What is Life Like in Dallas?

Dallas has claimed the title, “the Heart of Texas,” and you don’t have to dig very deep to understand why. Most obviously, Dallas is right in the center of the state. But the city is also famous for its friendly and welcoming residents. 

Before starting we have to say that Dallas is just part of the bigger Dallas – Fort Worth metropolitan area. Combined, their population is well over 7.5 million and ranks fourth largest in the country. It’s just because both Dallas and Fort Worth have grown so much closer, and share a great airport that we think of them as ‘DFW.’  

The city of Dallas counts 1.3 million folks. The city has bragging rights as the largest in the state and likes to remind Houston that it is.  

Things in Texas don’t come small, and Dallas isn’t an exception. This big-hearted city is home to the country’s largest farmers market and largest urban arts district.

Located north of Downtown and south of University Park, this upscale residential area is full of beautiful parks, tranquil residential streets, and show-stopping houses. Home prices easily hit averaged $1.5M in 2021. But for those who can afford it, Highland Park is an outstanding place to raise a family. 

What’s Happening in Highland Park 

Highland Park is pretty enough that a Sunday stroll down shaded streets could become your favorite weekend activity. But the area offers high-class shopping and dining as well. Locals looking for a little more weekend fun can easily access the many bars and nightclubs in nearby Uptown, Knox-Henderson, and Downtown. 

Highland Park Village is absolutely posh and acts as the buzzing center of town. The oldest outdoor mall in the U.S., Highland Park Village sells luxury goods and designer labels, like Gucci, Chanel, and Harry Winston. Located in central Dallas County, about 8 miles north of downtown, and 38 miles east of Fort Worth, University Park is set in the perfect position. Despite its proximity to the city, University Park’s broad tree-lined streets and early 20th-century architecture are distinctly different from the gleaming skyscrapers and office buildings of downtown. 

Considered an “Inner Suburb,” University Park still has plenty of bustling. This upscale Dallas neighborhood is packed with shops and restaurants, as well as some of Dallas’s breweries. Now one of the most prestigious enclaves in Dallas, University Park boasts of charming old homes, new construction, and an exemplary-rated school district. 

What’s Happening in University Park

Locals of University Park can get to downtown without having to get on one of those often-clogged highways. But within its own borders, residents can easily access grocery stores and charming corner cafes, cookie shops, and French bakeries. Sandwich shops, laid-back coffee shops, and local boutiques surround Snider Plaza. Thirsty? Try either Pegasus City Brewery or Celestial Beerworks to make new friends. 

University Park’s name doesn’t lie. The area is packed with 20 local parks, including Goar Park, Burleson Prak, Curtis Park, Coffee Park, Germany Park, and Elana’s Children’s Park. The nearby Caruth Park is home to a fishing pond and playgrounds. 

Right next door (about 4 miles to the east), you’ll find White Rock Lake Park and its accompanying Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Residents can also easily access the Tenison Park Golf Course. The stunning Dallas Country Club sits snug against the southern border of the neighborhood.

University Park’s public schools are not only among the best in the DFW metroplex, they’re among the best in the state of Texas. Families in University Park are eligible to attend Highland Park Independent School District schools. And many consider the local high school, Highland Park High School, to be the best available in the DFW metroplex.

University Park housing is dominated by charming single-family homes. Homes don’t come cheap in this coveted neighborhood. The median home price in University Park pushes over $2 million. 

Preston Hollow

Once home to George W. Bush and his wife, this elite neighborhood is full of aged oak trees, gorgeous homes, large lots, great private schools, and a homey ambiance.  

Preston Hollow has been a popular spot for families and young professionals for decades. And it sits just six miles north of downtown Dallas. It’s a great spot for those who want quieter streets, close access to the city, and a gorgeous place to call home.

The best birthday parties happen in Preston Hollow. This neighborhood is one of the best for families who want a little space. Estate homes sit on beautiful pieces of property, and families in Preston Hollow are not constrained by houses on top of each other. Housing ranges from modest and affordable cottages to highly elite and luxurious estates. Many of these grand homes were built in the ‘20s and ‘30s, but there are lots of homes being renovated and new constructions as well. 

Uptown

A Little About Austin and its Neighborhoods

Tucked into the greater Texas Hill Country, Austin was first given the charming title ‘Waterloo.’ Soon after, this Texan capital was renamed to honor the ‘Father of Texas’ and first secretary of state, Stephen F. Austin. 

But a lot has happened since 1839. At this point, if you don’t hop on Austin quickly, it’ll ride away without you. Since 2020, Austin is now the fastest-growing large city in the country. People are moving here to get a taste of the year-round warm weather, nature oases, incredible food, live music, and laid-back culture. 

The city’s 100+ neighborhoods are divided up into general regions (ex: Southeast Austin, Central Austin, West Austin, etc.). And these regions are separated by boundaries like Hwy. 1, Interstate 35, and Lady Bird Lake. Surrounding Austin’s perimeters are neighborhoods and mini-cities like Kyle, Wimberley, and Round Rock. And many people living in the area lump these neighboring areas in with the city.

Avery Ranch

This family-friendly neighborhood is roughly 20 miles north of downtown Austin, giving it that peaceful neighborhood feels just outside of the city business. It has a very low crime rate and is considered ideal for young families. A drive to downtown Austin will take about half an hour, as long as it is not during rush hour, which peaks between 7-8 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. It has a somwhat walkable and bikeable by WalkScore.com. The area is part of a large master-planned community that holds over 4,000 homes and three public elementary schools. 

What’s Happening in Avery Ranch

Avery Ranch offers a beautiful portion of the hill country with tennis and pickleball  courts, pools, and hiking and bike trails. The 226-acre golf course sits directly on the neighborhood’s lake. Large, nearby community parks, like the Brushy Creek Lake Park, Brushy Creek Sports Park, and Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex provide many more recreational opportunities.

Brentwood

Located about 7 miles north of downtown, this neighborhood is known for its local businesses, long-term residents, and close-knit community. Crime rates in Brentwood are lower than the national average. It can take up to 20 minutes to drive to downtown from Brentwood. Considered a Biker’s Paradise by WalkScore, bicyclists can traverse the roads in about 25 minutes to get downtown. Public transit, also rated highly, is available from Brentwood to downtown Austin, with routes every 15 minutes. 

With a small-town feel in the midst of the big city, Brentwood is home to many families with children and ranks very high in walkability. Most errands can be accomplished on foot so grab the backpack and stroller! Old trees line the streets; creeks wind between homes.  

What’s Happening in Brentwood 

The Brentwood Park features a playground, pool, picnic areas, walking paths, and athletic fields. The neighborhood is bordered by a number of dining options, like Stiles Switch BBQ, Michi Ramen, and Torchy’s Tacos, to name a few. And cafes are easy to come by, with Monkey Nest Coffee and Epoch Coffee just a walk away. 

Locals also love the excessive amount of nearby places to drink within walking distance. Check out the Christmas-themed Lala’s Little Nugget, Draught House Pub & Brewery, and (our favorite!!) Yard Bar, which sits right in a dog park, offering Pineapple Mighty Swell, and other alcohol-free drinks. 

Schools in Brentwood 

Schools near Brentwood include Lamar Middle School and Austin Classical School. Many locals also like the option of Brentwood’s close-by quality private schools, like Paragon Prep School. Niche rates Gullett Elementary School highly. 

Homes in Brentwood 

Rental homes in the Brentwood area ran about the average for Austin with an average cost of $1,696 per month. Home prices are 10 percent higher than the average for Austin in mid-2023 at $670,000. Prices have come down some at the time of this writing. 

Windsor Park

This rapidly changing neighborhood, only 6 miles northeast of downtown, is home to a diverse blend of families, young professionals, and more established residents. It is a quick 20-minute drive from Windsor Park to downtown Austin. One can avoid the highways by biking downtown in about half an hour.  

While locals of Windsor Park have easy access to all the action of living so close to downtown, they also enjoy the quieter streets, large trees, wide streets, and homey feel of this neighborhood. The area ranks in the top 40 walkable areas of Austin. The great community feel, friendly neighbors, schools within walking distance, affordable housing, and open parks make Windsor Park a popular spot for families. Residents rate the neighborhood as ‘pretty safe.’ 

What’s Happening in Windsor Park 

Perhaps the local’s favorite restaurant in Windsor Park is Paco’s Tacos. This laid-back shop has an outdoor patio and delicious fresh, made to order Mexican food. The bizarre Carousel Lounge offers drinks plus mixers for BYOL, live music and a circus theme. Corona Coffee is always packed with neighborhood locals. And the Bartholomew District Park features a playground, picnic areas, and a pool.

Schools near Windsor Park include Austin Achieve Public School, Blanton Elementary School, Harris Elementary School and the Ascent Academy.

The real estate market in Windsor Park is somewhat competitive. The average home price for buyers is $522,000, 5% below the Austin average. Apartments rent for $1,726 a month.

Pflugerville

This little area is one of the fastest-growing suburban cities in the country in recent years, (178% since 2000). Located about 18 miles northeast of downtown Austin, residents often travel to and from the city in about half an hour, depending on the time of day. It has a low walkability and bike score, but Pflugerville is home to its own charming attractions and has numerous parks, community events, restaurants, and shops.  

What’s Happening in Pflugerville 

Pflugerville has over 40 parks and recreation facilities and 21 undeveloped parks and greenbelts. It’s a nature wonderland out here. One of our favorites is Lake Pflugerville Park, which features a gorgeous 180-acre reservoir. 

For local events, be sure to check out the October outdoor Deutschen Pfest packed with vendors, entertainment and beer, of course. And for a taste of the area’s local grub, check out the Pflugerville Taco House and the Pecan Street Station.

Pflugerville has a variety of houses tyles, but the neighborhood is speckled with the notable prairie style homes. Home prices average $411,000, while apartment rentals average $1,685 monthly. 

Cherrywood

This small, friendly residential area is just 3 miles from downtown, making it an awesome spot for families wanting access to an abundance of things to do – whether going out with the family or going out on a date. It ranks very high for walking and biking, and is one of the most bikeable areas in the Austin area. Cherrywood has all the perks of being downtown, but with quieter streets lined with cute little homes, and parks dotting the neighborhood.  Downtown Austin is just 11 minutes away by car or 20 minutes away by bike. 

What’s Happening in Cherrywood 

Cherrywood is home to the Willowbrook Reach and Patterson Neighborhood Park, and it also neighbors the Mueller Lake Park and Southwest Greenway. 

Besides the exceptional options for eating and drinking just a few miles away from Cherrywood, the neighborhood itself has a few local, yummy gems… 

Check out the Cherrywood Coffeehouse. This charming hyper-local-feel coffee house hosts live music and free yoga classes on an outdoor patio, makes yummy meat-forward and vegan-and-vegetarian-friendly food, and serves over 17 drafts of beer. 

There are over a dozen awesome restaurants and bars along Manor Street which borders the Cherrywood neighborhood. Locals can simply walk off their front porches, down a few blocks and have a pastrami sandwich in their hand in less than 10 minutes.

This neighborhood offers a number of ranch-style homes, as well as contemporary options. The median price for a home in the Cherrywood zip code (78722) is $619,000, making it an affordable option in the area. Rentals are generally around $1,429 per month.

Located northeast of Atlanta, Decatur is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia with a population of roughly ~24,000. A relatively small, quaint, and quiet city, Decatur is known for its involvement in the Civil War, since it was a cornerstone of Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. Local museums such as The Old Courthouse stand as reminders of a small skirmish that occurred between Union and Confederate troops in Decatur.

Beyond its importance in American history, Decatur is known for its variety of Ranch, Colonial, and Cape Cod homes built around the 1920s to 1970s as well as being the home of Agnes Scott College.  
If you’re moving to Decatur from a big city, you’ll have some room to breathe. Lot sizes are fairly large, street parking isn’t too hard to find, and incomes are higher than average. In fact, the median household income in Decatur is roughly $115k according to DataUSA, making it one of the higher-income areas in the Atlanta metro. Despite higher-than-average incomes, though, Decatur still has a cost of living that’s relatively affordable, with a cost of living that’s actually 4% below the national average.

Out of any major city in the Atlanta metro, Decatur has one of the lowest crime rates. Recently, the Decatur Police Department reported that they’ve recently experienced their lowest violent crime rate in over 20 years.

The Decatur City School District serves Decatur, GA. On Niche, it’s ranked as #4 of the Best School Districts in Georgia, with an “A” rating. On GreatSchools, Decatur High won a “College Success” award for preparing students for the academic demands of post-secondary. It’s rated as #4 on the list of the Best School Districts in Georgia. You can rest assured that if you decide to move to Decatur, your children can receive a quality education.

Great Lakes

Developed between 1913 and 1930, the historic Great Lakes neighborhood in Decatur features some of the most amazing residences and churches in the area. Popular home styles include Craftsman, American Foursquare, and Dutch Colonial – all built around the early to mid 20th century.

Things to Do in Great Lakes

Glenlake Park is located nearby and it features a pool for the summertime, tennis courts, picnic areas, and plenty to do for the kids, including playgrounds, soccer fields, and baseball fields. Oakhurst was originally a streetcar suburb of Atlanta, and most of it was developed in the early 20th century. The primary architectural types are Craftsman Bungalows and Cape Cods.

Oakhurst Garden is a lush, idyllic greenspace area that serves as a community garden. It has a greenhouse, community plots (of course), and chickens. The DeKalb Farmers Market ranks as another one of the top things to do for Oakhurst residents. Browse and buy fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers. Winnona Park

This neighborhood is located just south of Decatur Square and is home to Winnona Park, one of the largest parks in Decatur. The park has a playground, baseball field, and a swimming pool, making it a great place for families to relax and have fun. Early advertisements of Winona Park, when it was first being developed in the 1910s and 1920s, boasted that it was “Atlanta’s Most Beautiful Neighborhood” – and it’s a sentiment that many residents share today.

The history of Winnona Park is intimately intertwined with that of the Civil War. It was an area that Union and Confederate troops constantly fought over due to its proximity to the railway lines. Today, of course, there are almost no remnants of that past, just tree-lined, quiet, well-landscaped, and relaxing streets.

Decatur Heights

Decatur Heights has a small-town feel with lots of amenities. It’s a similar streetcar suburb as Winnona Park and Oakhurst, but many of the smaller bungalows were torn down in the 1990s to make way for newer developments, so if you’re seeking a newer home in the area, this might be the place to go.

Sycamore Ridge, for example, was developed in the 1990s and early 2000s. It features detached townhomes between 2500-3500 square feet in size, perfect for modern families looking for up-to-date features.

Things to Do in Decatur Heights

Decatur Heights has a close proximity to downtown Decatur and Glenlake Park, one of the top things to do in the “Great Lakes” neighborhood, listed above. Decatur Heights primarily consists of single-family homes, so many of the top things to do exist outside of the neighborhood boundaries. Still, since it’s so centrally located, there are plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes to explore. You can also just take a relaxing walk around the neighborhood and admire the houses.

Average Home Prices in Decatur Heights

Average home prices in Decatur Heights are about $510k according to RedFin. Just like Winnona Park, however, since there isn’t a huge volume of homes being transferred, this can be misleading. Most homes have a list price between $500-750k.

Located in the northern section of Irving, this area is a small square encompassing only a few streets, with I-183 to the north, North O’Connor Rd to the east, W Grauwyler Rd to the south, and N MacArthur Blvd to the west. However, its location earns it one of the top spots on our list. The Hospital District’s close proximity to DFW Airport (just a ~9 minute drive northwest) and everything that Las Colinas has to offer is just a short drive up MacArthur Blvd.

Additionally, with the Irving Police Department Headquarters located directly south, this is one of the safer neighborhoods in Irving.

A Little About Nashville and its Neighborhoods

But beyond the clichés, Nashville has developed into one of the best places to live in the country over the past decade. This city is full of abundant green spaces, free concerts, pro sports, killer cuisine, and a blossoming brew scene. It’s ripe for start-ups and entrepreneurs, and as more businesses move to the city, jobs continue to grow. 

And let’s not forget its long-term cultural interests. You don’t have to fly to Greece to see the Parthenon. Nashville built a full-scale copy in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. In 2021 the Frist Art Museum opened, offering 12-15 touring art exhibits from the world’s best collections. The city also boasts an excellent symphony to counterbalance the twang found in town.

Nashville’s population is rapidly expanding and now sits a little shy of 700,000, boosted by expats from the usual west coast suspects, plus escapees from Chicago, NYC and D.C. A walk down the historic Ludlow Avenue business district displays independent shops, restaurants, a movie theater specializing in indie and foreign films, all lit by original gas lamps along this tranquil street.

What’s Happening in Clifton

A recent development and contribution to the area is the University Square. This area combines green space, stores, restaurants, shops, and apartments and is packed with a diverse group of patrons.

Just about 5 miles southeast of downtown Denver is one of our favorite neighborhoods – Washington Park. Despite being just 10 minutes from downtown (and 35 by public transit), Washington Park has trimmed lawns, fences, and tree-lined streets. Its centerpiece and namesake, Washington Park, boasts 165 acres of sprawling grass, lakes, waterways, and flower gardens. Originally developed in the 1890’s, the par remains a vital piece of Denver’s recreational offerings.

While Washington Park may be old, its scene is anything but stale. Families are moving in more and more, eager to live in such easy proximity to kayaking, walking paths, hiking trails, and the city. In fact, it has a walk score of 61 and a bike score of 80.

What’s Happening in Washington Park

After your morning run or kayak trip, make a beeline for Old South Gaylord Street. This area is packed with clothing boutiques, restaurants and bars, art studios, and cafes, giving it a true neighborhood vibe. 

With all the natural beauty around, it’s no surprise Washington Park residents are environmentally conscious and patronize independently-owned businesses. Greenwood Village

You might expect a town with “village” in its name to be a bit sleepy and slow, but Greenwood Village somehow has managed to become a vibrant community while preserving its historic and rural attributes. Greenwood Village is known as a safe and welcoming neighborhood – making it especially attractive for young families. And the area’s myriad outdoor activities and parks make it easy to meet the other families that have grown here. In fact, some of their parks are literally award-winning (Westlands Park and Silo Park), and the Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve has views of the majestic Rocky Mountains.

Rather than being a neighborhood of Denver, Centennial is its own town, and one with a notable emphasis on open spaces, native wildlife, and nature surrounding it. Centennial has many of the region’s most impressive hiking trail networks AND two of the top school districts in the state (Littletown Public Schools and Cherry Creek School District). With so much to offer, it’s no surprise Centennial regularly makes headlines as one of the best places to live in America.

What would a Colorado mini-city be without a few micro-breweries? Centennial has its fair share and more! Throw in several new local stores, unique independent restaurants, and a full calendar of activities and you’ve got a hoppin’ spot.

The Streets at SouthGlenn fulfills are your shopping needs, with sidewalk cafes, restaurants, and local and national retailers.

When you’re not brewery-hopping, check out Centennial’s coffee shops, like the teeny tiny, vegan-friendly Coffee Mountain Cafe. If you’re looking for something more substantial and craving Mexican, Los Dos Potrillos is a must-try.

If you need to work off that burrito and queso dip, run or bike along the Cherry Creek trail, a 42-mile long (yes, forty-two!) paved path that winds alongside its namesake waterway.

Once you’ve been there a while and have somehow explored all 42 of those miles, branch out to the rest of Cherry Creek State Park and Chatfield State Park, with endless views of the Rockies and bountiful options for fishing and camping.

Littleton is a little off the beaten path, which helps it maintain a friendly, neighborly vibe with historic character and local businesses. However, it’s just a 20 minute drive to downtown Denver, and 40 minutes by light rail, making it an easy commute.

As if that wasn’t enough, Littleton Public Schools are among the best in the state.

What’s Happening in Littleton

Littleton’s downtown may be historic, but it’s by no means dead. The local restaurants and shops (over 220, actually) are buzzing with activity, but if you ever do want to step back into the past, the Littleton Historical Museum will take you there. Plus, Hudson Garden keeps a packed calendar of cultural and science events and concerts.

As with any great Colorado town, Littleton keeps residents immersed in the great outdoors. With 1,400 acres of green space and 200 miles of trails, even the most fit of new residents will take a while to get through them all. Chatfield Reservoir provides swimming, paddle boarding, boating, and a beach for anyone who needs to cool off after all that exercise and Roxborough State Park serves up awe-inspiring views of red rock formations for those who prefer the scenic route. While we would always recommend the Mary Carter Greenway Trail for biking or jogging on a paved surface, you don’t have to take our word for it – more that a million people a year visit!

Coconut Grove has some of Miami’s best private schools including Carrollton and Ransom. There’s also the Coconut Grove Montessori School, Frances S. Tucker Elementary and George Washington Carver MIddle School.

Weston

Weston has been ranked in CNN Money’s “Best Places to Live in America” and in Family Circle’s “Ten Best Places for Families,” and there’s a good reason. Weston has 14 parks for families to explore, 46 miles of marked bike lanes for family bike rides, and plenty of shopping and dining.

Located along the edge of Florida’s Everglades National Park, this exclusive master-planned community was established as a city in 1996 and was developed by the same firm that developed Disney World. Needless to say, this neighborhood has one of the lowest crime rates in the Miami area. Downtown Miami is about 40 miles south of Weston. Depending on the time of day, traffic can increase your travel time to downtown from Weston.

Crime in Weston is 80% lower than the national average, and one of the safest places to live near Miami.

What’s Happening in Weston

Weston is a very family-minded community where everything seems to revolve around the family. For example, take Little Java’s Family Fun Center, a 12,00 square foot indoor playground with colorful inflatable houses, rock climbing, ropes courses, and an arcade.

Then there’s Sawgrass Recreation Park, where you can board an airboat and tour the Florida Everglades, where you can see birds, fish and alligators. You’ll also be able to visit the Exotic Wildlife Exhibit, where you can see leopards, panthers and other wild creatures.

Of course, there are plenty of things to do with adults in mind, such as Weston Town Center, the place to go for a wide range of shopping and dining options. There are also a number of golf courses and sports clubs, as well as the Bella Vita Mediterranean Spa, where you can relax after a long day of adventure.

Part of the Broward County Public School System, Weston has seven elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools, along with four private schools and two schools of higher and continuing education.

Best Neighborhoods for Families in Miami

Parkland

Located about 45 miles from downtown  Miami in Broward County, Parkland has 22 neighborhoods and was incorporated as a city in 1963. At seven square miles, the city of Parkland is mostly residential, with many homes situated on multiple acres of land with horse stalls in the back because of its equestrian-loving residents.

Though the city is quickly growing, it still maintains its small-town flavor. This city is known for its zoning laws, which are designed to maintain and protect the unique character of the city.

What’s Happening in Parkland

Tthere were no stores in Parkland until the early 2000s, but all of that changed with the Shoppes of Parkland, a small shopping center anchored by BJ’s Wholesale Club. But Parkland isn’t overrun by shopping or attractions, for that matter.

For family fun, there are places such as Monkey Joe’s in nearby Coral Springs, Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton and Coconut Cove Water Park, also in Boca Raton.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School serves almost all of Parkland, though there are small sections that are zoned from Coral Springs High School.Majory Stoneman Douglas High School suffered a tragic school shooting in 2018, and the community is still grappling with the trauma of that event. 

As far as high schools, there is also Pompano Beach High School. Westglades Middle School serves almost all of Parkland, but there are small sections that are zoned for Forest Glen Middle School in Coral Springs.

And Parkland has three public elementary schools and one private school, Mary Help of Christians School.

The average home price in Parkland is just over $1 million, while the average rental price is around $2,455.

Brickell

This urban neighborhood is located in the downtown area of Miami, directly south of the historic Central Business District. It is a great area to explore by bike or on foot and has a score of 94 for walkability and 83 for biking. Brickell is Miami’s and South Florida’s major financial district and one of the largest in the U.S. It was founded in the mid-19th century and grew to become Miami’s “Millionaire’s Row,” lined with lavish mansions.

Now, many of those mansions have been replaced by office towers, hotels, and apartments. Brickell is one of the city’s fastest-growing and most dense neighborhoods, with a total residential population of around 56,000 people. The crime rate in Brickell is 66% lower than the Florida average, and it is considered one of the safest neighborhoods in Miami.

There are quite a few schools in the Brickell neighborhood amidst all the new construction that abounds there, with new hotels, state-of-the-art shopping complexes and plenty of condos going up at great speed. What else makes Brickell family-friendly? All of the museums, play areas and entertainment options, which we’ll get to in the next section.

If you’re looking for some family fun, there’s the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, The Learning Nest, Sprout Kids Yoga, and Silly Monkeys Playhouse, among other attractions.

For a parents’ night out, Miami’s best rooftop bars, like Whisper Cocktail Lounge and Sugar, are close by. And the Brickell City Centre is a luxury mall with retailers such as The Apple Store, Saks Fifth Avenue and other famous swanky brands.

Pinecrest

A suburb of Miami with a population of around 19,000, Pinecrest was incorporated as a city in 1996 and is within the Miami-Dade metro area and about 18 miles from downtown. Covering about eight square miles of land, it’s recognized as one of the most beautiful residential areas in South Florida.

Labeled as a village, Pinecrest was first founded as a staging area during the construction of Overseas Highway, which connects the mainland to the Florida Keys. As Miami expanded in the 1960s, the area became more popular andfamous for its tennis, schools and relaxing way of life. There are a lot of young professionals that live in Pinecrest.

In Pinecrest, the main road is US1, which has grocery stores, strip malls and car dealerships. The neighborhood does offer a lot of restaurants, coffee shops, and parks. Family-friendly things to do in the area include Just 4 Fun, Evelyn Greer Park and All-Star Party World.

But also, many of the houses in Pinecrest were custom-built by the owners, so there are styles that don’t quite fit into a category. The current average price of homes in the area is around $2.4 million , and the average rent is around $2,119 per month.

A Little About Raising Families in Richmond

It’s cool. No big deal. Whatever…Richmond was named to Parents Magazine’s top ten cities for families in 2014. That’s good news for families who are moving to Richmond. This town is a river town, which means plenty of fun boating, kayaking, and other water-related recreational activities along the James River Park System. Richmond also has plenty of museums and kid-friendly attractions to keep families busy on the weekends and during the summer. And there are lots of walkable neighborhoods with neighborhood parks. But which ones are the best?

Bon Air

Bon Air is in Chesterfield County and was first developed in the late 1800s as a resort community for Richmond residents, a place to get away from it all. Now, Bon Air is a recognized historic district and is a popular area for families looking for their first homes. It’s got a small-town feel, where there are tree-lined streets and walkable neighborhoods. The crime rate is low there because of Bon Air residents’ commitments to the community. The joke in Richmond is that Bon Air is where punks go to retire – while it’s undeniably suburban, it’s also quirky and fun.

What’s Happening in Bon Air

Because Bon Air is close to Chesterfield and Richmond, residents can easily enjoy the amenities each of those cities have to offer. But there are plenty of locally-owned shops and restaurants in Bon Air as well, such as Joe’s Inn at Bon Air, Southbound, and The Treasury, a popular antique store.

Bon Air is part of Chesterfield County, which means it’s part of the Chesterfield County Public Schools system, which has a consistently high rating.

There are still many of the Victorian homes from the 19th and early 20th century. Homes in Bon Air tend to sell quickly. One of the reasons is because housing is so affordable, with the average home price just over $400,000.

The Fan District

You’ll become a fan of The Fan neighborhood (yeah, we’re pretty sure everyone has used that joke at some point). Filled with late 19th and early 20th century homes, The Fan has tree-lined streets perfect for kids to ride their bikes along, waving to neighbors sitting on their front porches. If you’re wondering about the name, it comes from the way the streets are shaped, which are laid out in a fan design. The Fan is west of downtown and has an eclectic mix of residents, from students attending nearby VCU to professionals and young families.

What’s Happening in The Fan

The Fan has around 80 restaurants and cafes, so finding a place to eat that’ll satisfy the whole family shouldn’t be a problem. And there are plenty of places for the kids to play including Paradise Park and Lombardy Park, both with playgrounds.

Families who reside in The Fan district have several school options. Because the area is within Richmond city limits, public schools are part of the Richmond Public School System. Public schools in the area are Fox Elementary, Albert Hill Middle, Binford Middle, and Thomas Jefferson High. There are also a number of private schools around including Benedictine High School, New Community, and Trinity Episcopal, just to name a few.

There are various architectural styles in The Fan District including Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Bungalow and American Foursquare. The Fan runs pricey, though – expect to pay around $700K for a house.

Church Hill North

In 2015, this historic neighborhood was the runner up in Richmond Magazine’s Best Family-Friendly Neighborhood list. Church Hill North began as a neighborhood of middle-class merchants and tradesmen at the beginning of the 20th century. As the years passed, the area saw many highs and lows. In the 1960s and ‘70s the city introduced urban renewal, demolishing many of the older homes in the area, including that of Shed Town, a neighboring community.

Residents of Church Hill began leaving, and in the 1980s, the Historic Richmond Foundation swept in and bought more than 30 historic properties there. Since then, more than 200 houses have been restored in Church Hill North, mostly by white and African-American first-time home buyers. The Church Hill North Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Once again, parts of this community are in transition, with older homes being rehabilitated and new construction going up, as well as new businesses like the East End Grocery Store and the J. Sergeant Culinary Institute.

What’s Happening in Church Hill North

There are a number of businesses around this area. Sub Rosa Bakery is a popular destination for bread, pastries, and coffee. Alewife and Grisette are both nationally-renowned restaurants with a loyal following in the neighborhood. Historic Libby Hill Park is a great place to gaze at the beautiful scenery and for a family walk. The neighborhood association offers residents family-friendly events throughout the year including a fall festival and an Irish festival. Also, there are four parks in the area for kids and two dog parks.

There are seven schools that serve the Church Hill North area including Bellevue Elementary School, Chimborazo Elementary and Central Montessori School of Virginia.

With a mix of historic and new homes, Church Hill North’s architectural styles range from brick and stone Colonial Revival to Greek Revival, with newly-built row homes and an increasing number of apartments. Prices range from $300,000 to $500,000 while rent ranges from a really affordable $900 to $1,400 per month.

The Museum District

With a mix of young professionals, long-time residents and families, the Museum District is an attractive alternative to The Fan, as it’s a bit cheaper in price but with similar historic home styles. Also, it’s close to tons of museums, duh! The Museum District is really walkable and on average, is about a five-minute walk from restaurants and shopping.

What’s Happening in The Museum District

So, about those museums. This neighborhood is close to the Science Museum of Virginia and the Children’s Museum of Richmond. There’s also the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, which offers around 100 art classes for kids.

There are so many schools within the area, with three elementary, three middle and five high schools. Some of them are John P. Cary Elementary, Lynnhaven Academy and Jefferson High School.

Like The Fan, this neighborhood has a lot of late 18th and early 19th century homes. But the prices are less expensive. See for yourself.

Bellevue

A very family-friendly neighborhood, Bellevue is in Richmond’s Northside. It boasts beautiful historic homes and tree-lined streets. Bellevue has a suburban feel but is only ten minutes from downtown. And it’s got a compact commercial district that has some terrific eateries and cute shops. It also has a strong neighborhood association.

What’s Happening in Bellevue

Bellevue is near two great parks. Bryan Park is a 262-acre park with hiking and biking trails. The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden hosts a number of popular events such as a New Year’s Eve Family Frolic. And during the holiday season, the garden is lit up aglow with lights galore. It also has a children’s garden where kids can dig in the dirt and climb into a treehouse.

There are three elementary and middle schools. One of the best schools is Linwood Holton Elementary School. The public schools in the area are part of Richmond Public Schools, though schools part of Henrico County Public Schools are close by.

What makes Portland a Great Place to Live?

With amazing restaurants, breweries, distilleries, coffee shops, events, music venues, art, and outdoor destinations, and a population of proudly self-declared eccentrics, Portland is one of the best and most interesting cities to live in.

One of Portland’s many advantages is its walkability. The city has a walk score of 84 out of 100, many daily errands and activities can be accomplished on foot, and that walking(and biking)  is a convenient and popular way to get around in the city. The city also has a robust public transportation system, including buses, light rail, and streetcars, which can provide easy access to different areas of the city.

The city’s greenspaces are amazing. Forest Park is one of the largest urban forests in the United States, covering over 5,000 acres of land on the northwest edge of Portland. It has miles of hiking and biking trails, and is home to a variety of plants and animals. Washington Park is located in the hills above downtown Portland and is home to many of the city’s top attractions, including the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japanese Garden, the International Rose Test Garden, and the Portland Children’s Museum.

And, while Portland is associated with rain, the city actually receives less precipitation than many other cities in the U.S., such as New York City, Boston, and Miami. The difference is that Portland has frequent drizzly days, while cities with higher rain totals tend to have more sunny days overall. The city receives an average of 36 inches of rain per year, with the wettest months being November through February. Despite its moist reputation, summer months can be sunny and dry.

Know your Portland Neighborhoods

When analyzing the neighborhoods of Portland, it’s easiest to split the city into four quadrants. These quadrants are divided by Interstate 5, Highway 26, and Interstate 84. And many locals refer to the Westside and Eastside of the city.

Westside holds most of the suburban or residential neighborhoods in Portland with more newly constructed homes and condos. This area of the city has some of the best schools, the residents are diverse and more affluent, and transportation to downtown is relatively easy.

The Eastside of Portland has become more densely populated, and development has started to overtake some of Eastside’s long-standing buildings and character-rich neighborhood hubs to make room for new construction and apartments.

This side of Portland holds some of the cities older neighborhoods. Many houses on the Eastside were built between 1910 and 1950, and the area is rich in character and charm. Eastside emits that quirky and delightful Portland local feel with small neighborhood shops, eclectic restaurants, and walkable streets.

A note about safety: Like any city, Portland has safe and not-so-safe neighborhoods. In general, violent crime rates are the same as in other large US cities. Property crime rates tend to spike higher here than elsewhere though. Incidences of bike theft and smash-and-grab vehicle robberies, for example, are comparatively high. A good home alarm system and commonsense precautions will help keep you and your belongings secure. The neighborhoods we highlight in this article are among Portland’s safest. 

Nob Hill

Nob Hill is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and stands out as authentically Portland. It’s packed with boutiques and locally owned restaurants and sits close to Forest Park’s 70 miles of nature-dense hiking trails. Residents of Nob Hill are commonly found walking or biking to their destinations – usually to Nob Hills great hubs like Pizza Schmizza or City Market NW or to the neighborhood’s plethora of salons, cafes, boutiques, and bars, making it our first choice on our guide to the best neighborhoods for families in Portland.

This district isn’t as expensive as the Pearl District yet, but there’s just as much to do. Besides Forest Park, Nob Hill is close to picturesque rose and Japanese gardens. For some of the best local eats, check out Besaw’s, which serves delicious home-style breakfasts and cocktails. The sunning, light-flooded brewery, Breakside, makes tasty and creative beer.

For sweets, pop into Papa Haydn and sample some late-night cake. Or taste the best bites of ice cream at the close-by Salt & Straw. On rainy days, grab a hot cup of tea at the Tea Chai Te lounge, and head over to one of Portland’s best-known indie-theaters, Cinema 21.

Heads up, parents: The neighborhood is served by the Portland Public Schools district, which ranks average when compared to other school districts in the United States. That said, there are some highly-ranked schools in this area, including Lincoln High School, Chapman Elementary School, and Metropolitan Learning Center.

Nob Hill has a number of Victorian style homes, restored Craftsman, and newer condos, apartments, and lofts. It’s a buyer’s market right now, median home prices have dropped significantly over the last year, with the average sales price now at $325K.

One of the tiptop places to live in Portland and located in the heart of downtown, Pearl District is chock-full of chic boutiques, galleries, and dining destinations. The neighborhood is close to Powell’s City of Books and the Art Institute of Portland, and locals hit the pavement during the monthly art walk, making it a happening spot on our guide to the best neighborhoods for families in Portland.

What’s Happening in the Pearl District

Pearl District is one of Portland’s most walkable areas. And its streets are clad with cobblestone and riverside docks. Previously an industrial area, Pearl District is now one of the most up and coming neighborhoods for young professionals and families. Community events, breweries, restaurants, and local shops all meet here.

Exhibits and galleries line the street like Bullseye Projects and Annie Meyer’s contemporary painting gallery. The area also features Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, Bridgeport Brewing Company, as well as Deschutes, Bridgeport, Rogue, and 10 Barrel. Alameda

Alameda proudly offers some of the best views of the city. From the top of its ridge, locals can scan downtown, the WIllament River and the Cascade Mountain Range. The neighborhood has a low crime rate, good schools, and friendly neighbors who are active in their community, making it an excellent choice for a neighborhood for families in Portland.

Alameda is only a few minutes away from downtown and is considered an arts district.

Atlanta lays claim to the ninth-largest metro area in the country, with about 6 million people living in the greater region. Though Suwanee isn’t as walkable as other suburbs around Atlanta, the area draws a crowd with its family-friendly activities, regular community events, welcoming feel, and green spaces. Butted up against the Chattahoochee River, locals enjoy a plethora of outdoor activities, including kayaking along 48 miles of river, mountain biking on hilly trails, or fishing for Rainbow and Brown Trout.

Some of Suwanee’s best attractions include the Suwanee Beer Festival – the largest beer festival in the state of Georgia. The Suwanee Greenway Trail offers some of the best scenic running spots in the city. This boardwalk-style trail passes through the wetlands and stretches over 6 miles. A Little About Raleigh and its Neighborhoods

Known as one corner of the research triangle, the city of Raleigh is in fact much more than a college rival and technology hub with the neighboring Durham and Chapel Hill. Raleigh’s high quality of life, strong job growth, and lower cost of living lure new residents to the area every day. Close to Duke and UNC, Raleigh brings in a high population of younger residents. The neighborhoods surrounding this intersection at Glenwood Avenue are charming and historic, developed around 1915. As you move further from the center of Five Points, this area of the city feels more and more suburban.

Five Points, as the name suggests, is the clustered center where several smaller neighborhoods converge. At this intersection, you’ll find a pocket of funky bars, quirky restaurants, local shops, and an indie movie theater. 

Most of Five Points’ streets are quiet and tree-lined. But they give direct access to busier downtown areas closeby. For a feel of local life in Five Points, check out some of the popular hubs like Hayes Barton Cafe, The Point Restaurant and Bar, and Ambassador Entertainment. At just 18 minutes from downtown Raleigh, Cary is an incredible spot for commuters or suburb-livers looking for a little more action on the weekend.

You won’t go hungry in Cary. The town has a wealth of great dining options like La Farm Bakery, Bosphorus, and Ashworth Drugs. Morrisville is known throughout the area for its wide range of cultural cuisines. It would be a wasted visit to Morrisville without a sampling of their diverse dishes. Try some of the area’s tastiest offerings at Hyderabad House and Neomonde Mediterranean. 

Morrisville also provides its residents with several excellent outdoor spaces. The 34-acre Crabtree Creek Nature Park is full of woods, wetlands, and walking trails. The 37-acre Cedar Fork District Park includes soccer, football, and frisbee golf fields. 

Apart from their East Meets West Festival, Morrisville hosts plenty of community events. The town is also home to the largest and tallest rock-climbing gym in the Southeast with a 55-foot climb. And the Park West Village provides residents with plenty of shopping opportunities.

The small-town charm of Apex, however, doesn’t make this little city a slow-moving one. Locals and visitors move through the area’s quaint specialty stores, the city’s art scene is thriving, and several of Apex’s restaurants have been nationally acknowledged and nominated for awards.

What’s Happening in Apex

If you ask the locals where to visit in Apex, you won’t talk long before The Rusty Bucket comes up in conversation. This local favorite sells one-of-a-kind furnishings and country-style home decor and fits right in with the small-town feel of Apex. 

Residents of Apex also enjoy visiting the Halle Cultural Arts Center which includes three galleries, studio classrooms, and a theater. Each first Friday of the month, locals and visitors hit the streets for the Apex Music Festival. During Christmas, Halloween, and the 4th of July, the city throws community-wide holiday parties. The annual Peak Fest draws crowds to the area each May. 

For local eats and drinks, you’ll find a wealth of options in Apex. We all love pizza, but not all of us have tried a pizza that’s won awards. Anna’s Pizzeria will change that, and their Stuffed Meat pie made with ham, pepperoni, ricotta, mozzarella, and sausage meatballs deserves an award all on its own, in our opinion. Other great spots to visit include Daniel’s Restaurant, Salem Street Pub, and The Provincial.

While Saint Louis is filled with wonderful neighborhoods and up-and-coming areas, we explored some of the factors most important to families and came up with this list of the best neighborhoods for families in Saint Louis:

Chesterfield

Based on location, school district, and affluence, Chesterfield is a top pick for families. This clean and safe suburb sits 30 minutes west of downtown Saint Louis. 

Chesterfield is known as the “City of Volunteers” because of its highly-involved locals. The largest city in west Saint Louis County, Chesterfield is a peaceful residential enclave that was formed in 1988. 

What’s Happening in Chesterfield

Filled with parks, playgrounds, walking trails, and even a carousel, Chesterfield is a picturesque place for residents of all ages. This peaceful suburb is home to numerous outdoor spaces and family-friendly amenities. Locals love Faust Park and its historic village, playground, walking trails, and Butterfly House.

Ladue

Residents gather at the beautiful Bogey Golf Club for social gatherings and golfing sessions. The Saint Louis Country Club sits in the center of Ladue, features fine dining, and prides itself on a rich history going back for generations.

Alexandria lives just 8 miles south of downtown D.C. with spectacular waterfront views of the Potomac River.

But where in this burgeoning city should you and your kiddos call home? Today, we’re diving in and exploring the most family-friendly neighborhoods in the city. Let’s take a closer look at 2 of the best neighborhoods for families in the lovely city of Alexandria.

North Ridge and Rosemont

Sitting west of Old Town and Del Ray, these two touching neighborhoods have some of the best offerings for locals. 

Named after Rosemont in Philadelphia, this neighborhood has its roots all the way back to the early 1900s, and most of this community is part of a historic district. Over 12,000 Alexandrians call this section of the city home, and these residents have a high median income of over $150K. 

What’s Happening in North Ridge & Rosemont

While the neighborhood has a suburban feel with roomy family homes and mature trees, North Ridge and Rosemont have a good list of shops, cafes, and restaurants. A local favorite is Grape + Bean, a great spot to get a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Since many amenities are located on Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray, locals of North Ridge and Rosemont can easily walk to all the happening spots. 

Locals in the southern section of Rosemont can also walk to the King Street Metro station and hitch a ride into Washington, D.C., or take an easy trip into the popular Old Town. On the northern side, residents can easily access the Braddock Road Metro Station to travel in and out of Alexandria.

This neighborhood is aptly famous for its meticulously preserved pre-Revolutionary War architecture. Old Town is one of the city’s hottest spots for visitors and tourists. What’s Happening in Old Town

Old Town’s streets are lined with renovated row houses, cozy coffee shops, fun bars, a plethora of boutiques, and local eateries. 

Places like Crooked Beat Records, Extra Perks cafe, and T.J. Stone’s pub give Old Town its unique character. Sample some of the best international dishes at Sunday in Saigon. 

The area also houses several large parks where locals and visitors can enjoy some sunshine, run along waterside trails, or spend the day boating along the Potomac River.
