworth, and Lincolnshire. According to Niche, Long Grove is even called the top place to raise kids in Illinois. Public schools, housing, and family friendliness all get As in this rural-style suburb, which has 7,907 residents.

Like Long Grove, Kenilworth gets a #1 rating, being the top place to raise kids in Cook County. About 2,356 people live in this small suburb, which has top schools and great safety ratings.

Then, there’s Lincolnshire. The population is approximately 7,694 people, and schools and kid friendliness both come out with As. One resident even says, “Having lived in Lincolnshire as both a child and an adult, I cannot imagine living anywhere else. The school districts, both 103 and 125, are top notch. I received an excellent education through these schools, so much so that I want my own children to receive the same quality education.

Congrats on moving to Cincinnati! It’s a great city with tons of opportunities and things to do for families. It also has many highly rated schools that you can feel confident can help prepare your kids for college in the upcoming years.

In this blog, we’re going to share the best schools in Cincinnati. We hope it makes your school decision a little easier!

How do you find the best schools in Cincinnati?

Cincinnati is massive. Not only is it Ohio’s third-biggest city, but it’s also the 65th biggest in the U.S. Naturally, cities of that size have hundreds of options for schools, including both public and private schools.

To see which school is right for your kiddos, it’s not a bad idea to narrow down a place to live in Cincinnati first. That way, you don’t have to move later if you love the school but aren’t in love with the area.

You’ll also have to choose between public and private school. (There are advantages and disadvantages to both, with the main disadvantage of private school being the price tag. If the price isn’t a concern, then a private school is a wonderful choice.)

Here are some questions to ask yourself when searching for schools:

  • What is the graduation rate, and how does it compare to the state as a whole?
  • Are the math and reading proficiency levels above or close to the state average?
  • What grade would the school get for teachers and academics?

Now that we’ve covered that, let’s move on to what schools in Cincinnati are like. That way, you can find the best schools in Cincinnati.

How are public schools in Cincinnati?

As with any major city, you have to take public school ratings with a grain of salt. That’s because the ratings vary by school and exact location within the city or suburbs. For example, it has been said that some of Ohio’s best schools are found right in Cincinnati. However, at the same time, most Cincinnati schools are ranked in the lower half of Ohio schools as a whole, according to Public School Review

First thing’s first, it’s important to look at the math and reading proficiency levels when evaluating schools. Ohio’s average proficiency levels are 63% for math and 64% for reading, while Cincinnati schools have a math proficiency level of 56% and a reading proficiency level of 59%.

Ohio’s high-school graduation rate is 83% for the 2022-2023 school year. To compare, Cincinnati’s graduation rate is just below the state average, coming in at 81%. That doesn’t mean all Cincinnati schools are below average, though. In fact, there are many highly rated public schools that can be found in the suburbs and other parts of the city (more on these below).

What private schools are in Cincinnati?

These private schools can all be found in the Queen City:

Looking for more of the best private schools in Cincinnati? Here are some suggestions:

What are suburban Cincinnati schools like?

Let’s see what the locals say. Shall we? One resident of Mason, Warren County’s top place to move to, says, “I have been living in Mason for almost 6 years and I love it. First of all, it is super safe. I’ve never had an issue or felt insecure while in Mason. The schools are amazing as well, they offer so many different classes, especially in the high school.”

They also add, “The area is very nice even though it is a bit expensive. If you have the opportunity to live here, I would recommend taking it!

One thing you’ll see a lot when looking up suburban Cincinnati schools is that many of them have great scores for schools, academics, and safety. They also emphasize the quality of the school, meaning that you can trust that your child will get a good education and feel comfortable at the school at the end of the day. There are usually not a lot of students, so that gives teachers a chance to focus on individual students and help them become the best they can be in school.

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

The Village of Indian Hill, Montgomery, and Sixteen Mile Stand are three of Cincinnati’s top suburbs for schools. To begin with, the Village of Indian Hill is the kind of suburb where you don’t have to worry about noise all hours of the night. It’s only a couple of miles from Cincinnati, situated in beautiful Hamilton County. About 5,770 people live in this suburb, which has top-rated schools and gets an A+ for being kid friendly.

Next up is Montgomery, the second-best spot to move to in Cincinnati. Many people find this suburb of 10,818 people to be beautiful, fun, historical, and a perfect fit for families. One resident says, “We moved to Montgomery from another nice neighborhood (Madeira, OH) and couldn’t be happier with our choice. We have found an open community that embraces its diversity and offers our kids a great education, without being pretentious or insular. For us, it has been the right mix.

Then, of course, there’s Sixteen Mile Stand. This city got its name years ago, back when Montgomery Road was utilized for stage coaches. It was where coaches halted, which happened to be 16 miles away from Cincinnati. There are 3,120 residents in this suburb. Public schools and family friendliness both score an A.

What are the best school districts in Cincinnati?

Below are Cincinnati’s leading school districts:

Sycamore Community School District

As the top school district in Cincinnati, Sycamore Community School District has A-rated classes, teachers, diversity, college prep, administration, and more. About 5,522 students go there between grades PK and K-12. The math proficiency and reading proficiency are 87% and 86%, respectively.

Mason City School District

This school district takes the trophy as Warren County’s top school district. Roughly 10,267 kids attend Mason City School District between grades PK and K-12. Nearly 9 in 10 students (89%) are math proficient, and 86% are reading proficient.

Indian Hill Exempted Village School District

Indian Hill Exempted Village School District is one of the three highest-rated Ohio school districts. Like the other school districts we’ve covered, Indian Hill has top-notch teachers, academics, clubs, activities, etc. The student population is 2,160. As for the math proficiency, it’s 91%. The reading proficiency is slightly below that at 89%.

Moving to Ohio is a great idea if you want a better cost of living and scenery that takes your breath away. Many people thinking about relocating to Ohio choose to move to Cleveland. If you have kids and think Cleveland might be a good fit for you, read on.

We’re going to chat about what the best schools in Cleveland are and how to narrow down your options when there are so many on the table. We hope it helps with the decision-making process!

Cleveland Downtown | Bellhop

How do you find the best schools in Cleveland?

If you add up Cleveland’s public and private schools, the number you’ll get is 543. That goes to show that while your options for Cleveland schools aren’t unlimited, they might as well be–considering just how many choices your kids have for preschool through 12th grade.

To find the best schools in Cleveland, we looked at a few key pieces of information, including:

  • What is the average high-school graduation rate?
  • Are the reading and math proficiency levels above the state average?
  • How are the schools rated in terms of academics, teachers, and college prep?

Follow along to see how different schools in Cleveland stack up.

How are public schools in Cleveland?

The majority of people who go to school in Cleveland are in the public school system (82%–to be exact). How good are the schools? It varies based on your location in Cleveland (e.g., whether you’re in the city or the suburbs). Ohio has an average math proficiency of 63% and a reading proficiency of 64%. Unfortunately, the public schools in Cleveland fall short of these numbers, with a math proficiency of 42% and a reading proficiency of 47%.

When you look at Ohio’s public schools as a whole, Cleveland schools rank on the lower side. That means that if you want your kids to go to the best school in Cleveland, you’ll want to do some research to see how the schools rank in the suburbs or part of the city you have your eyes on.

Another factor to look at in ranking is the high-school graduation rate. The Cleveland Municipal School District has a graduation rate of 76%, which is lower than the state average (83%). Of course, it’s important to remember that this is just one school district out of many. That means that there are other highly rated school districts in Cleveland that boast higher proficiency levels, graduation rates, and more.

What private schools are in Cleveland?

Cleveland is proud to have 361 private schools. If you want your kids to get a quality education, and you’re less concerned about the price, take a look at these schools:

Need more choices? Here are some additional schools that make the list of the best private schools in Cleveland:

What are suburban Cleveland schools like?

In most suburbs you look up in Cleveland, you’ll see A+ ratings for schools, academics, teachers, extracurricular activities, and safety. The schools have small class sizes, which allows students to get a more one-on-one teaching experience. That can help them do better in school and give them a chance to build stronger relationships with different teachers.

We looked at South Russell, one Cleveland suburb, to see what the locals had to say about the schools. A resident says, “We have lived here about a year and came from a very populated suburb in Ohio. S. Russell is “semi-rural”…so quiet, extremely safe, plenty of amenities close by, charming Chagrin Falls minutes away, and a fantastic, small school district. The only negatives would be lack of diversity and major chains are 25-30 minutes away.

Suburban Neighborhood from an aerial view

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

Solon, Glenwillow, and Pepper Pike are three Cleveland suburbs renowned for great schools. We’ll kick things off with Solon. This suburb has been called the #1 place to raise kids out of all the cities in Cleveland. About 22,858 people live there, and one resident says, “In the 17 years that I’ve lived here, I’d say Soloners are most proud of our school district (best in the state). Also, a marching band that’s at least as good as Ohio State’s. Our football team is good too but the marching band attracts more people to games.

Glenwillow is another beautiful suburb deserving of the title of being in the top-five places to raise kids in Cleveland. There are only 933 residents, but don’t let the small size fool you. The schools are still top notch, and there are abundant places to eat out and shop.

That brings us to our third pick, Pepper Pike. It’s not just known for its schools but also for being one of the top places to move to in Cleveland. The population is roughly 6,319 people. If you want phenomenal schools, good restaurants, a quiet atmosphere, and plenty of scenery, Pepper Pike is a wonderful option.

What are the best school districts in Cleveland, Ohio?

Here are some of Cleveland’s highest-rated school districts:

Solon City School District

This school district is the best in all of Ohio, with As on all counts (academics, teachers, diversity–you name it!). About 4,521 students go there between grades PK and K-12. The math proficiency is an impressive 96%, and the reading proficiency is 94%.

Hudson City School District

Have your heart set on Summit County? Check out the Hudson City School District. It’s the leading school district in the county, rated an A+ in everything from clubs and activities to college prep. The student population is approximately 4,571. How about the math and reading proficiency levels? They are 91% for math and 89% for reading.

Beachwood City School District

If you want great all-around schools, teachers, and college prep, the Beachwood City School District is a good choice. There are roughly 1,631 students between grades PK and K-12. About 87% are math proficient, and 88% are reading proficient.

Columbus’s population is soaring, with the current population sitting at 929,492. Word has it that it gets 1.29% bigger every year, and there are no signs of slowing down (unlike many other cities in Ohio).

That said, if you’re going back and forth about moving to Columbus, OH, we get it. Let us help you out by answering one of the biggest questions we see from parents. That is, “What are the best schools in Columbus, Ohio?”

Let’s get right into it!

Columbus, OH Skyline

How do you find the best schools in Columbus, OH?

Columbus is not exactly a small city. In fact, it’s the 14th biggest city in the U.S. That comes with 623 total schools, which range from preschool to high school. So, with that many schools, how do you know which is best?

One of the biggest things you’ll have to think about is whether you want your kids to attend public or private school. Why? The reason for this is that your kids might be restricted on which public school they can attend based on where you live, so if you move without settling on a good school first, you might have to go with whatever is there–or go the private school route.

In searching for a good school in the area, here are some questions to think about:

  • What’s the graduation rate? Has it improved or gotten worse?
  • What percentage of kids are math and reading proficient?
  • How are the teachers and academics?

Read on for some more handy information about the best schools in Columbus, Ohio. \

Kids learning in School

How are public schools in Columbus?

Fun fact: you’ll find some of Ohio’s best public schools right here in Columbus. The graduation rate is different for all schools. Some schools (e.g., Columbus Alternative High School, Eastmoor Academy, Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School, and Centennial High School) have a 96%-99% high-school graduation rate

As for Columbus City Schools, the city’s biggest school district, the graduation rate is 72%. The state of Ohio’s graduation rate for public schools is 83% as of the most recent school year. In other words, some schools have a little bit to go to hit or surpass the state average, while others are soaring well above it.

All in all, about 47% of students are math proficient, and 52% are reading proficient in the city. Both of those percentages are below the state average (63% for math and 64% for reading), according to Public School Review

It’s a good idea to evaluate the graduation rates and proficiency levels in a handful of schools if you’re thinking of moving to Ohio–or Columbus in particular. That way, you can know that your child is going to a good school, and you’re living in a good part of the city or in the suburbs. Just be sure that the school offers the clubs and activities your child is interested in for the best chance of adaptation.

…And if that’s not enough, here are some more of the best private schools in Columbus to consider:

Suburban House on a leafy street

What are suburban Columbus schools like?

A great way to find out what suburban Columbus schools are like is to check out reviews. We took a look at Grandview Heights, for starters. One resident says, “It really is the perfect location with its close proximity to downtown and the university. It’s extremely safe and has great schools. The downside to its growing popularity is 1. It’s now extremely expensive and 2. all the new construction is causing the town to lose some of its charm.

The suburbs are generally good places to send your kids to school when it comes to Columbus. Many suburbs (Grandview Heights included) are renowned for highly rated schools, family friendliness, and safety. You’ll also generally notice that there are fewer students per teacher in many Columbus suburbs, which allows your kids to get the best support.

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

If you’re searching for the best schools in Columbus, OH, set your sights on Powell, Dublin, or Bexley. Powell has been named the top place to live in Columbus and is praised for its great public schools, beauty, and general family friendliness. The population is 13,353 people.

Dublin is another wonderful suburb for schools that happens to be rated Franklin County’s top spot to live in. With 47,824 people living there (many of which are families), your kids will have a fun time meeting new friends and attending classes. (Public schools are rated an A+ there, by the way.)

Of course, we can’t forget Bexley. It’s another leading suburb with a highly rated school system, despite its small size. (The population is just 13,805 people!) One student says, “We may be a small school/suburb area but I think that’s a big factor in what makes this community so unique. Class sizes are smaller; which allows everyone to get to know each other, between students or teachers or even the interactions between students and teachers. This allows great relationships to be built between students of different ages and provides students with lots of helping resources because the teachers want to see the students succeed.

What are the best school districts in Columbus, OH?

You’ll find some of the city’s top school districts below:

Dublin City Schools

Dublin City Schools (PK, K-12) is rated Columbus’s #1 school district. It gets an A+ in multiple categories, including but not limited to teachers, academics, and college prep. Roughly 16,254 students attend this school district, which has an 81% math proficiency and 80% reading proficiency.

With both gifted programs and AP classes available, your kids are sure to find challenging curriculums at Olentangy that help them prepare for college in the years to come. About 22,089 students go to this school district. Both the math and reading proficiency levels are 89%.

Moving to Birmingham, Alabama? How exciting! The “Magic City” is chock-full of great suburbs and plenty of things to do. (It’s also an affordable city, with the cost of living nearly 25% below the national average.)

So, as you can tell, the city has its charms, but if you have kiddos, you might be wondering about the school systems. There are 370 schools to choose from in this Jefferson County city, making it hard to find the right neighborhood in Birmingham.
Today, we’re going to cover the different schools so that you can find the best schools in Birmingham, AL. Let’s jump right in!

Kids learning with a teacher

How do you find the best schools in Birmingham, AL?

Birmingham is the third-biggest city in the state of Alabama. As you might expect, there are schools all around the city, meaning you have quite a few options for places to send your kids. The city has both public schools and private schools, both of which we’ll go over below.

How do you choose between the different schools? Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is the graduation rate, and how does it compare to the state as a whole?
  • What are the math and reading proficiency levels?
  • How is the school rated overall?

Stay tuned for more information about the best schools in Birmingham, AL.

How are public schools in Birmingham?

Alabama’s public high-school graduation rate is 91% as of the most recent school year. The graduation rate in Birmingham is below the state average at 83.6%, though there are schools in Birmingham with graduation rates in the upper 90s (Homewood High School and Oak Mountain High School–to name a few).

The math and reading proficiencies depend on the school district. Birmingham City Schools, for example, has a math proficiency of 21% and a reading proficiency of 24%. To compare, Alabama’s average math proficiency is 47%, and the average reading proficiency is 78%

While Birmingham does come in lower in terms of average math and reading proficiencies, it also is home to schools with the highest proficiency levels in the state. For instance, Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham has a math proficiency of 96% and is one of the best schools in Alabama.

What are suburban Birmingham schools like?

The schools in the Birmingham suburbs are generally highly rated. Many of the suburbs get an A for the public school systems, quality of the teachers, safety, and overall help in getting students ready for college.

All in all, the suburban schools are rated better than the schools in the city. One of the reasons for this is the lower student-to-teacher ratio. A downside of going to school in the suburbs is the lack of diversity.

So, how do you choose the right suburb? Take a look at the suburbs with the best school systems (we’ll go over this below), and then, find a suburb that’s in your price range with the amenities you want nearby. If you send your kids to public school, they may have to go to a select school in your neighborhood, so it’s worth looking into before buying or renting a home just anywhere in Birmingham.

What suburbs have particularly good school systems?

Birmingham has many suburbs with impressive school systems, notably Homewood, Hoover, and Mountain Brook. Homewood is a charming small town with a surprising amount of places to shop, dine, and have fun. This Birmingham suburb gets an A+ for both public schools and family friendliness.

As for Hoover, this is a one-of-a-kind place to live that’s situated at the base of the scenic Appalachian Mountains. This city, which has a population of 85,386, has one of the Southeast’s biggest shopping centers and plenty of artsy and outdoorsy things to do. Like Homewood, Hoover gets top scores for family friendliness and the quality of the public school systems.

Next, we have Mountain Brook. Approximately 20,178 people call this city home, with many of the young people enrolled in A+ rated public schools. One resident says, “Everyone in Mountain Brook is very friendly and the education is amazing. There are so many opportunities to stay active in the community. My only complaints are that there is a lack of diversity and the lack of street lights. For all of the young drivers out there, it makes it difficult once it gets dark out. Other than that, Mountain Brook is amazing. I could not have asked for a better place to live!

Have kids? One of the initial questions that come to mind when you think about moving to a different city is: what are the schools like? In a city that’s as large as Philadelphia, we understand that finding a top-rated school in a good community might feel a little overwhelming. Fortunately, Bellhop is glad to help you out!

If you’re considering relocating, we have a comprehensive guide that covers all you need to know to narrow down the best schools in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That means both public and private schools!

How do you find the best schools in Philadelphia?

Philly has a whopping 1,659 schools, with 1,342 private schools. With that many options to choose from, how do you shorten your list of potential schools for your kids?

One of the first things to do is decide between public or private school. For public schools, your kids could be limited on where they can go to school based on the area you live in. Private schools can give you more options, but there’s also tuition to consider.

Here are some more things to think about before committing to a school:

  • What’s the graduation rate?
  • Is the school highly rated in terms of academics?
  • What percentage of students are math and reading proficient?

To find out more about the best schools in Philadelphia, read on! We’ve got you covered.

How are public schools in Philadelphia?

All in all, Philadelphia schools are above average. In 2018, Philadelphia’s high-school graduation rate was 83.9%. That number went down to 75% for the 2021-2021 school year across the city and turned to 80% for the District schools. For alternative high schools in the area, the rate went down by about 10% between the 2029-2020 and 2020-2021 school years.

Pennsylvania’s last reported graduation rate was 88.7%, putting Philadelphia below the state average. As for the math and reading proficiency levels, they look different for every school. However, it’s always nice to have an average to go by, so we’ll share some numbers.

The Philadelphia City School District, in specific, is in the lower half of Pennsylvania public schools when it comes to test scores, but at the same time, sources show that it “has one of the highest concentrations of top ranked public schools in Pennsylvania.”

The math proficiency is 23%, and the reading proficiency is 37%. Pennsylvania ranks higher than this district in both math (45%) and reading proficiencies (62%). Of course, there are still plenty of schools throughout Philly that have even higher proficiency levels, as well as graduation rates. You’ll find some of the highest-rated and best public schools in Philadelphia in the suburbs.
