Looking for a nice bungalow or single-family home in a charming neighborhood in California? If so, take a peek at Glassell Parks! This northeast L.A. neighborhood is surrounded by Eagle Rock, Glendale, Mount Washington, and Silver Lake–some of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods. 

Glassell Park started being developed in the 1900s and became considered part of L.A. in 1912, with the city of Los Angeles acquiring the rest of the neighborhood just four years later. From Glassell Park, you can get to the Glendale Freeway, which will make it easy to get to other parts of the city in a jiffy, whether you’re traveling for work or fun. 

This neighborhood has a median home value of $1.08 million in December 2023, up 5.6% since a year prior..  Average rent price is about $2,595.

There are quite a few excellent schools in Glassell Park, including Kedron Head Start & Pre-School, Glassell Park Elementary School, St. Bernard Catholic School, Luther Burbank Middle School, Irving STEAM Magnet School, Optimist High School, and Highland Park Continuation High School. 

As for things to do, Glassell Park offers you many options, from bars and restaurants—like Dunsmoo and Wife and the Somm— to spas, the Glassell Park Recreation Center, Glassell Pool, and much more. So, if you want an all-around great place to live in the City of Angels that caters to young professionals and families alike, Glassell Park is a good pick.

Faircrest Heights

While we’re talking about the best up-and-coming neighborhoods in L.A., Faircrest Heights is definitely on the list. A quiet but fun neighborhood, Faircrest Heights is located south of Pico Blvd and west of Fairfax Blvd. Fairfax is to the east, while Venice Blvd is to the south. 

Homes in Faircrest Heights have a Spanish-Mediterranean influence, with the majority being single-family homes. Most of the houses in the area went up somewhere between the ‘20s to ‘40s, so the houses have a unique style and architecture that showcases what was popular back then. (The median home price is currently $1,367,000 in December 2023, down 9.4% from last year, with the median rent at $3000, up from last year.) 

If you have kids, you might also be wondering about the schools and parks, and the good news is there are plenty nearby. For schools, there is Crescent Heights Blvd Elementary School, Canfield Avenue Elementary School, The City School, New Los Angeles Charter Middle School, Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES), and Fairfax High School. 

As for parks, there is the Westside Neighborhood Park, Playground Pavilion, Reynier Park, and Genesee Avenue Park. That means that if having a place for your little ones to play is important (especially if you have young kids), then Faircrest Heights could be a good fit for you.

Playa del Rey

Playa del Rey is one of our favorite places in Los Angeles. It was called Palisades del Rey when it first came to be back in 1921 and quickly became known for the beach, attracting many custom-home buyers and celebrities, such as Charles Bickford. 

Playa del Rey is right on the beach, located in Santa Monica Bay, just over 2 miles from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The median home value is $1,126,696 in December 2023, and the median rent in Playa del Rey is $4,200. 

If you’re deciding between Playa del Rey and Marina del Rey, which is another beach neighborhood nearby, one person on Reddit says, “I would say go with Playa. It’s probably going to be cheaper. It’s smaller, but more walkable and more casual because it’s right on the beach.

Overall, we would say that Playa del Rey is a great place for young professionals, but it does serve families well, too. For instance, there’s the beach, where you can swim, surf, lounge, and bicycle to your heart’s content. There’s also the Playa del Rey Center (a mall), where you can spend your weekends and buy something from one of the city’s popular boutiques, such as Lily Love Boutique. 

For schools, you have Paseo del Rey Elementary School, Playa del Rey Elementary School, Katherine Johnson STEM Academy, Marina Del Rey Middle School, WISH Academy High School, and St. Bernard High School–to name a few.

And of course, great restaurants adorn Playa del Ray: Over the Bridge Cafe, Amar Bakery, Deck 84 (with views of the drawbridge!), Elisabetta’s, and Dada, just to name a few. You can’t go wrong.

Culver City

One of the best neighborhoods for kids and young professionals in L.A. 

Culver City is a breathtaking city in L.A. that’s close to the downtown area, Beverly Hills, and Inglewood. This neighborhood offers a world-class food experience, with several tasty bars and restaurants serving cuisine from all over, from modern Europe, Mediterranean, and Italian to French. 

The city itself was plotted out in the year 1914 and quickly became recognized as a top location for filming. It was in Culver City that some of the world’s most famous movies were filmed, including The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Grease

So, you can see why so many Californians enjoy living in Culver City, especially if you work in entertainment, but you might be wondering how much it costs to get a place there. Here’s the answer: the median home value is $1.309,467 in December, 2023, and the median rent is $3,575, both up since the same time last year.. Even though the city is so famous, it’s still more affordable than other parts of California, making it worth it to move there as a young professional or with a family.

Monrovia

Situated at the bottom of the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California is Monrovia, a charming neighborhood that’s loved for its “small-town” feel, strong economy, and being the home for many technology and software companies (Parasoft Corporation, Tech Rockstars Inc., The Technology Depot, RBJ Software, Inc., etc.). 

According to the City of Monrovia, this neighborhood has a fascinating history. In the 1880s, a few people turned part of Mission San Gabriel into the quaint town we know today as Monrovia. 

Of Monrovia, Kathleen on Quora says, “If you like small towns, yet progressive, Monrovia is the place for you. It’s a great place to raise a family. There is a weekly farmers market and street fair. There’s also a quaint old town area with restaurants, a movie theater, pool hall/night club, library, and art studios. Monrovia has many parks and a hiking wildlife area up in the hills. It is a very diverse city of various ethnic groups. Overall, Monrovia is a nice little city.

What’s Happening in Villa Park

Federal Boulevard offers some of the best of the neighborhood’s shopping opportunities. And along with the upgrade comes exceptional ethnic food. The area is also dotted with lovely parks. Down the length of Villa Park is a green beltway and a lengthy frisbee golf course. From Villa Park’s green spaces, locals frequently enjoy the long city-wide bike trails that wind through their neighborhood.

Villa Park is ripe and ready to become the new popular spot. Its exceptionally inexpensive while sitting in a prime location, just west of downtown. Within the past few years, Villa Park has been redeveloped nicely with new stores, a movie theater, coffee shops, restaurants, and a new. And with the Denver RTD Light Rail running a few blocks away, commutes to and from Villa Park are as easy as sittin’ on your bum.

This little neighborhood is smack-dab between Denver, Aurora, and Centennial, and roughly 10 miles southeast of downtown. What’s Happening in Hampden

Hampden is home to over ten parks and sits directly next to the stunning Cherry Creek State Park. This vast green space, nearly twice the size of Hampden, features the Cherry Creek Reserve, which is shared by powerboats, sailboats, and paddle craft.

With houses selling like hot cakes, even when priced at $738,000, Lowry has gained the attention of locals wanting to settle down as well as property investors. The area is a popular spot for families – the nearby great schools are definitely a factor in this. Llocal perks like the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum and Lowry Sports Complex Park provide residents with plenty of fun and close-by activities.

What’s Happening in Lowry

This area was once an Air Base Center and has since been re-developed with new condos and single-family homes. Along with the redo came lots of shops and restaurants, like the fresh coastal inspired North Country. With the riverbank to one side and a hilly, scenic landscape to the other, Cincinnati has been noted for its picturesque geography. The area’s continental climate gives the city a wide spread of temperatures and weather throughout the year. With January’s low temperature average of 23 degrees and August’s high of 81 residents get a taste of all the seasons.Cincinnati offers a diverse blend of neighborhoods, from elite and established areas to up-and-coming millennial hubs. Currently, there are fifty-two neighborhoods, many of which were once villages that have been occupied by the city over time. Downtown

Of course, downtown has always been a popular spot. But with new bars, restaurants, shops, and housing popping up, living downtown has become even more popular and practical for young professionals and millennials in the city. Already in 2023 nearly 2,000 additional housing units are being planned. With over $1.7 billion dedicated to new developments in the downtown area, Cincinnati’s center seems to be on the up and up.

From sports to food to theater shows to art museums, Downtown has a wealth of entertainment options. One of our favorite spots is the Brewing Heritage Trail Tours. You’ll journey through one of the largest collections of pre-Prohibition brewery architecture, step back in history and into the stone-lined underground beer cellars.

The Cincinnati Art Museum offers a huge collection of over 67,000 pieces and is one of the oldest art museums in the country, founded in 1881. For shopping, you’ll soon learn about Fountain Square. This historical city square features shops, restaurants, bars, hotels, an ice-skating rink, and many historical gems dating back to the late 1800s. The area also hosts awesome activities and events that regularly pack out this city block.

For top eats and drinks, try to schedule in a few meals at these choice local hubs: fancy Boca featuring flavors from Italy and France, Crown Republic gastropub, the hip Igby’s multifloor lounge  serving craft cocktails and small plates, Maplewood’s West Coast-style cuisine, and Mita’s for tapas, Latin entrees, and cocktails

Walnut Hills

This pleasant residential neighborhood is one of the oldest hilltop neighborhoods in the city. Downtown and the University of Cincinnati is a 5 to 10 minute drive away. Despite its rich history and great location, for a time, Walnut Hills looked like it was fizzling out.

From 1960 to 2010, this neighborhood lost more than two-thirds of its population. But today, the resident leaders are working steadily to resurrect the neighborhood and have already made massive progress at transforming this once sleepy spot.

Unlike other urban gentrification projects that sweep away housing, culture and character, the leaders of Walnut Hills worked to preserve their community. They have succeeded with a thoughtful and deliberate rehab many will find appealing.

What’s Happening in Walnut Hills

Walnut Hills is extremely walkable and is home to the city’s best green space, Eden Park, which features some of the most beautiful views of the city. The neighborhood offers a plethora of shops, restaurants, and bars, like Le Bar au Boeuf featuring customizable burgers and a riverfront view patio, Gomez Salsa serving Mexican-family style cooking, and The Brew House offering burgers and meatloaf, craft brews and cocktails. 

Nearby the historical DeSales Corner district offers a mix of new and old shops with great local eateries like Solstice, featuring tacos and shareables inspired by dishes from tropical regions around the globe, Cafe Mochiko for simple Japanese nibbles, and Rusk Kitchen and Bar for casual American food on their 2nd floor patio under the stars.

Schools in this neighborhood include Walnut Hills High School and Frederick Douglass Elementary School among others.

Homes in East Walnut Hills

Walnut Hills offers a spread of housing options, from condos to row-houses to single-family homes to pricey mansions. Homes average $231,000, condos $248,000. Rentals are reasonably priced: ranging between $1,150 and $2,250.

Mount Adams

From its steep hills, the elegant Mount Adams overlooks downtown and the river. Amidst its winding streets and old-world charm, this neighborhood is home to a diverse crowd – from young professionals to longtime dwellers. The neighborhood offers a unique collection of local businesses, restaurants, and bars with beautiful Ohio River views.

What’s Happening in Mount Adams

Mount Adams draws frequent visitors with one of the city’s best views along the Celestial Street Overlook. Here, you can cross the historic Ida Street Viaduct to one of the city’s best parks, Eden Park. Throughout this green space, locals enjoy the scenic walking and running paths around Mirror Lake. For a sample of local history and art, visit the world-class Cincinnati Art Museum or the Krohn Conservatory floral gardens.

With its many restaurants and pubs along romantic, historic streets, Mount Adams offers a ton of spots that are perfect for a date night or evening with friends. For a taste of this fancy neighborhood’s high-end, visit Boca for outstanding French and Italian cuisine.

For drinks, check out Mt Adams Bar and Grill. This local landmark building was the first drinking establishment in Ohio to obtain a liquor license upon the repeal of Prohibition. Next door, the Blind Lemon is another wonderful spot to enjoy some fresh sippers in a garden patio or at the edge of a crackling bonfire.

Why this shift? A ton of work has been put into studying Cleveland’s past, addressing issues, and rebuilding its success from the ground up. City leaders are working hard to acknowledge Cleveland’s need for growth and take steps to improve race relations and curb bias in the city – an issue that has plagued the inner workings of Cleveland for too many years.

As these bruises heal, residents of Cleveland and people throughout the country are noticing once again all that the city has to offer. Super low cost of living, some of the best schools in the state, top-ranking hospital systems, cultural diversity, great eateries and bars, world-class art, sporting events, concerts, museums, and outdoor recreation with the beautiful Lake Erie at Clevelander’s fingertips. One of Detroit-Shoreway’s biggest draws is its many culinary attractions. The neighborhood offers countless coffee shops, bars, and restaurants. We suggest you visit pub-style Stone Mad (for Guinness-based drink concoctions) and Ninja City Kitchen & Bar for Asian.

The neighborhood also has a great art scene and some of our favorite outdoor spots in the city. Tour the Gordon Square Arts District or visit 78th Street Studios during their Third Friday events. Walking and biking around Detroit-Shoreway is a breeze, and Edgewater Park and Beach sit right at the edge of the neighborhood.

Clark-Fulton

Tucked between the better-known Ohio City and Tremont neighborhoods, Clark-Fulton is blocks away from tons of city amenities, including Ohio City’s West 25th Street retail district and West Side Market. But what makes this neighborhood special is its rich cultural diversity.

Clark-Fulton is home to Ohio’s densest Latino Population. This neighborhood is the city’s most diverse region, with a large population of African-Americans, Germans, Czechs, Italians, Slovaks, and Poles. And the area is going through some big renovations and changes. We’re catching Clark-Fulton right before it blooms.

What’s Happening in Clark-Fulton

While there’s still a lot of work to be done, local leaders are determined to preserve the culture and protect the people of Clark-Fulton as the area continues to develop and gain attention. Gentrification is not what Clark-Fulton leaders and residents are going for. Instead, they’re highlighting the people and cultures of the community and putting their efforts toward projects like La Villa Hispana, which they hope will become the economic and cultural center of the Hispanic community in Greater Cleveland.

Currently, they’re working towards creating a massive culturally-based public market called El Mercado. This commercial and residential investment is predicted to generate $29.4 million in annual labor income and support 500 jobs per year by 2024. La Villa Hispana is also incredibly unique since it’s largely funded and led by local organizations, businesses, and citizen groups.

A Little About Charlotte and its Neighborhoods

Charlotte is the full package. The city offers plenty of entertainment options for sports and racing fans (NFL, NBA, NASCAR – you name it) and outdoor destinations (mountains, nearby beaches, lakes, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center). It features charming residential areas and boasts of a booming financial sector and tech industry. And it’s home to several art museums and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, all the while hosting hopping city-wide parties and annual cultural festivals.

In Charlotte, you’ll easily find some of the best dining and drinking destinations in the country. One highly-renowned and can’t-miss spot in the city is chef Rocco Whalen’s Fahrenheit, which has been featured by several local and national magazines and newspapers. 

We love the beer in Charlotte too, especially what flows from one of our favorite watering holes, Wooden Robot (check out our list of the best beer in the city if you’re starting to get thirsty). Then, on top of it all, Charlotte dishes out its killer North Carolina Barbecue. And with bellies full, we submissively bow to the Queen City, thanking her majesty for her delicious gifts.

With all these perks, Charlotte has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S. But Charlotte still maintains a lower cost of living compared to the national average. Even while housing prices are billowing with plenty of new residents, Charlotte’s 199 neighborhoods offer plenty of diversity in affordability, culture, and amenities. Below, we’ll zoom in and take a closer look at five up-and-coming neighborhoods in this royal city. 

UPTOWN

Charlotte’s downtown is so up and coming, they call it Uptown. While tons of people do live here (typically in luxury condos and apartments), it’s largely full of high rises and skyscrapers typical of all big city centers. This central area of Charlotte is divided into four wards, all of which blend some of the city’s best arts, culture, history, sports, and entertainment. 

What’s Happening in Uptown

Charlotte’s Uptown packs in the restaurants, rooftop bars, and modern taprooms. Get a wide sampling of the area’s food and drink at the 7th Street Public Market. Visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame. For a taste of the city’s arts and culture, spend a day at the Harvey B. Grantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture, The Mint Museum, or The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.

For nightlife spots, check out The Imperial jazz and cocktail lounge, the EpiCentre for stand-up comedy and dancing or AvidXchange Music Factory for live shows.

PLAZA MIDWOOD

Located on the east side of Uptown, Plaza Midwood (or just “plaza” as it’s locally known) has seen some major changes in the past decade. Housing prices have risen drastically, and its wide, walkable roads have filled up with hip bars and new restaurants. 

Plaza emits a sort of grungy, local feel and draws lots of young professionals, some families, and several empty nesters who want a nice home, a small yard, and a driveway that’ll keep their Mini Coopers off the street. Located close to US-74 and I-277, Plaza is a top pick for locals needing to commute into the city center. 

What’s Happening in Plaza-Midwood

Plaza is home to several breweries – our favorite local spot is Resident Culture which shows off quirky murals in their taproom and creative can-art. For some great brunch, stop by Zada Janes. Midwood Smokehouse serves bbq worthy of a visit from former President Obama. The nearby Central Avenue is lined with antique shops and eccentric eateries. And Veterans Park offers close to 20 acres of green space for neighborhood get-togethers and family picnics.

NODA

Short for “North Davidson,” NoDa is the no-brainer pick for hipsters in the city. It continues to develop but has maintained an authentic, urban vibe – even more so than Plaza. The neighborhood has its own small downtown section with plenty of bars and small concert venues. And the area features taco shacks, tattoo parlors, breweries, and corner shops where you can find local artwork and CBD oil. So should you look for a hip apartment in this hot-spot? No-Duh.

What’s Happening in NoDa

NoDa will stack your weeknights and weekends with its great neighborhood entertainment spots, eateries, and drinkeries. Grab a fish taco at Cabo. Order a pint at one of our favorite Charlotte breweries – NoDa Brewing. Watch an indie punk band at The Evening Muse. Or explore this neighborhood’s unique shops along North Davidson and 36th streets. If you’re looking for some green space, North Charlotte Park is your best bet. It sits right in the center of the neighborhood and a 3-acre grassy lawn, basketball court, picnic area, playground, and walking trail.

Schools in the area include Eastover Elementary, First Ward Creative Arts Academy, Piedmont Open Middle School, and Garinger High among others.

Homes in NoDa

WEST SIDE

West Side encompasses some smaller neighborhoods like Biddleville, Smallwood, and Wesley Heights. But as a whole, this area of Charlotte is developing rapidly. These neighborhoods were once segregated and divided. But today, West Side has seen a recovery and has become a desirable place to live with arguably the highest ethnic and cultural diversity in the city. 

New and old residents live side-by-side. Long-term locals wave from the porches of their old shotgun homes to young professionals who have recently moved to the area. Neighbors gather for chili cook-offs and neighborhood picnics. And the Biddleville-Smallwood Community Organization continues to build unity between these once separated neighborhoods. 

What’s Happening in West Side

West Side is home to several bars and breweries, including Blue Blaze Brewery that features an outdoorsy-hiker kind of feel. Try their S’mores Blonde Ale, brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, and biscuit malt. Charlotte’s 37 mile-long greenway runs through the West Side, and the area is just minutes from Charlotte’s bustling Uptown. And the neighborhood is home to Johnson C Smith University, an HBCU that plays schools like Morehouse and Spelman.

BISHOP ARTS DISTRICT

Sitting ten minutes south of downtown, Bishop Arts District is full of trendy spots to eat, shop, and explore. There are performance venues, art galleries, nightlife hubs, community events, wine walks, and block parties all available to the lucky locals of this charming neighborhood. 

Several years ago, this neighborhood was pinpointed by the Wall Street Journal as one of the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in the country. And while it did see a big influx of new residents in these past years, Bishop Arts District is still growing as we speak. Despite all this growth, residents in this community are close-knit and the area maintains its small-town vibe. What’s Happening in Bishop Arts District

The few blocks of this small neighborhood packs in some of the hottest dining options in Dallas with high-end bistros, casual cafes, and cross-cultural cuisine. This little neighborhood is just a few blocks east of Downtown, and if you’re familiar with the spot, you’ll probably already know that it was originally named Deep Elm. But because of locals’ appealing Texan dialect, Deep Elm was pronounced “Deep Ellum,” and soon the name was changed.

Deep Ellum runs on creativity and culture. It’s home to Dallas’s iconic restaurants, bars, events, and outdoor art. Each year, the neighborhood explodes with activity during the 3-day Deep Ellum Arts Festival, featuring over 100 bands, art vendors, and great food. 

Check out this neighborhood’s performing art venues – Dallas Comedy House and the Undermain Theater. The area also features several live music venues like The Prophet Bar, Trees, and The Bomb Factory. Deep Ellum packs in the cafes, pubs, casual eateries, bars, and chef-driven bistros. Visit Cane Rosso, Twisted Root, Angry Dog, and Pecan Lodge for a start on the area’s best and most tasty offerings.

This area is full of a diverse range of residents who crave an exciting urban lifestyle, and locals enjoy the convenient public transportation, diverse cultural scene, and incredibly walkable grid of their home. Also, the McKinney Avenue Trolley transports residents around this neighborhood for free! Other locals tend to walk or bike to many of their destinations.

One of Dallas’s most walkable areas, Uptown is full of cafes, bars, boutiques, and restaurants that are just a few blocks away from many residential areas. One of this neighborhood’s and the city’s most famous restaurants is The Rustic. This charming spot has plenty of outdoor seating, homestyle cooking, and a tempting drink menu. 

Klyde Warren Park, a 5-acre oasis in the middle of the city, is a relatively new addition to the area and a popular outdoor destination. This park hosts year-round programs like fitness classes, dance lessons, lawn games, live music, and film screenings.

A Little About Raleigh and its Neighborhoods

Raleigh is the largest city in the Research Triangle (more commonly known as the Triangle), with the neighboring Durham and Chapel Hill. Raleigh’s high quality of life, strong job growth, and lower cost of living are luring new residents to the area every day. And the city’s many amazing restaurants, renowned breweries, and live music venues don’t discourage newcomers either.

Close to Duke and UNC, Raleigh brings in a high population of younger residents. The next generation has made the city grow in the entertainment sector—from major and minor league sports to monthly art walks, music festivals, foodie events, and rooftop and hidden bars. The city boasts over 1300 restaurants, has become a brewery destination, and features art and history museums, lots of green spaces, and a growing music scene.

Raleigh’s walkable downtown offers plenty of amenities. But outside the city, residents find several destinations that aren’t too far off. Durham is just a 30-minute drive from Raleigh. And on either side of the city, you’ll find mountains and beaches that make for incredible weekend getaways.

Within city limits, Raleigh splits between several regions (e.g., Midtown, East Raleigh, North Raleigh and Southeast Raleigh) that are divided by the major highways in the city (40, 440, 540, 70, and 401).  The Raleigh area includes 11 surrounding towns that each have its own vibe, culture, and activities. Below, we’ve narrowed down three towns that are growing quickly to accommodate the people moving to the area. Keep reading to learn more about these three up-and-coming towns near Oak City.

Garner

A quick five miles from downtown Raleigh, Garner offers a hometown feel just outside of the city. You may remember the name of this North Carolina town from its most famous native, American Idol winner Scott McCreery, who still resides in the area.

Many of the 30,000 people living in Garner commute to work in Raleigh or Research Triangle Park in Durham. They get the best of Raleigh’s bustling city life and the laid-back charm of this small town.

Garner is home to 12 parks covering 473 acres, making it a great place for people and families who like to spend time outside. Lake Benson Park offers something for everyone, including 1.8 miles of hiking trails, two playgrounds, and boat rentals for fishing from March to October.

What’s Happening in Garner

From history to arts to good food and drink, Garner has a little bit of everything. The Garner Performing Arts Center is the downtown cultural hub offering theater, comedy shows, and concerts. Learn about the history of the town at the Garner History of Museum at the Depot, which is located in the former train depot. You can’t miss the bright red caboose near the entrance. 

Downtown Garner has a new social district where patrons can enjoy alcoholic beverages in participating local businesses and restaurants. Stop by Aristotle Spirits, Garner’s first distillery, for creative cocktails using their own liquors.

A popular local spot for food and live music on weeknights is Lorraine’s Coffee House and Music. The best Southern-style breakfast in town can be found at Angie’s Restaurant. Grab some authentic Mexican food at Taqueria El Toro, which is just on the border of Garner and Raleigh.

The Wake County Public School System serves the Garner area, and it’s rated the second-best school district in the Raleigh area. Schools include Bryan Road Elementary, which is a highly rated public school for grades K-5, and Garner High School, which ranks as one of the top ten best magnet schools in the area.

Garner offers a mix of older ranch homes and newer construction with a median price of $410,000. Most people own their homes, but there are apartments and townhouses for rent for an average of $1,400 a month.


Holly Springs

People wanting to start a family often head to Holly Springs for its welcoming residents and family-oriented community. Over the years, it has been consistently ranked as one of the safest small towns in North Carolina. 

The town hosts family-friendly events year-round, from parades to fireworks to egg hunts. They have several green spaces and community parks, including Bass Lake Park, a recreational area with greenway trails along the 54-acre lake for bird-watching, boat rentals for fishing, and canoes.

What’s Happening in Holly Springs

The Downtown Village District is the place to go to for the Saturday morning farmers market and annual events or to shop locally at places like Bless Your Heart Boutique. Also nearby is the Holly Springs Cultural Center, which hosts events like its international food festival, community theater performances, and spring concerts. 

In the summer, the town is the home base for the Holly Springs Salamanders, an amateur baseball team that plays at Ting Stadium, their 1,800-seat sports complex.

Holly Springs has unique Southern-inspired restaurants like the Pimiento Tea Room, a quaint restaurant in a renovated historic home, or the Mason Jar Tavern, where you can get locally brewed beer and pub fare.

Residents of Holly Springs are also part of the Wake County Public School System. Public schools include Holly Springs Elementary, Holly Ridge Middle School, and Holly Springs High School, which are all highly-rated schools in the area.

Holly Springs is growing, so there are new subdivisions cropping up frequently. Houses have a median price of just under $600,000, with a few older homes going for around $450,000. Apartments and townhouses in Holly Springs rent for around $1,600 a month.

Holly Springs

Wendell is the smallest of the three towns on this list, with a population of less than 10,000, but it is growing. The town has been around since the 1850s, so it is full of historic architecture and is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The recent addition of Wendell Falls, a new community of homes, green spaces, shopping, and restaurants, will draw more people to the area. The retail and commercial space in the development includes a few chain restaurants like North Carolina’s own Bojangles, grocery stores, medical offices, and a preschool. Developers plan to bring in more local eateries and build additional schools.

What’s Happening in Wendell

The Wendell Historical Society offers a detailed map of historical buildings so you can check out the architecture and learn about the town’s history and origins. There is also a museum dedicated to sharing the rich history of Wendell.

The town’s most popular event each year is the Wendell Wonderland, a holiday display of 400,000 lights with other activities like trolley rides, a holiday market, and a guest appearance by Santa Claus.

There are plenty of local restaurants and cafes in Wendell, including Farmhouse Cafe, which uses local ingredients and sustainable practices. Downtown’s 41 North Coffee is a favorite for its handcrafted coffee beverages and cafe menu. Local brewery Bearded Bee Brewing Company uses local ingredients (like honey) for their micro-craft beer.

Also served by the highly-rated Wake County school district, schools in Wendell include the Wendell Magnet Elementary, which offers art and science education, Wendell Middle School and East Wake High School. A newer school, Cardinal Charter Academy at Wendell Falls, opened in the area for grades K-8.

A Little About Phoenix and its Neighborhoods

Phoenix draws new residents from across the country with its beautiful sunny weather, affordable housing, fantastic local grub, tasty craft brews, and outdoor activities that will lure anyone out of their slippers and into their Skechers.

But if you’re new to the area, you might not know where to start. Here’s a basic overview:

You might already know that Phoenix is Arizona’s capital and that it’s famous for its year-round warm and sunny climate and desert landscapes. The city acts as the central anchor of a sprawling, multicity metropolitan area aptly named the Valley of the Sun.

With over 1.6 million people, Phoenix is the fifth most populous city nationwide and the largest city in the state. And though it picks up on the arid climate passed on by the neighboring Sonoran Desert, Phoenix became popular as an agricultural community in 1867, dependent upon and thriving because of the area’s canal system. These irrigation canals were crafted by the Hohokam people, who lived in the area for over 2,000 years.

Other than the mountains in and around the city, Phoenix is generally flat, allowing the city’s main streets to run on a precise grid with wide, open-spaced roadways. The area is split generally between its south, central, and northern parts, with locals referring to these areas as simply “South Phoenix,” for example. Neighboring towns like Scottsdale and Mesa to the east and Glendale directly to the west of the city often get lumped into the area.

It is located just a mile from downtown Phoenix. What’s Happening in Roosevelt Row

RoRo’s biggest emphasis is on the arts (the neighborhood is technically considered an Artists’ District), and it puts special effort into supporting artists right from its backyard. Events like First Friday A.R.T.S. Market and Third Friday Art Walk feature these local artists in some of the nation’s largest, self-guided art walks. And numerous arts venues and galleries line RoRo’s mural-decked streets.

Sitting just off-center of downtown, this district offers all the tasty treats of center Phoenix’s restaurants, brewpubs and bars. Check out these amazing, close-by restaurants for a sample of the area’s finest: Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour, The Breadfruit & Rum Bar, and Taco Chelo.

And this little in between residential area is becoming more provoking by the moment, with shops, grocery stores, bars, restaurants, and outdoor activities a few steps from these houses’ doorsteps.

What’s Happening in Garfield

Phoenix has recently been gaining more attention from local entrepreneurs, and the city has opened numerous resources for startups, like many co-working spaces. One prominent business resource is just a few miles from Garfield – the small business job creation incubator, Center for Entrepreneurial Innovation.

Its excellent location makes Garfield easily walkable from downtown’s best restaurants and bars, and Roosevelt Row’s artsy events. But this little residential area has plenty of its own proud perks. Visit the local favorites, Welcome Diner, Gallo Blanco, Mariscos Playa Hermosa,, and  Angel’s Trumpet Ale House.

Tempe

One of the popular hubs right outside of Phoenix is Tempe. One of the popular hubs about 10 miles outside of Phoenix is Tempe. And if somehow this doesn’t satisfy your calendar, downtown Phoenix is just a short 10 miles away.

What’s Happening in Tempe

The striking Tempe Center for the Arts hosts regular concerts, dance and comedy shows. The close-by Tempe Town Lake is frequently visited by kayaks, pedal boats, and paddleboards. Hayden Butte is another outdoor marvel, with ancient rock art speckling the mountain. Residents and visitors gather for the Tempe Beach Park outdoor festivals. This popular suburb-city sits about 23 miles  southeast of downtown Phoenix. One reason for this growth spurt is that this area is in one of the fastest-growing innovation and technology centers in the country.  

What’s Happening in Chandler

Chandler offers a number of noteworthy parks, including Veterans Oasis Park, Tumbleweed Park, and Desert Breeze Park which features vintage train rides along the railroad. Of course, there are plenty of places to grab a delicious bite to eat in Chandler as well. Check out the unique Paletas Betty with handmade, Mexican-style popsicles. Other local eateries and bars include Pokitrition, SanTan Brewing Company, and Roy’s.

Each March, the Ostrich Festival lights up the town with carnival rides, concerts, craft booths, and the infamous ostrich races. Mesa

Mesa sits slightly east of Phoenix, about 19 miles from downtown. And more people are picking up on this. If you’re looking for a quieter space to raise a family or settle into a long-term home, Mesa should be on your list.

There are actually permanent residents of Sin City living happy lives–raising families even! A whole wealth of people have moved beyond the gaming and glamour and seen what’s behind Las Vegas’ dazzling front.

To give you an overview, let’s look at Las Vegas’ layout. The city sits right in the middle of the vast Vegas Valley desert. Most locals group Las Vegas neighborhoods into one of 12 regions. Within these regions, each of Las Vegas’ neighborhoods offers its own unique character. We’ve narrowed down the list to four Las Vegas neighborhoods that are on the up and up.

ARTS DISTRICT

As the name suggests, the Arts District is home to the local art community in Las Vegas. The area is bright and blingy with color, and full walls of painted murals blanket vacant buildings. Since it is just over a mile from  downtown, residents of the Art District can access any of Las Vegas’ big-city amenities. But the neighborhood itself is bursting with new businesses, breweries, and galleries. 

Despite all its growth, the Arts District still hasn’t reached its full height. The streets already offer a mix of coffee shops, vintage boutiques, antique stores, restaurants, museums, and studios. But more and more keep coming to the area. With residential areas blending into this cultural hub, the Arts District has become the happy home to many young professionals. 

What’s Happening in the Arts District

Las Vegas’ growing art scene is certainly anchored by the Arts District and its plethora of cultural and creative events, unique bars, and local eats. As mentioned, this area is brimming with art galleries and studios. Check out the Art Square, home to a dozen artists and their work, as well as a few theaters.

The Arts District is the still-vital cloister of galleries that is fast becoming more of a beer district by volume. Check out Able Baker Brewing,, Hop Nuts Brewing, CraftHaus Brewery, Three Sheets Craft Beer Bar, and the recently opened Nevada Brew Works. The list will soon be joined by HUDL Brewing Company, Silver Stamp, and Servehzah.

You shouldn’t be surprised to hear that this district hosts some awesome parties and events. One of the area’s most popular events is its First Friday Art Walk, which started over a decade ago. Today, this event has spread throughout downtown and hosts over 100 artists, live bands, food venues, and performing artists. The event draws about 30,000 people, and the neighborhood has started hosting “Preview Thursday” to manage the crowds.

SUMMERLIN

Summerlin is most popular among higher-income families and professionals who can afford this very beautiful corner of Las Vegas. Despite the price tag, Summerlin is rapidly growing and has recently had an influx of young residents.

Since Summerlin sits separate from the bustle of downtown, it provides a quiet getaway for its residents. The area is home to some of the best schools in the valley, and it’s considered one of the safest neighborhoods in Las Vegas. Commuting into the city for work or for a night on the town is still easy for Summerlin locals.

Though it’s only blocks away from the bright and new renovations of the city, Goose Hollow offers its own vibe, which tilts more toward historical and residential. A Little About Austin and its Neighborhoods

Tucked into the greater Texas Hill Country, Austin was first given the charming title ‘Waterloo.’ Soon after, this Texan capital was renamed to honor the ‘Father of Texas’ and first secretary of state, Stephen F. Austin.

But a lot has happened since 1839. At this point, if you don’t hop on Austin quick, it’ll ride away without you. Austin is now the fastest growing large city in the country. People are moving here to get a taste of the year-round warm weather, nature oases, incredible food, live music, and laid-back culture.

The city’s 100+ neighborhoods are divided up into general regions (ex: Southeast Austin, Central Austin, West Austin, etc.). What’s Happening in Cherrywood

Cherrywood is home to the Willowbrook Reach and Patterson Neighborhood Park, and it also neighbors the Mueller Lake Park and Southwest Greenway. Besides the exceptional options for eating and drinking just a few miles away from Cherrywood, the neighborhood itself has a few local treasures.

Check out the neighborhoods local gem, Cherrywood Coffeehouse. This charming coffee house hosts live music and yoga classes, has an outdoor patio, makes yummy meat-forward and vegan-and-vegetarian-friendly food, and… serves over 17 drafts of beer.

This urban village was built for getting outside. Once an old Austin airport until 1999, this area was transformed into a master-planned community with an emphasis on sustainability. At about three miles from downtown and two miles from The University of Texas, Mueller is perfectly located with a vibrant community and plenty of things to do. But, as Durham’s reputation as one of the best places to live in the U.S., the prices of homes are rising. Data from real estate sites shows that houses in the most desirable areas get multiple offers, are currently selling for about 7% above list price (15% for the most appealing properties in prime locations) and they are selling fast. It’s a seller’s market for sure. 

But fret not! Durham is still affordable, compared to other trendy cities, but for the best deals on housing – and, often, the most interesting places to live – you might want to have a look at Durham’s up and coming neighborhoods. You get the same access to the booming local economy, excellent health care and education, green spaces, restaurants, entertainment and community spirit as you would in more established neighborhoods, for less. Our Favorite Up and Coming Durham Neighborhoods

Cleveland-Holloway

Just east of beautiful downtown Durham is Cleveland-Holloway, an attractive neighborhood with real community spirit and easy walking access to downtown’s great restaurants and craft breweries. Seems like a new one opens every week – we love Mr. Fries Man for French fry-based, build-your-own creations, Bull City Burger and Brewery for their focus on local, the Durham Food Hall – ten local chefs serve up plenty of options, and way too many others to list. And you’re close to the Durham Bulls baseball team’s stadium (and Bull Durham Beer, a craft beer brewery located right inside the stadium). 

Cleveland-Holloway offers eclectic housing options. Looking for an ornate Victorian homes built in the late 19th century? A 1920’s bungalow, a mid-20th century family home, or something a bit more modern? You can find them all here. Realtor sites indicate costs ranging from $300,000s to $600,000s, for homes under 2,000 square feet. Larger homes are priced at $600,000s to $800,000. If you’re thinking “these are not exactly up and coming prices” we’d agree, but given the current market, and the easy access this neighborhood provides to downtown – it’s fair. You can find less expensive options in other neighborhoods, but you’d need to make some compromises on the amenities. 

You will not lack for things to do. Halloween in Cleveland-Holloway is big fun, and don’t miss Third Friday Durham art nights downtown. The downtown Farmer’s Market is a short stroll away, with the Durham Craft Market in Central Park, and Art Market Durham right next door on Saturdays.

Don’t dismiss downtown itself, either. It’s not “up and coming” – it’s already here. But if you’re a young professional who’s in search of an apartment, rather than a house, downtown Durham is almost certainly your happy place.

Lakewood

South of downtown Durham, Lakewood is close to downtown with its multitude of dining/drinking and entertainment options, but is also becoming a destination in its own right. 

Similar to Cleveland-Holloway, you’ll find a mix of homes here – older ones dating back to the 1920s right up to new homes built in the last few years. Prices range widely from $300,000s to $750,000s. The neighborhood is home to or close by places that have a real local feel.  Some of our favorites include Pine State Flowers, a flower shop devoted to showcasing North Carolina’s blooms, Rhythms Live Music Hall in the Reuse Arts District, Cocoa Cinnamon for churros and hot chocolate, True Flavors diner for comfort food with a gourmet twist, Debbie Lou’s for biscuit sandwiches and the Guglhupf bakery, café and beer garden for its breads, pastries and … beer!

Southpoint

Southpoint in South Durham is a modern suburb that’s perfect for families. Here you’ll find the Streets at Southpoint mall, the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area with camping, boating, swimming and beaches around the 14,000-acre reservoir. There are slews of upscale eatery options at the mall, of course, along with plenty of no frills delights like the old-school BBQ from Backyard BBQ Pit and the “Righteous Chicken Sandwiches” (and doughnuts!) at Rise. 

Median home prices are around $300,000 to $400,000, which is amazingly affordable for a safe neighborhood that’s close to well-ranked schools. You can also find apartments here, a rarity in Durham’s suburbs, that would be a good fit for couples or retirees.

Old West Durham 

Old West Durham is a suburb west of downtown, nestled between Duke University’s East and West Campuses, that  borders the Ninth Street Business District. You’ll find a “Diversity – Harmony – Community” – here, that motto is right on the Welcome to Old West Durham sign, and present in community life. 

Living here puts you close to downtown, but you’re also near Ninth Street, which is where some of Durham’s most interesting restaurants and shops are located. Many of the businesses are locally-owned, and it’s a lively place to run errands, explore, and meet your new neighbors. (As a side note, Durham’s only Whole Foods is located just off Ninth Street too).Among our favorites in the area are gastropubs BurgerBach and Local 22, poke bar ZenFish, Elmo’s diner (a fixture for over 20 years) and Monuts, a tip-free restaurant that serves handmade gourmet donuts, sandwiches on house-baked bagels, coffee and beer. (As a side note: Durham’s only Whole Foods is located just off Ninth Street.)

You can find some wonderful smaller homes here (1,200 or so square feet) and a few larger homes. Prices run from $400,000 to $750,000 for those most sizable options. If you’re looking for a house to rent, this is a good place to look – figure on paying of about 1,700 to 2,000 a month.

Also of note: Carrboro and Morrisville

Carrboro, just outside of Durham and near Chapel Hill, is a one-time mill town that now prides itself on being a progressive haven with a funky arts and cultural scene. It has been dubbed “Paris of the Piedmont.” The focus of the downtown area is Carr Mill Mall, a converted cotton mill, now home to a variety of  unique shops and restaurants. You’ll love living close to The Cat’s Cradle, the legendary local music venue, and the Carrboro Farmers Market which welcomes farmers and artisans from within a 50-mile radius of the town. Among the many arts and music festivals, the highlight probably is the Carrboro Music Festival, a free two-day event featuring over150 acts performing at dozens of locations in the downtown area. Median price for a home is $300,000, and there are rental houses available in the area as well, average rent is $1,700 but you can find good places for less (and way more!) 

Morrisville is  small, growing community in between Raleigh, Durham, and Cary – but it’s closer to Raleigh. That said, it’s part of the Research Triangle area, and it’s a great little town so we opted to include it here. Morrisville prides itself on its diversity, and its homegrown arts scene.  annual East Meets West Festival is a fun way to experience food, music, and culture from across the globe. In town, check out the offerings at the Hyderabad House and Neomonde Mediterranean restaurants. Median price for a home is $300,000. Lake Crabtree County Park, has hiking, single-track mountain biking, playgrounds, and you can rent a boat to cruise the 520-acre lake. Another oddly compelling activity – take the kids to RDU Observation Park and watch the planes take off and land. The little ones will love it, and you’ll probably be more amused than you’ll ever admit.

Trestle Glen

One of the overall best Oakland neighborhoods 

Developed back in the early 1900s, Trestle Glen is easily one of our favorite neighborhoods in Oakland, so you know we have to lead with this! Go east once you get to Lakeshore Avenue, and that’s where you’ll find the beauty that is Trestle Glen.

The homes alone are a sight to see, created in just about every style you can imagine, from Spanish to craftsman. Most people living in Trestle Glen are homeowners, and if you hope to add your name to that list, expect to pay a median home value of $1,207,816. (If renting is more your thing, the median rent is $1,916.) 

One thing we love about Trestle Glen is the proximity to Downtown Oakland. It only takes about 10 minutes to get there, so if you work in that part of the city, commuting will be a breeze. This neighborhood also has lower violent crime and property crime rates than other parts of Oakland, making it a safe place to live, raise a family, and put down roots. 

While we’re on the subject, if you have kids, you’ll be happy to know that there are many good schools in the area. These include Glenview Elementary School, Crocker Highlands Elementary School, Montera Middle School, Westlake Middle School, Oakland High School, and AIMS College Prep High School–to name a few. 

Also, for activities, Trestle Glen has many bars, restaurants, and parks to take advantage of in your off-time. Some of our personal favorite parks in the area are Mandana Plaza Park, Dimond Park, and Oak Glen Park. 

Adams Point

One of the top, most affordable neighborhoods in Oakland for young professionals and families

Adams Point is another great up-and-coming Oakland neighborhood, situated to the north of Lake Merritt and beside Grand Lake and Downtown. A few of the must-see spots to check out in Adams Point include the Children’s Fairyland, Splash Pad Park, Lakeside Park, and Veterans’ Memorial Building.

Approximately 85% of people rent in Adams Point, with the median rent costing $1,671. (The median home value is $523,021.) So, whether you intend to rent or buy a home in Adams Point (or a condo, which one Reddit user recommends), Adams Point might just be the place for you. 

One person who lives in Adams Point says, “This safe, family-friendly location is perfect! You are very close to the beautiful Lake Merritt. Grocery shopping is easy with stores like Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods a very short drive or a brisk walking distance away. Transportation is very convenient, with AC transit buses frequently running at early and late house; BART is also about 20 min walk away and 5 min by bus.

They go on to add how incredible this neighborhood is for growing families, especially those who enjoy weekends out and about at places like the farmer’s market. And even if you don’t have a family and are simply a young professional trying to find an economical, fun place to live, this Oakland neighborhood could be a great option for you, too. You can enjoy shopping, walking, socializing, hiking, and hanging out at the park all in a day’s time. 

For schools, Adams Point has Lakeview Elementary School, Lafayette Elementary School, West Oakland Middle School, Envision Academy Middle Grades, MetWest High School – Ericka Huggins Campus, and Oakland Technical High School.

Grand Lake 

One of the all-around best neighborhoods for families in Oakland

We’ve covered Trestle Glen and Adams Point, so we have to make room for their iconic neighbor, Grand Lake, too! Grand Lake is to the northeast of Lake Merritt, surrounded by Adams Point, Trestle Glen, and another one of our favorite neighborhoods, Piedmont. 

What’s it like in Grand Lake? Well, for starters, it has an urban but laid-back vibe to it, with some of Oakland’s best restaurants, parks, and boutiques. Grand Lake has the Grand Lake Theatre, Lakeside Park, and Grand Lake Farmers’ Market waiting for you if you ever decide to move there. 

Not to mention, the crime rate in Grand Lake is much lower than Oakland’s average crime rate, so you are sure to feel safe raising your kids there. (It also scores well for walkability, allowing you to easily go about your day without a car if you need to do so.)

Some of your options for schools to send your kids to include Grand Lake Montessori, Bella Vista Elementary School, EBMS, Roosevelt Middle School, McClymonds High School, and Oakland International High School.

Want to buy a home in Grand Lake? The median home value is $757,092. If you’d like to get to know the area first, renting might be more up your alley, and in that case, plan to pay a median rent of $1,926. 

West Oakland

One of the coolest neighborhoods in Oakland

As you might expect, West Oakland is the western part of Oakland (northwestern, to be exact). It’s surrounded by Downtown Oakland, Emeryville, and beautiful views right on the water. West Oakland is up against the Port of Oakland and part of the Oakland Bay Bridge, so if picturesque views of the water are something you look forward to, then West Oakland might just be the right fit. 

Whether you’re single or raising kids, West Oakland offers something for you. This neighborhood, which came to be back at the beginning of the 1800s, boasts stunning Victorian-style homes, funky bars and restaurants, and artwork from some of the city’s most renowned artists. 

In fact, one local artist mentions, “…So much art here. Many artists (and even many young professionals like me) just can’t afford the drastic rent in the city (or choose not to- what a waste!). First Fridays (Art Murmur) are a great display of all of the amazing things happening in Oakland. It is super culturally diverse and there are lots of great food options.

If you want to own a home in West Oakland, the median listing home price is $749,000. It’s $2,927 per month to rent an apartment there on average. One thing people love about living in West Oakland is the great nightlife and fast access to the BART public transportation system, which can take you throughout the Bay area. 

Do you have kids? West Oakland offers multiple schools, including Hoover Elementary School, Prescott School, West Oakland Middle School, Ralph J. Bunche Academy, Street Academy Alternative School, and Oakland High School.

Claremont

One of the best neighborhoods for students and kids

Looking for a neighborhood that’s near Oakland and Berkeley, with close access to the University of California, Berkeley? Consider Claremont. It’s less than 2 miles from the school when you take Claremont Avenue, making it easy to get there fast at multiple times of the day if you need to for school or work. 

Nearly 9 of 10 people who live in Claremont are homeowners, but rest assured that there are plenty of places to rent there, too. The median home value is $1,173,949, and the median rent is $2,878.

What is there to do around Claremont? You can go horseback riding or hike at the Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve, let your kids have fun at the Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt, put your headphones in and walk through Garber Park, or stop by the Oakland Zoo.

Japantown

One of the all-around best areas to live in San Jose 

Fun fact: there are only two other Japantowns in the U.S. that are like San Jose’s Japantown. Japantown (also called Nihonmachi) is an incredible, historical neighborhood to the north of Downtown, built over 100 years ago (the year 1900, to be exact). Now, it is a cultural hub, offering you premier shopping, art, entertainment, food, and more. 

For activities in Japantown, there’s the Japanese American Museum of San Jose and the Japanese Temple and Garden. Also, within a short 2-mile radius, you’ll find the Children’s Discovery Museum, The Tech Interactive, Symbology Escape Rooms, Hellyer Park Disc Golf Course, San Pedro Square Market, SAP Center, San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, California Theatre, and San Jose Museum of Art. 

Of course, if you’re moving to San Francisco with kids, you’re probably curious about the schools, too. Japantown has the San Jose Unified School District, Sunflowers Montessori Preschool, Grant Elementary School, Muwekma Ohlone Middle School, Sunrise Middle School, San Jose High School, and Notre Dame High School.

If you hope to get a house in Japantown, you’re looking at a median home price of $1,548,821. Otherwise, the median rent is $1,962. All in all, Japantown is a great place to live, and who knows? Maybe it will be your home soon, too. 

Los Gatos

One of the safest neighborhoods in San Jose

Los Gatos is in southwest Santa Clara County at the bottom of the Sierra Azules. The city is surrounded by San Jose, Campbell, and Saratoga, giving you peace of mind that all of your basic amenities and more are close by if you were to live there. (The city also has impressive safety ratings that are far below the national average!)

As one person on Reddit says, “[Los Gatos] has a “small town feel” in the midst of a happening place (Bay Area) that is hard to come by. It is gorgeous, the food is great (although definitely upscale), it is very intertwined with Silicon Valley, and it is an adorable town with TONS of character.

The neighborhood is known for great biking, hiking, walking, and wine-tasting. (Yep – you don’t need to host Wine Wednesday at your house anymore. Los Gatos has multiple wineries with delicious wines and great scenery.)

In case you’re thinking about moving in the direction of Los Gatos, the median home value is $1,694,000. The median rent is $2,341. Even though rent can get pricey, there are several major companies in Los Gatos to work for that can help with that. Some of the big players stationed there are Netflix, Roku, BaySport, and Plex. 

As for schools, Los Gatos has Blossom Hill Elementary, Louise Van Meter Elementary School, Challenger School – Middlefield, Raymond J. Fisher Middle School, Los Gatos High School, and Fusion Academy Los Gatos, in addition to several others. 

Rose Garden

One of the absolute best neighborhoods in San Jose for young professionals

Imagine trees up and down the streets, surrounded by classic and custom-designed homes. It’s not just picture-perfect living like what you see on TV. It’s Rose Garden, a delightful San Jose neighborhood that’s located in Central San Jose by Downtown.

In this beautiful neighborhood, which was built back in the 1800s, you get a little of everything. That includes gardens (check out the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden), museums (stop by the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum), parks, and tasty restaurants with cuisine from all over the globe. 

Homes cost a median of $1,096,698 in Rose Garden, with the median rent at $2,186. (Just slightly over half of the residents of Rose Garden are renters.) The neighborhood is considered highly diverse and a great place for young professionals to thrive due to the A-rated nightlife scene, many attractions, general diversity, and job prospects. 

Of course, while Rose Garden is recommended for young professionals, it is a great place to raise kids, too. Rose Garden’s schools include Trace Elementary School, Hester School, Monroe Middle School, West Valley Middle School, Abraham Lincoln High School, and Bellarmine College Preparatory–to name a few. 

Berryessa

One of the best neighborhoods in San Jose for families

Go north of San Jose in the middle of Milpitas and the Alum Rock District, and that’s where you’ll find Berryessa. Berryessa started as a rural agricultural town back in the late 1800s, famous for its fruit (especially prunes and apricot orchards). In the mid-late 1900s, many neighborhoods were added to Berryessa to go in place of the orchards, helping expand the beloved city that we know today. 

According to one resident, “[Berryessa] is a quiet suburban area next to relatively good schools and plenty of places to visit and escape to. The neighborhood I live in is more quiet than most but is close enough to more social environments when there is a need to relax and have fun. There is plenty of places to go to grab a bite, shop, or just kick back and relax. There is no place I would rather live.

In case you’re thinking about buying a home in Berryessa, the median home value is $891,199. Now, if you want to rent first and make sure you like the area, you’re looking at a median rent of $2,822. 

For schools, you have the Berryessa Union School District, Ruskin Elementary School, Majestic Way Elementary School, Morrill Middle School, Sierramont Middle School, Piedmont Hills High School, and Independence High School. So, if you move to Berryessa, you’ll have plenty of options for places to send your kids to, and you can trust that they’ll get a quality education. (The city even gets an A in the public education department.)

Silver Creek Valley

One of the top San Jose neighborhoods for kids

Silver Creek Valley is a charming neighborhood in San Jose that’s home to the beautiful Silver Creek Hills, which are between the cities of Silver Creek Valley, Edenvale, and Santa Teresa. At the eastern edge of Silver Creek Valley is the bottom of the Diablo Range, ensuring unforgettable scenery for those lucky enough to live there. 

In Silver Creek Valley and the surrounding neighborhoods, you’ll find a lot of Tuscan-inspired estate homes, as well as multi-story homes and condos. Most people in Silver Creek Valley are homeowners. You can get a home there for a median home value of $1,263,522. (The median rent is $2,806, in case you were wondering.) 

If you’re looking for a place to work in Silver Creek Valley, you’ll have many options to choose from. As with many other parts of San Jose, the neighborhood is close to various technology and computer companies (EmpInfo, Inc., IDX Corp, etc.), as well as other businesses, such as Execustaff Hr, Inc., Cognilytics, Inc., Restoration Specialists, and SUEZ – Water Technologies & Solutions. 

So, you know where to live and work in Silver Creek Valley. Now, how about schools for your kids? The good news is that Silver Creek Valley has quite a few, including but not limited to Scholars Academy, Silver Oak Elementary School, James Franklin Smith Elementary School, Chaboya Middle School, LeyVa Middle School, Silver Creek Academy, and ACCEL Middle College.

South of Market

One of the absolute best neighborhoods in San Francisco for young professionals

South of Market (aka SoMa) is a massive district that contains both Mission Bay and South Beach. The neighborhood is chock-full of warehouses, but don’t be fooled. There are plenty of incredible amenities, attractions, and more that make this neighborhood one of the best places to live in the San Francisco Bay area. 

According to the San Francisco Travel Association, the neighborhood was developed in 1847.
People began opening businesses in SoMa due to how close it is to shipping centers and realizing that having stores around would really benefit the people who lived there. 

Over the years, SoMa has turned into one of the best, most vibrant places to live in the Golden City, being home to popular attractions (the Museum of Modern Art, Pier 24 Photography Museum, Folsom Street Fair, SF Giants Baseball games, and Westfields San Francisco Centre–to name a few) and all the amenities you could want. 

If you’re looking for a suitable place to work in San Francisco, this neighborhood also has you covered, as many software companies have set up shop there. At the top of our head, we can think of Swrve, TekRevol, Onfleet HQ, Airtable, and Granular, Inc. 

And if you’re moving your family to SoMa, you have tons of schools to choose from, including the Chinese American International School, Bessie Carmichael Elementary School, Bessie Carmichael Middle School, Proof School, and Five Keys Charter School. Most people rent in SoMa, but if you choose to buy, the median home value is $970,578.

Golden Gate Heights

One of the best neighborhoods to buy in San Francisco

Hop in your car, and go toward Inner Sunset. In the middle of that neighborhood and Forest Hill, you’ll come across one of San Francisco’s best-kept secrets, Golden Gate Heights. This neighborhood is full of hills and curvy one-way streets, but it has some pretty scenery as well. After all, it encompasses two of the city’s most prominent hills, including Larsen Peak (Golden Gate Heights Park) and Grandview Park. 

Developed in 1927 with some of the earliest houses dating back to the ‘30s, it has come to be one of the best San Francisco neighborhoods to live in. The neighborhood is smaller than many (with a total population of 14,880), but there are lots of things to do there, such as checking out the 16th Avenue Tiled Stairs. 

If you plan to move there with your kids, here are some of the schools: the Maria Montessori School of the Golden Gate Co., Gates & Bridges Preschool, Jefferson Elementary School, Herbert Hoover Middle School, and Abraham Lincoln High School. 

You can get a home in Golden Gate Heights for a median value of $1,387,704, or if you want to start out by renting, you can expect to pay about $2,373, says Niche. Whichever option you choose, you’re sure to love it there. 

Parkside

Another on our list of up-and-coming neighborhoods in the Bay area is Parkside, a neighborhood in southwest San Francisco to the north of Pine Lake Park and Stern Grove. The neighborhood was mapped out way back in 1905, with the goal of putting in a new residential neighborhood between Golden Gate Heights all the way to 33rd Avenue, as well as between Sloat Boulevard and Quintara Street. 

The neighborhood started development just a few years later, in 1907, beginning with small, charming cottages and eventually transitioning to Mediterranean-style homes. (You can buy a home for a median value of $1,068,718 in Parkside or rent for just over $2,400 on average.)

One resident says, “Parkside is a great neighborhood to live in especially if you are a student or raising a family. It is a generally quiet neighborhood with good parking (big plus in SF). Its easily accessible to SFSU, Stonestown, and Daly City so you pretty much don’t need to leave the area often.

There are also many places to get a job in and near Parkside, including Simplifi, Spryscapes Construction Inc., and Vexadev. Attraction-wise, Parkside has the San Francisco Botanical Garden, PIER 39, Lands End Lookout, Hidden Garden Steps, Crissy Field, Golden Gate Bridge, and San Francisco Zoo close by. 

In terms of schools, you can send your kids to Stratford School, Commodore Sloat Elementary School, Dianne Feinstein Elementary School, Aptos Middle School, A.P. Giannini Middle School, Lowell High School, or San Francisco Waldorf High School. 

Mid-Market

Mid-Market (also called Central Market) includes Market Street and goes from Fifth Street to Van Ness Avenue. Unlike other parts of San Francisco, Mid-Market is not known for Victorian houses, hillsides, or cable car tours. 

However, it is a notable city for tech, being home to IFTTT, Symless, Zendesk, CoderPad, Finley Technologies, Inc., and numerous other companies. So, if you’re single and want to meet people and work in San Francisco, Mid-Market is a great place for that. (Current home prices are up to $1,895,000, according to one report, so finding a good job in tech should help with the big move!)

The neighborhood also has a long list of attractions, including the Warfield (great for concerts), The Unreal Garden (a museum and entertainment spot), and Brick & Mortar Music Hall. Also, if you like to shop, you’ll have a blast at the neighborhood’s many stores and boutiques. Afterward, you might even enjoy stopping for a bite to eat at a restaurant such as VILLON, Rue Lepic French Restaurant, La Bande, or The Melt. 

If you’re considering moving your family to Mid-Market, there are multiple parks, including the Mission Bay Kids’ Park, Tenderloin Children’s Playground, and Margaret S. Hayward Playground. What’s Happening in Aurora Highlands

This popular master-planned community has already sold out of its first release of houses. And the community designers snagged an awesome spot, situated where locals can connect to busy city life and peaceful Colorado nature. 

The community is just 6 miles from Aurora’s city center and 20 minutes from Denver’s Central Business District. Locals could spend the day in Boulder with just a 30-minute drive. This area was once an Air Base Center and has since been re-developed with new condos and single-family homes.
